(aka "Rosso Sangue" or "Antropophagus II" or "Monster Hunter" or "Horrible" )

directed by Joe D'Amato (as Peter Newton)
Italy 1981

Toss away those inferior bootlegs and experience sleaze maestro Joe D'Amato's infamous follow-up to ANTHROPOPHAGOUS like never before! Borrowing heavily from HALLOWEEN, D'Amato unleashes gut-spewing Greek boogeyman (screenwriter George Eastman) into suburban America for a "gruesome as hell" (CinemasFringes.com) and "incredibly sadistic" (ASlashAbove.com) saga of doomed nurses, butchered babysitters, bio-chemical clergy and some of the most insane splatter scenes in Italian gorehound history. Edmund Purdom (FRANKENSTEIN'S CASTLE OF FREAKS, PIECES) and Annie Belle (HOUSE ON THE EDGE OF THE PARK) co-star in this "violence-soaked bloodbath- (Hysteria Lives) and former 'Video Nasty' - also known as THE GRIM REAPER 2, ZOMBIE 6, HORRIBLE and MONSTER HUNTER - now featuring a 2k scan from the original negative and gushing with all-new Special Features.

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: (September 2018) Severin Region FREE - Blu-ray: Severin bring us Joe D'Amato's notorious gorefest, "featuring a 2k scan from the original negative " on a dual layered Blu-ray.  The film is available in 2 cuts here; the shorter, "Rosso Sangue" alternate Italian cut (with optional English subtitles) and the English DUB version in separate transfers (not seamlessly-branched). The image here looks good, regardless of which cut you are watching. The longer cut has a higher bitrate, looking slightly superior in-motion. The image is much darker, with better contrast levels, than the 2009 DVD. The colors are more muted, with bloods looking less red and ending up with a brownish hue. There is a healthy amount of grain. Overall, this is a fine 1080P appearance, as long as you don't mind the darker hue.

Depending on which version you choose, there is either a 24-bit 2.0 English or 24-bit 2.0 Italian DTS-HD Master Audio. The various drilling noises and squishy gore sounds come through sounding just fine, regardless of which version you are watching. The composer for the film is Carlo Maria Cordio (Body Puzzle,
Aenigma, Pieces, Amok Train). This is an appropriately cheesy soundtrack that is thankfully here as a bonus CD. There are optional English subtitles on the Italian version, and only CC subtitles on the English-language version. This is a Region-Free Blu-ray.

"The Return of the Grim Reaper" is a 31-minute interview with actor/ writer / co-Producer Luigi Montefiore (George Eastman). "D’Amato on Video" is a 20-minute archival interview with director Aristide Massaccesi. "A Biker (Uncredited)" is an 18-minute interview with Michele Soavi (another iconic Italian director). The film's trailer is also here. The first 2500 copies of this release also include a bonus CD soundtrack, which has value for fans of the film's music.

Severin have a fine package here, for fans of sleazemeister D'amato. The transfer is a welcome improvement over the previous SD transfer. Highly recommended to gorehounds.
