Directed by Albert Zugsmith
USA 1960
It’s like a Kinsey report on the campus! When sociology professor Steve “Mac” McInter (late-night legend Steve Allen) conducts a survey at Collins College about the mores and lifestyles of the younger generation, some of the town’s citizens are dismayed to learn that it includes questions about…sex! And when reporter Betty Duquesne (Jayne Meadows) receives an anonymous tip in protest of Steve’s “corrupt” study, an attraction grows between them while Mac ends up facing a lawful fight. Bringing together a curious cast including boxer Rocky Marciano, country star Conway Twitty, newspaperman Walter Winchell, character actor Elisha Cook Jr. and beloved bombshell Mamie Van Doren, College Confidential put sex on trial in the year 1960. No film ever dared touch this theme before! From Albert Zugsmith, producer of Touch of Evil and director of Sex Kittens Go to College, and featuring snappy musical numbers like “College Confidential Ball” and “Playmates.” *** College Confidential (1960), directed by Albert Zugsmith, is a B-movie drama that follows sociology professor Steve MacInter (Steve Allen) as he conducts a survey on the lifestyles and sexual mores of students at Collins College, stirring controversy among the town's conservative residents. When reporter Betty Ducayne (Jayne Meadows, Allen’s real-life wife) receives an anonymous tip accusing MacInter of corrupting youth, and a party at his home features a student film spliced with a supposedly "pornographic" clip, he’s arrested and put on trial for moral corruption. The film blends exploitation elements with social commentary, featuring a colorful cast including Mamie Van Doren as the sultry student Sally Blake and Conway Twitty as her crooning boyfriend, alongside cameos from Walter Winchell and Rocky Marciano. Though panned as “punk” by critics like The New York Times for its over-the-top plot and shallow characters, it’s a campy time capsule of 1960s moral panic and teenage rebellion, driven by a catchy soundtrack and Zugsmith’s signature sensationalism. |

On their
Blu-ray,
Kino use a DTS-HD Master dual-mono track (24-bit) in the
original English language. The audio of College Confidential is a
quintessential B-movie soundscape - lean, functional, and occasionally
punchy, driven more by necessity than artistry. Sound effects are
minimal, reflecting its budget constraints and the era’s pre-Dolby
simplicity. The film’s background score, credited to mucho-TV composer
Dean Elliott (with contributions from Randy Sparks), is a sparse, jazzy
affair typical of B-pictures aiming to evoke mood without breaking the
bank. The audio’s star is its pop soundtrack, featuring Conway Twitty -
“The College Confidential Ball,” “Trouble Up There,” -
whose songs are the standout, injecting a youthful jolt that aligns with
the film’s “confidential” tease - sex and scandal promised, if not fully
delivered. Sound quality is handled with ease by the lossless transfer -
cleanly and consistently. Kino offer optional English
subtitles on their Region 'A'-locked
Blu-ray.

Albert Zugsmith's College Confidential
follows sociology professor Steve “Mac” MacInter (Steve Allen), who
conducts a survey at Collins College probing students’ lifestyles and
sexual attitudes. It straddles the line between exploitation flick -
talk of sex, but no real skin - and social drama. While it lacks the
polish of A-list cinema, its blend of campy excess, cultural commentary,
and unintentional humor offers plenty to unpack. Plenty of notable faces
including Steve Allen,
Mamie Van Doren (the film’s visual centerpiece,) noir veteran
Elisha Cook Jr., Jayne Meadows, Mickey Shaughnessy, Cathy Crosby etc.
The performances range from earnest to exaggerated, reflecting the
film’s tonal inconsistency - part serious drama, part exploitation romp.
Zugsmith embraced low-budget exploitation, targeting drive-ins and
thrill-seekers. College Confidential
is a snapshot of a culture wrestling with sex and freedom. It will have
appeal for some and the Kino Blu-ray
