(aka "Le journal intime d'une nymphomane" or "Sinner" or "Sinner: The Secret Diary of a Nymphomaniac"

or "Diary of a Nymphomaniac" or "Diary of a Nympho")

Directed by Jesús Franco
France 1973

A film by legendary cult director Jesús “Jess” Franco (The Diabolical Dr. Z, The Blood of Fu Manchu, Venus in Furs, Count Dracula, Lorna… the Exorcist). Made at the height of Franco’s creative prowess, Sinner: The Secret Diary of a Nymphomaniac is a grindhouse Citizen Kane: a moody tale of one woman’s sexual evolution and shocking demise, told through the eyes of those who knew her. When Linda (Montserrat Prous) dies in the arms of her lover (Manuel Pereiro), the man’s wife (Jacqueline Laurent) investigates the dead woman’s past, to try and clear her husband’s name. As it weaves together the tangled threads of Linda’s tragic life, Sinner leads the viewer into a voyeuristic labyrinth of seedy discotheques, sultry jazz clubs, and delicious ’70s sex pads, backed with an acid rock soundtrack and oversaturated visuals that bring the film to the edge of psychedelia. Within its depths, Sinner reveals unexpected layers of narrative and emotional complexity, demonstrating why Franco remains one of the most under-appreciated filmmakers of European cinema.

A man named Ortiz (Manuel Pereiro) picks up pretty Linda (Montserrat Prous) in a lesbian strip club. Thinking she is a prostitute, Ortiz takes Linda to his room, where she has sex with him, then she calls the police and commits suicide while he sleeps. Ortiz is arrested for murder, but his wife Rosa (Jacqueline Laurent) starts to investigate Linda's past, beginning with the mysterious Countess Anna de Monterey (Anne Libert). Anna was Linda's lover, but the girl soon began a tragic spiral into drug abuse after an unpleasant affair. Rosa also discovers Linda's diary, detailing her relationship with a man (Howard Vernon) who changed her compulsion from drugs to nymphomania. Typical 1970s exploitation foolishness follows, with hardcore sex appearing in some versions of this much-edited film, available at 86, 76, and 75 minutes. Doris Thomas, Marisol Hernandez, and Luis Barboo co-star, with director Jesus Franco appearing as a police inspector. A similar story was told much better by Flavio Mogherini in La Ragazza dal Pigiama Giallo (1977).

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (December 2023): Kino Cult have transferred Jesús Franco's Sinner: The Secret Diary of a Nymphomaniac to Blu-ray. This is the fourth edition of Kino's new sub-label described as "Kino Cult is a deep dive into unapologetically weird genre cinema, blending recent arthouse discoveries with hundreds of outrageous midnight movies and grindhouse classics. These classics have been amazingly restored and have NEVER looked better!" The 1080P image quality has infrequent frame-specific damage (see sample below) and a few speckles. This 1080P has a few impressive close-ups and reasonably balanced colors, but is pale-ish and at the weaker end of the scale for the format's capabilities with softness inconsistencies - that may be a part of the original production. I liked the grain and I thought it was a decent HD presentation.

On their Blu-ray, Kino offer the option of DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel tracks (24-bit) in the original French or English DUB language choices. Sinner: The Secret Diary of a Nymphomaniac has assaults but the violence is mostly masked. The score broadly credited Vladimir Cosma (Diva, The Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe) and Jean-Bernard Raiteux (The Demons, Countess Perverse) sounding lounge-y at times but flows with the film's 'adult' sequences. The DUB is pretty weak, but acceptable enough so as not to bother changing to the original French. Kino offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offers a new commentary by Tim Lucas (The Video Watchdog Book.) He identifies the small-part performers - other Franco films they have been in, the score being a conglomerate of different library tracks - which he names, and states that most of it can be found on YouTube. Tim references similar exploitation films, and titles, of the 70s, and as far back as the 30s. He identifies some of Franco's style, long takes, attempts to replicate his hero Orson Welles and more. It's amazing that Tim is able to fill so much of the film with Franco-content that relates to Sinner: The Secret Diary of a Nymphomaniac. But he does and it is at his usual high standard. There are an hour's worth of three separate interview with actress Jacqueline Laurent (Rosa in Sinner), actress Anne Libert ('Countess Anna de Monterey' - Daughter of Dracula, The Erotic Rites of Frankenstein) and editor Gérard Kikoďne (Lorna… the Exorcist.) Lastly we get 1/2 hour of with Stephen Thrower, author of Nightmare USA: The Untold Story of the Exploitation Independents. There are no trailers nor liner notes. The package has an O-card slipcase.

Jesús Franco churned out films at a hysterical pace and Sinner: The Secret Diary of a Nymphomaniac probably sits somewhere in the middle, quality-wise. They are good things and 'slap-dash effort' features about the film. It has strong exploitation - nudity and sex acts that aren't always cohesive into the framework of the story. There are erotic and sleazy factors plus... tragedy. The extras are a big bonus from the Tim Lucas commentary, cast-crew interviews and Stephen Thrower video piece. This is a very good choice for Kino Cult's sub-label Blu-ray catalogue. For fans of the genre and Franco - it could be considered a must-own.
