(aka "L'ami de mon amie" or "Boyfriends and Girlfriends" or "My Girlfriend's Boyfriend")

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/direct-chair/rohmer.htm
France 1987

In Boyfriends and Girlfriends (aka My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend) Rohmer uses the amorous misadventures of two girlfriends in the Paris suburbs to test the old proverb “les amis de mes amis sont mes amis” (“the friends of my friends are my friends”) in the final episode of his “Comedies and Proverbs” series. Taking an identifiable stab at a yuppie(ish) set, Rohmer’s witty Shakespearean roundelay involves the buttoned-up Blanche (Emmanuelle Chaulet, in a superb debut) and the free-spirited Lea (Sophie Renoir), and their current amours. The pair are tempted by each other’s love interests, testing both their friendship and their understanding of matters of the heart.

***

Middle-class Parisian suburbs: Blanche and Léa, office worker and student, meet and become friends. Léa is going out with Fabien, but is thinking of leaving him. Blanche falls for Léa's handsome and witty friend Alexandre, but is tongue-tied whenever she meets him. Léa goes on holiday and Blanche, still smitten with the dashing Alexandre, begins to get to get know Fabien.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Metrograph Pictures Blu-ray (November 2023): Metrograph Pictures have transferred Éric Rohmer's Boyfriends and Girlfriends to Blu-ray. The Potemkine Films - Region 'B' - Blu-ray, compared with older DVDs HERE, from 2012 (in the Coffret Rohmer intégral combo blu ray + livret + pochette photos [Blu-ray] - it is 25 Rohmer films and 52 discs) looks quite pale beside the new Metrograph. I can't really speak to which is more correct but the Metrograph 1080P has beautiful rich colors - that seem authentic - with a tad amount of excess teal. The Region 'A' has some cropping on the 1.37:1 edges. The film was shot on 35mm and this does not have the green hue of Four Adventures of Reinette and Mirabelle and The Aviator's Wife Metrograph Blu-rays. Frankly this looks great.

NOTE: We have added 34 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, Metrograph Pictures use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (24-bit) in the original French language. Boyfriends and Girlfriends has no aggressive moments. The score is credited to Jean-Louis Valéro (Tale of Springtime, Four Adventures of Reinette and Mirabelle), sounding clean with consistent dialogue in the lossless transfer. Metrograph Pictures offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Metrograph Pictures Blu-ray offers a new commentary by, one of my favorites, film historian Adrian Martin. He quotes Rohmer and talks about the final installment of the Comedies & Proverbs cycle. He talks about the style of shooting of Boyfriends and Girlfriends, characters entering the frame and the vistas etc., how it has a touch of romantic comedy, destiny, fate of characters getting together, the narrative structure. I enjoyed his observations very much. There is also a 'Summer of Rohmer' trailer.

Éric Rohmer's Boyfriends and Girlfriends is the last of his Comedies & Proverbs cycle. The title, L'Ami de mon amie, literally translates as the (male) friend of my (female) friend, echoing the proverb "Les amis de mes amis sont mes amis" ("My friend's friend is my friend"). Emmanuelle Chaulet ('Blanche') has worked with Claire Denis and Alain Resnais. Sophie Renoir was 'Lea' (also in Rohmer's Le Beau Mariage) and is the great-granddaughter of the French Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir, daughter of the cinematographer Claude Renoir and grand-niece of film director Jean Renoir. Boyfriends and Girlfriends is more of Rohmer's reflective cinema and I consider the Metrograph Pictures Blu-ray the very best digital package of the film. It offers the essential Adrian Martin commentary and a magnificent transfer upgrade. Strongly recommended to Rohmer fans.
