(aka "Yang gui" or "Ghost Nursing")

Directed by Wilson Tong
Hong Kong 1985

Jackie is having bad luck with her life in Hong Kong so she travels to Thailand, believing that a change of scenery will do her well. Shortly after arriving, she learns from a mystic known as the "God of Gold" that if she agrees to “nurse” a ghost child, her fortunes will change for the better. Deciding that anything is worth trying, she sets up the required altar and begins to feed the ghost drops of her own blood. The protective young spirit helps turn her life around, but when she becomes distracted by a new boyfriend and forgets to feed the ghost, all hell breaks loose, leading the ghost to fight off an academic studying the occult and posses Jackie’s boyfriend, thus setting into effect an increasingly violent chain reaction.

In the grand tradition of Hong Kong black magic movies, director Wilson Tong’s GHOST NURSING gleefully indulges in all of the genre’s most beloved tropes: women in supernatural distress, rampaging ghosts, mystical black magic rituals, bodily possession, Taoist sorcerer monks, a botched exorcism and, of course, plentiful graphic and gruesome horror replete with squirming bugs, scalp mutilation, and gushing bodily fluids. Starring Norman Chu (36th Chamber of Shaolin), Shirley Yim (Dragon Lord), Melvin Wong (Righting Wrongs), and Billy Chan (The Big Boss), Vinegar Syndrome proudly presents a brand new restoration of this stylish and underseen piece of proto Category III on Blu-ray for the first time!

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Vinegar Syndrome Blu-ray (October 2023): Vinegar Syndrome have transferred Wilson Tong's Ghost Nursing (Yang gui) to Blu-ray. It is cited as being from a "Newly scanned & restored in 2K from its 35mm original camera negative". It is transferred in 1080P to a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate. The image quality is quite strong - clean and colors carry some density. I really couldn't find any flaws other than it can appear thick which is probably accurate to its roots.

On their Blu-ray, Vinegar Syndrome offer the option of two DTS-HD Master dual-mono tracks (24-bit) either in the original Cantonese or a Mandarin DUB. Ghost Nursing has aggressive effects moments and the bass gets some mild exercise. The film has a score credited to Chih-Hsiung Huang ('She' Is Bachelor?), sounding clean with reasonably consistent dialogue in the lossless transfer. Vinegar Syndrome offer optional English subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Vinegar Syndrome Blu-ray offers  an 18-minute video essay by Samm Deighan entitled "Ghosts and Black Magic in Hong Kong Cinema" where she talks about the Category III rating that Ghost Nursing preceded (it came into being in 1988) an she discusses how it evolved to a genre of more extreme Hong Kong films that share similarities of being 'graphic' with often-considered taboo subject matter - some evolving from ancient Chinese folklore. She sites examples - it is excellent. There is also an 8-minute interview with actor Billy Chan, who played the energetic sorcerer, entitled "From The Big Boss to Ghost Nursing". The package has reversible sleeve artwork.

Wilson Tong's Ghost Nursing is in the latter part of a trend to supernatural Hong Kong 70's and 80's films like Bewitched, Black Magic, Black Magic 2, The Bride From Hell, The Enchanting Ghost, The Ghost Lovers, HEX, The Seeding of a Ghost, Magic Cop etc. Ghost Nursing is actually quite dark starting with an unsavory 'exploitation of women' angle and, after a visit to a lively mystic, reverts to a demonic-possession horror. We think it may be targeting the low-level scum, whom we have already been introduced - in a revenge manner but it's not that discerning. There is quite a bit of less-effective gore involved that occupies the final third of the film. I prefer the more campy variety of this genre like The Oily Maniac. But there are some compelling story details here with Jackie moving from Hong Kong to Thailand only to become an abused escort (I was expecting a story with hospital nurses) and being subjected to a supernatural outcome. Yes, this gal doesn't have a lot of luck. The Vinegar Syndrome Blu-ray is at their very high standard - strong a/v and worthwhile extras. Those keen on this genre, may wish to check it out.
