Directed by Meng Hua Ho (as Horace Mengwa)

Hong Kong 1976

The sequel to the 1975 Hong Kong horror spectacular has finally arrived in HD!!! Long considered one of the greatest Asian fright films ever concocted, and released in 1976 to the sound of stomachs churning all across the Far East, most fans will be in agreement that BLACK MAGIC 2 (1976) is even more outlandish than its provocative plasma-packed predecessor! Starring the genius of Ti Lung (A BETTER TOMORROW) and directed by the legendary Meng Hua Ho (THE OILY MANIAC) this is one of the original Oriental zombie horrors as the undead begin to crawl out of their graves whilst perplexed 'experts' try and work out why they are being faced with corpses that can't be controlled! Meantime the macabre moments come thick and fast alongside several gross out set pieces that have to be seen to be believed! Originally released in American theatres under the title REVENGE OF THE ZOMBIE'S, where it proved a surprise grindhouse success, 88 Films is proud to present the powerfully creepy perfection of BLACK MAGIC 2 on UK Blu-ray!

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

88 Film's package offers a High Definition (1080P) presentation of the sequel to Black Magic (also on 88 Films Blu-ray - reviewed HERE). It has the 70's Shaw Bros. appeal - some graphic gore, outrageous make-up transformations, nudity plus a sexual component along with the supernatural-cum-magic elements. The Blu-ray image quality appears stable and brighter than the original film transfer. It is also in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio, some inherent softness and thick texture typically found in this era's Hong Kong output. It's on a single-layered disc with a supportive bitrate, no damage and seems like a solid replication of the film.

The audio transfer offers linear PCM - 24-bit - in the both and English DUB and original Mandarin. There are some standard, but unusually-placed, whiplash effects and another enthusiastic score by Yung-Yu Chen (The Mighty Peking Man, The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, The Five Deadly Venoms) that comes through with a modicum of depth and support for the tinny high end. 88 Films add optional English subtitles (NOT DUB-titles) on their Region 'B' Blu-ray-locked.

I appreciated the audio commentary by Ian Jane who is able to dig deep into the film production, performers, crew, Shaw brothers with plenty of interesting details that makes for a rewarding listening indulgence (and to see the film again!). Great job. The package also has a reversible sleeve featuring original Hong Kong poster art and liner notes by Dr. Calum Waddell.

The more you see of these nostalgic, occasionally cheesy, and kitschy Shaw Brothers horror efforts - the more you embrace them. This was great - plenty of, unapologetic, over-the-top, and transparent, gore effects, some cute Asian gals and a plot that is hard to take as seriously as the performers. Pure entertainment.  88 Film's Blu-ray package does a wonderful job presenting the film and adding the commentary which only augments appreciation. Fans of this appealing genre should consider this a must-own.
