Directed by Peter Hall
UK 1969

In this searing story of infidelity, Rod Steiger (In the Heat of the Night) and Claire Bloom (Charly) star as middle-aged couple Steve and Frances Howard of Middlesex, England. While away on business, Steve begins an affair with a 19-year-old hitchhiker (Judy Geeson, Brannigan). He thinks he’s in control of his philanderous situation—until the free-spirited teenager insists upon moving in with him and his wife. Dame Peggy Ashcroft (Secret Ceremony) also stars as Frances’ mother, whose neurotic interference only makes things messier. Directed by film and theater great Peter Hall (Perfect Friday, The Homecoming), this cult ’60s gem features brilliant performances and a powerful script by Edna O’Brien (Girl with Green Eyes) from Andrea Newman’s novel. This special edition also includes the television cut of the film in SD.

***

Steve Howard, a British sales executive living in Manchester, England, begins an affair with a young hitchhiker, Elle Patterson, to emotionally get away from his marriage to his wife Francis. But when Elle moves into a room in Steve and Francis's house, he must keep the true nature of his relationship with Elle under wraps at all costs.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (August 2023): Kino have transferred Peter Hall's Three Into Two Won't Go to Blu-ray. It is on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate and aside from some speckles the image looks very good - rich colors, grain texture and decent detail in close-ups. It's in the 1.78:1 and the frame-specific marks are visible but not intrusive. A positive HD presentation.

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a DTS-HD Master dual-mono track (24-bit) in the original English language. Three Into Two Won't Go has no real aggressive moments - some boisterous yelling near the end - but notable is the appealing score by prolific Francis Lai (And Hope to Die, Rider on the Rain, Love Story, The Body of My Enemy, Bilitis, A Man and a Woman) adding flavors to the narrative via the lossless transfer. Kino offer optional English (SDH) subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offers a new commentary by two of our favorites film historians Troy Howarth and Nathaniel Thompson. They discuss the score by Francis Lai, Rod Steiger - his baldness, major roles, his wife in the film Claire Bloom (they were also in The Illustrated Man together), 19-year old Judy Geeson (A Candle for the Devil, Fear in the Night, Goodbye Gemini,) her career, nudity etc. plus the English theatre, opera and film director Sir Peter Hall. It digs deep on the participants with interesting stories and details. I always enjoy their insights. Included, in SD, is a 1-hour 40-minute 1970 version of the film screened on NBC television in the U.S. although director Peter Hall, writers Andrea Newman and Edna O'Brien demanded their names be taken off the film, alleging 20 minutes of new footage had been shot and added. Lastly is a trailer.

Peter Hall's Three Into Two Won't Go is based on the Andrea Newman book (scripted by Edna O'Brien) and has themes of infidelity, abortion with carefree Ella Patterson (Judy Geeson) gaining a power advantage over a fractured childless couple. Steiger and his obvious toupee are a tough 'suspension of disbelief' to easily bed and impregnate Ella. There is a melodrama element and the real issue of the dissolution of a marriage must finally be dealt with. I was most keen on the performances and had never seen the film before so the Kino Blu-ray with commentary (and superfluous TV version) will appeal to fans of sexy Geeson and tamped-down Steiger. Claire Bloom is mostly stunning in Three Into Two Won't Go. Worth a spin.
