(aka "Una vela para el diablo" or "A Candle for the Devil" or "It Happened at Nightmare Inn"

or "Nightmare Inn" or "Nightmare Hotel" or "Dread Stop at Nightmare Inn")

Directed by Eugenio Martín
Spain 1973

Laura Barkley (Judy Geeson) travels to a sleepy Spanish town to visit her sister, who is staying at an inn run by two religious sisters. But when Laura arrives, she discovers that her sister has mysteriously disappeared. The two sisters, Marta and Veronica, tell Laura that her sister left suddenly, but no one saw her leave the village. Laura decides to stay at the inn whilst searching for her sister, but soon discovers that the self-righteous sisters cannot bear the nakedness and promiscuity of young English holiday-makers. One by one, these pleasure seekers begin to disappear. Meanwhile, the sisters evening meals begin to take on an unusual flavor... This deliciously deranged and atmospheric horror film, which was shot entirely on location in Spain, is finally available in the U.S., uncut for the very first time, from a brand new HD master.

***

Two sisters running a small hotel in Spain kill female tourists whose morals do not meet their strict religious standards.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Scorpion Releasing Blu-ray (August 2021): Scorpion Releasing transferred Eugenio Martín's A Candle for the Devil to Blu-ray. It is cited as being "uncut for the very first time, from a brand New HD master, re-color corrected for optimum picture quality". It's on a single-layered disc with supportive bitrate. It has had poor DVD transfers - both cut and of poor quality so this 1080P is very welcome by fans. There is also a Blu-ray by Screenbound in the UK, HERE (also appearing out-of-print), but we don't own it to compare. While imperfect in spots, this HD presentation provides this cult film with a decent viewing. It can be clunky/noisy in a few instances but generally colors have a richness, pleasing detail in the many close-ups and a generally satisfying video experience.

On their Blu-ray, Scorpion Releasing use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (24-bit) in the English language - frequently a DUB. A Candle for the Devil has plenty of violence that comes through with punctuating depth. The score is by Antonio Pérez Olea (The Blood Spattered Bride, The Dead, the Devil and the Flesh, Violent Blood Bath) adding some layers to the film's moods. Scorpion Releasing offer no subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Scorpion Releasing Blu-ray offers an interview with lovely Judy Geeson running over 18-minutes, a trailer and 'Play Nightmare Theatre Mode' nonsense.

Eugenio Martín's A Candle for the Devil ventures to some extreme Euro-cult cinema with shocking, gruesome, violence, an obvious take on religious hypocrisy and some stylish direction. It also has a cohesive allure - it is decent thriller cinema with copious amounts of nudity and bloody murder. Not surprisingly it is out of print. Martin (Horror Express) crafts together plenty of small but important details in advancing the story. It's a well-made horror and I am very happy to own the Scorpion Releasing Blu-ray. Fans of the genre may wish to seek it out.
