Tintin Double Feature [1X Blu-ray]

Tintin and the Mystery of the Golden Fleece (1961)

Tintin and the Blue Oranges (1964)

Welcome to the charming and colorful world of Tintin! Hergé’s classic comic book characters leap to the silver screen in two spirited adventures starring the intrepid boy-reporter and his faithful dog Snowy. In Tintin’s first-ever live-action adaptation, Tintin and the Mystery of the Golden Fleece, Captain Haddock sets sail to Istanbul, accompanied by our cow-licked hero and his cohorts. There they collect a strange bounty from the late Captain Paparanic: a rusty old ship called the Golden Fleece. But the real treasure lies in a chest under the sea, as they discover a map with an “X” on it—marking the spot of Paparanic’s gold. For his next escapade, Tintin and the Blue Oranges, Tintin tries to crack the riddle of an oddly hued citrus that can be grown in the desert—and possibly solve world hunger.

***

Tintin and the Mystery of the Golden Fleece
After the death of Captain Thémistocle Paparanic, Captain Haddock's old friend, he inherits a ship called the Golden Fleece. Once Tintin and the captain arrive in Istanbul, where the ship is anchored, they meet Mr. Karabine, a businessman who stubbornly insists on buying it even though it is in a dilapidated state.

Tintin and the Blue Oranges
Professor Calculus's friend develops a blue-skinned orange that can grow on any kind of land and survive harsh weather (in the manner of Lue Gim Gong) and therefore solve world hunger. The Professor and his friends, however, run afoul of gangsters who also covet the fruit. The adventure takes them from their home in Marlinspike Hall (Moulinsart), a fictional mansion that is presumably in Belgium, to Spain, where Calculus and another scientist are kidnapped.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (June 2023): Kino have transferred two French Tintin films to Blu-ray. The films are Tintin and the Mystery of the Golden Fleece from 1961 and Tintin and the Blue Oranges from 1964 are housed on one dual-layered Blu-ray disc. Both films start with the following text screen (in French): "The 2K scans, the image and sound restorations were carried out by the Mikros Image Laboratory." The image detail quality is modest although colors give a strong evocation of the comic. The HD presentation is clean and probably a decent reflection of the original production appearance.

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a DTS-HD Master dual-mono track (24-bit) in the original French language. The score on Tintin and the Mystery of the Golden Fleece was by André Popp and on Tintin and the Blue Oranges the score was by Antoine Duhamel (The Cop, Frank and Eva, Truffaut's Mississippi Mermaid, Godard's Weekend) - both supporting the films with the authentically flat lossless transfer. Kino offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

Kino offer no extras on this double feature Blu-ray.

These Tintin films were based on characters from the comic book series The Adventures of Tintin, written and drawn by the Belgian artist Hergé (Georges Prosper Remi.) They were extremely popular in more than 70 languages with sales of more than 200 million copies. I had totally forgotten about Spielberg's 2011 film The Adventures of Tintin which utilized computer-animation to create the action-adventure movie. Although both films had the Belgian actor Jean-Pierre Talbot as Tintin (he really does look like the character) - I thought Mystery of the Golden Fleece was more true to the boyhood adventurous spirit of the original comic books, at least, as I remembered them. The Blue Oranges had less-desirable slapstick humor and lacked the atmospheric escapade charisma. The bare-bones Kino Blu-ray has value for these vintage live-action adaptations. They are fun and it is highly interesting to see the character portrayals, costumes and plots. Fans who fondly remember Hergé's work will get the most benefit.
