(aka "Tsareubiytsa" or "The Assassin of the Tsar" or "Assassin of the Tsar" or "The Regicid")

	Directed by Karen Shakhnazarov
	Soviet Union / UK 1991
| From Karen Shakhnazarov, director of Zerograd, The Assassin of the Tsar is a mysterious and labyrinthine psychological drama in which the tormented chambers of a patient’s mind come to warp everything around him, even the folds of history itself. In one of his finest latter-day performances, the great Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange, Time After Time) stars as Timofeyev, a severe schizophrenic in a dreary Soviet mental hospital who is convinced that, impossibly, he’s the killer of two Tsars: Alexander II in 1881 and Nicholas II in 1918. The thoughtful new head of the hospital, Dr. Smirnov (Oleg Yankovskiy) is determined to cure Timofeyev of his madness – but instead finds himself literally pulled back through time, inhabiting the ghosts of the past as they march towards their tragic destiny. *** A new doctor from Moscow arrives at a provincial mental institution. His interest is the peculiarities of the psyche of a patient who believes that he is Yakov Yurovsky, the man who assassinated the last Russian tsar. In the course of their conversations it transpires that the patient is a kind of philosopher, not without a gift for suggestion. In a while the doctor himself falls under his patients influence: he tends to relive that fatal night of June 16-17, 1918 when, without any investigation or trial, Tsar Nicholas II, who had recently abdicated, was murdered, together with his wife, daughters and incurably ill heir. Soon the doctor realizes that the tragedy of the last Russian tsar is in part his own tragedy, too... |

		On their
		Blu-ray,
Deaf Crocodile use a DTS-HD Master dual-mono track (24-bit) in the
English (Dubbed over the Russian actors) and the other version in the
Russian language. The Assassin of the Tsar
has instances of strong violence that come through with effective depth.
The scores are by John Altman (Shooting
Stars) on the English version and Vladislav Shoot - "The Ship"(1988),
		"Revenge" (1989), "The Red Flute"(1990) - the
Russian-British composer of contemporary classical music, on the Russian
version. NOTE: Malcolm McDowell pretended to speak Russian in the
alt-version and was later dubbed. The Russian version may have slightly
scattered dialogue by comparison but overall both tracks are adept
in the lossless transfer. Deaf Crocodile offer optional English
subtitles for both versions, on their Region 'A'
		Blu-ray.

		The Deaf Crocodile
		Blu-ray

Karen Shakhnazarov's The Assassin of the
		Tsar
is a fascinating film with two separate characters whose bodies develop
psychosomatic wounds. Malcolm McDowell plays Timofyev - a patient in an
asylum who believes that he is responsible for murdering Tsar Alexander
II in 1881, and his grandson Tsar Nicholas II 37-years later. Russian
cinema fans will recognize Oleg Yankovskiy from Tarkovsky's

		Nostalghia and

Mirror. Deaf Crocodile are the 'real deal' and we should cover
more of their excellent catalog. I thoroughly enjoyed this Blu-ray
of such a unique, historical film with aspects of delusion, obsession,
philosophy, shared outcomes, political turmoil, and various perceptions
of truth. The package add further value with a fabulous commentary and
hours of interviews. Wow! Strongly recommended! |
