(aka "Sorrowful Jones")

Directed by Sidney Lanfield
USA 1949

Screen legends Bob Hope (The Paleface) and Lucille Ball (Fancy Pants) unite for the first time in this heartwarming story spun from Damon Runyon’s famous fable about a penny-pinching Broadway bookie called Sorrowful Jones (that’s Hope). Sorrowful takes a bet from a rotten gambler who leaves his young daughter as collateral. When the bettor doesn’t come back, Sorrowful Jones learns some hard lessons about parenthood—whether he wants to or not! On top of that, Lucy plays nightclub singer Gladys O’Neil, the apple of Sorrowful’s eye. But gangster Bruce Cabot (King Kong) stakes his claim on her affections and the sparks fly in all directions. A remake of the 1934 Shirley Temple film Little Miss Marker, this wonderful version from director Sidney Lanfield (Where There’s Life, The Lemon Drop Kid) marks Hope’s debut as a bonafide actor.

***

A young girl is left with the notoriously cheap Sorrowful Jones as a marker for a bet. When her father doesn't return, he learns that taking care of a child interferes with his free-wheeling lifestyle. Sorrowful must also evade crooked gangsters and indulge in a bit of horse-thieving.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (January 2023): Kino have transferred Sidney Lanfield's Sorrowful Jones to Blu-ray. It is cited as being from a "Brand New 2K Master". The 1080P transfer is on a single-layered disc with a supportive bitrate. It looked consistent on my system if not overly remarkable. Contrast is reasonably layered and there is some depth. The image quality is pleasing.

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a DTS-HD Master  dual-mono track (24-bit) in the original English language. Sorrowful Jones has no real aggressive moments. It has a score by Robert Emmett Dolan (Monsieur Beaucaire Murder He Says, The Major and the Minor, Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid, The Bells of St. Mary's, My Son John, The Three Faces of Eve) that bounces around to the film's moods. Havin' a Wonderful Wish (Time You Were Here) was performed by Lucille Ball (singing dubbed by Annette Warren - who also sang for her in Fancy Pants and later provided the singing voice for Ava Gardner in Show Boat.) and Rock-a-Bye Bangtail by Bob Hope and Mary Jane Saunders. All good. Kino offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offers only a 'Bob Hope Promo' reel and a handful of trailers but none for Sorrowful Jones.

Sorrowful Jones was cute and heartwarming - a Damon Runyon story carried effortlessly by Bob Hope and Lucille Ball - both revered as comedic icons. It is a remake of a 1934 Shirley Temple film, Little Miss Marker - coming to Blu-ray in March of this year. In 1980 another remake starred Walter Matthau, Julie Andrews and Tony Curtis. Sorrowful Jones was expertly realized - touching with amusing situations and a quiet evolving romance. I'm very glad to have seen in on this Kino Blu-ray - which is bare-bones but the price reflects that. Excellent, vintage, feel-good comedy to throw on at any time. Certainly recommended!
