Directed by Pierre Tsigaridis
USA 2021

With its super-saturated color palette, tenebrous art design and electrifying soundtrack, Two Witches presents two truly terrifying conjoined tales of witchery, paranoia and terror that hark back to the gory thrills of classic Euro horrors such as Suspiria, Shock and The Beyond.

Expectant young mother Sarah is convinced she has been given the evil eye from a mysterious blank-eyed old hag while she is dining with her bullish and insensitive partner Simon. When the couple go to visit his new-agey friends Dustin and Melissa, dark forces are unleashed after an ill-advised attempt at consulting a Ouija board to allay her fears. Meanwhile, tensions grow between grad school student Rachel and her new roommate Masha after a violent incident involving a man that the strange and impulsive young woman has brought home.

First-time feature director Pierre Tsigaridis, who also shot, edited and contributed to the film’s soundtrack, singles himself out as one to watch in a deft and unnerving depiction of unspeakable evil that truly delivers.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Arrow Blu-ray (October 2022): Arrow have transferred Pierre Tsigaridis' 2021 horror Two Witches to Blu-ray. It is on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate. There certainly are no issues with the HD image - it's gorgeous. The 1080P showcases many tight close-ups with impressive detail. Rich colors, contrast etc. are top shelf for the format. The 2.35:1 aspect ratio looks pretty sexy with plenty of depth and compelling camerawork. All good.

The audio quality is also exceptionally strong. On their Blu-ray, Arrow use a DTS-HD Master 5.1 surround track or a linear PCM stereo (both 24-bit) in the original English language. The surround has some intensity and sharp separations - quite effective. Two Witches has many jumpy moments and there is a occasionally unnerving piano-based score by Gioacchino Marincola (who has done mostly short and documentary work), sounding imposing and supportive via the lossless renderings. Arrow offer optional English (SDH) subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Arrow Blu-ray offers two new commentaries. The first is by director, cinematographer and editor Pierre Tsigaridis. The second has producer Maxime Rancon. So, quite a bit about the evolution of the project, production compromises etc. Arrow add a ton more supplements. There is a two-part behind-the-scenes featurette entitled "Behind the Movie" running about a dozen minutes in total. We get a 1/4 hour interview with actor and associate producer Dina Silva, another with actor Marina Parodi entitled "The Boogeywoman" plus a 10-minute piece with composer Gioacchino Marincola called "The Original Score" plus a second with Tsigaridis, The Piano Score, where he talks about the inspiration behind the piano score for Two Witches. There is some short "Test footage", a 1/2 hour Grimmfest 2021 Q&A with Tsigaridis and Rancon, one trailer and four teasers, an extensive image gallery, and a Behind-the-Scenes gallery accompanied by the film’s original score. The package has a reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Ilan Sheady and a 20-page liner notes booklet with an essay by Anton Bitel entitled The Changing Faces of Womanhood in Pierre Tsigaridis’ Two Witches. This is a stacked Blu-ray.

Pierre Tsigaridis' Two Witches has some positives and gore-hounds will delight at the extravagances. It certainly evokes some horror classics - not via an homage but more the decadent style - which here is in overload-mode including inventive, obtuse, camera angles. There is an abundance of contorted and scary female faces - which may be the base of the creepiness. It's quite a bold, modern, horror and I liked the concept - enjoying the first of the film's two stories that converge at the conclusion.... and eventually tease a sequel. Two Witches is briskly paced and I can see horror aficionados tucking into a viewing. The impressive a/v of the Arrow Blu-ray will augment the film experience. And those so inclined will have many extras, including two filmmaker commentaries, to wade through. This visual horror should suit an appreciative genre-loving crowd.
