(aka "The Vampire-Beast Craves Blood" or "The Vampire Beast" or "Blood Beast from Hell" or "The Deathshead Vampire")

Directed by Vernon Sewell
UK 1968

A classically told monster movie directed by Vernon Sewell (The Crimson Cult, Burke & Hare), The Blood Beast Terror is set in motion when mutilated bodies begin appearing in the English countryside, drained of blood. Horror icon Peter Cushing (The Flesh and the Fiends, House of the Long Shadows) stars as Detective Inspector Quennell, brought in to investigate the deaths. He consults entomology professor Mallinger (Robert Flemyng, The Horrible Dr. Hichcock), but the doctor seems to be hiding a dark secret about his fetching young daughter, Clare (Wanda Ventham, Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter). The deeper Quennell digs into their story, the bloodier the violence, until he discovers a terrifying truth about Mallinger’s experiments that is only revealed in the gruesome final reel. Hearkening back to the classics of Universal Pictures, The Blood Beast Terror offers terrific performances and special effects, and slowly builds to its skin-crawling climax.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (November 2022): Kino have transferred Vernon Sewell's The Blood Beast Terror to Blu-ray. It is cited as being from a "2012 2K Restoration". While I presume it is the same restoration of Kino's 2012 Redemption bare-bones Blu-ray (compared to the Odeon Entertainment - UK - Region 'B' Blu-ray HERE) this 2022 BD is a new transfer on a dual-layered disc with a higher bitrate (max'ed out), more robust audio, has optional English subtitles and a new commentary. This new 1080P is the marginally best of the three and we've compared a few captures below. It has richer colors (reds / greens) and is smoother in-motion. It's in the 1.66:1 aspect ratio and the HD presentation is quite pleasing with occasional depth, minor grain and a few speckles.

NOTE: We have added 58 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a DTS-HD Master dual-mono track (24-bit) in the original English language. The Blood Beast Terror has a few aggressive with attacks from the beast. The score is by Paul Ferris (Maroc 7, The Sorcerers, Revenge of the Blood Beast, Witchfinder General) sounding supportive clean with consistent dialogue in the lossless transfer. Kino offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offers a new commentary by novelist/critic Kim Newman (author of Classic Monsters Unleashed) and writer/editor Stephen Jones (author of The Mammoth Book of Folk Horror: Evil Lives On in the Land!). They discusses the various titles, the genesis of the film, production hurdles, cast and crew, added scenes (African prologue), similar films, the small budget, Tigon studio and much more. It's at their usual informative, observant level and I found it enjoyable. There is also a trailer for The Blood Beast Terror and six other Peter Cushing genre films. There is a reversible sleeve - see below.

Vernon Sewell's The Blood Beast Terror was made by Tigon British Films - Curse of the Crimson Altar (1968), Hannie Caulder (1971), Au Pair Girls (1972) - which had a relatively small output (producing films from 1967-73) with modest budgets but are best remembered for its horror films, directly competing for audiences with Hammer and Amicus. They eventually drifted into distributing, mostly, sexploitation films. I don't believe there is any connection to the earlier made Revenge of the Blood Beast (1966) with Barbara Steele or Night of the Blood Beast (1958) excepting the former has the same composer, Paul Ferris. I dunno - I liked it - Cushing (who hated it) raises the bar for the movie, it has entomology, a sexy creature gal aka "were-moth" and grisly murders. To each his own. The Kino Blu-ray is the best of all digital versions to-date and has the enthusiastic Newman / Jones commentary. Enjoy!
