(aka "La última señora Anderson" or "Death at the Deep End
of the Swimming Pool" or "The Fourth Mrs. Anderson")
Directed by Eugenio Martín
Spain /
Italy 1971
In this rarely-seen but always-surprising giallo - made between A QUIET PLACE TO KILL and KNIFE OF ICE - Golden Globe winning/Academy Award nominated Hollywood exile Carroll Baker (BABY DOLL, SOMETHING WILD) stars as the new bride of a wealthy British playboy (Oscar nominee Michael Craig of THE ANGRY SILENCE and MYSTERIOUS ISLAND) whose three previous wives met with suspiciously accidental deaths. Marina Malfatti (ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK) co-stars in this 1971 Italian/Spanish co-production directed by Eugenio Martín (HORROR EXPRESS) and co-written by Santiago Moncada (HATCHET FOR THE HONEYMOON) with a score by Piero Umiliani (FIVE DOLLS FOR AN AUGUST MOON) - also known as DEATH AT THE DEEP END OF THE SWIMMING POOL and THE LAST MRS. ANDERSON. *** A wealthy Englishman finds his third wife dead. After the police discover that his first two wives had also died suddenly, an investigation is launched. Meanwhile, a new neighbour moves in and she seems to become very interested in Arthur. |

On their
Blu-ray,
Severin use DTS-HD Master dual-mono tracks (24-bit) in both English and
Italian options. It sounds strong in exporting the film's limited
effects (no gunfire) although I only watched completely in the English
track. The Fourth Victim
has very few aggressive moments with a supportive, and occasionally
dramatic, score by
Piero Umiliani (Roy
Colt and Winchester Jack,
Baba
Yaga, Bava's
Five Dolls for an August Moon.) accentuating the suspense and
mystery elements via the lossless transfer. Dialogue sync is imperfect
but consistently audible. Severin offer optional English (SDH)
subtitles on their Region 'A'
Blu-ray.
The Severin
Blu-ray
Eugenio Martín's The Fourth Victim
is another of Carroll Baker's Italian 70's thrillers flirting in the
Giallo discussion with many desirable genre conventions. It is
rarely seen and not part of the conversation with murder in the offing
but minimal Baker cheesecake or graphic content. It has desirable
inventive camera usage (peeking through stair railings, writing on
windows, sunglass reflections etc.) higher on mystery than psychological
nail-biting. I enjoyed it being big on sexy Carroll Baker and pleased to
see studly, dashing, Michael Craig of less-recognizable
Mysterious Island fame. Euro-genre and Baker completists fans
will want to indulge in the Severin Blu-ray |
