(aka "Diamante Lobo" or "A Bullet From God")

Directed by Gianfranco Parolini (as Frank Kramer)
Italy / Israel 1976

Vengeance is mine, saith the Lord. Screen legends Lee Van Cleef (For a Few Dollars More), Jack Palance (Chato’s Land) and Richard Boone (Hombre) star in this tough-as-nails Italian-Israeli spaghetti western from director Gianfranco Parolini (Sabata, Adiós, Sabata, Return of Sabata). A man of the cloth (Van Cleef) is brutally murdered while trying to defend his dusty town from a ruthless band of outlaws led by the nasty Sam Clayton (Palance). The bandits, however, did not count on the priest’s gunslinging twin brother (also Van Cleef) to seek bloody revenge. Produced by the legendary Golan-Globus team (Enter the Ninja, Runaway Train), scored by Sante Maria Romitelli (Hatchet for the Honeymoon) and co-starring Sybil Danning (They’re Playing with Fire) and Leif Garrett (Devil Times Five), God’s Gun is an unholy western shoot-’em-up like no other!

***

Priest turned vigilante Father John (Van Cleef) hunts down a gang of criminals, led by Sam Clayton (Palance), who killed a man in a local bar. On the gang's return to the town, they kill the priest, leaving a young parishioner Johnny behind. He now seeks revenge for the death of the holy man.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (February 2022): Kino have transferred Gianfranco Parolini's God's Gun to Blu-ray. It is cited as being from a "Brand New 2K Master". The first 10-minutes are quite soft but the image improves after that and is quite acceptable with an ever-present film-like texture. Colors have some richness and the 1080P is housed on a dual0-layered disc with a maxed out transfer bitrate. It probably looks like its theatrical roots - heavy and reasonably clean with only the opening as weakly distracting.

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (24-bit) in the English language (often as a DUB.) God's Gun has a girth of aggressive sounds with plenty of gunplay. It comes through with impactful depth and there is a genre-reminscient score by Sante Maria Romitelli's (Cry of a Prostitute, Hatchet for the Honeymoon) that has sequences that sounds very Morricone-like ("Wah, wah wha wah".) It sounds supportive via the lossless transfer. Kino offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offers a new commentary by Alex Cox  (author of the indispensable '10,000 Ways to Die: A Director's Take on the Spaghetti Western'.) He discusses the rotating camera technique, how it is strange to see Jack Palance overact, the sexual politics of 70's cinema, how Van Cleef and Palance are essentially existing on past performances here, he talks about the career of the director Gianfranco Parolini also known as Frank Kramer (If You Meet Sartana... Pray for Your Death) and plenty on Van Cleef, Palance, teen-heartthrob Leif Garrett and B-movie icon Sybil Danning (still working today!), composer Sante Maria Romitelli's penultimate score, circus westerns, and much more. There are plenty of gaps where he lets the film run. There is a trailer for God's Gun and other trailers plus the package has reversible cover art work (see below.)

Gianfranco Parolini's God's Gun is weak but curious and fun for fans of 70's Italian 'pasta' westerns. It has one-dimensional characterizations from Lee Van Cleef, Jack Palance, Leif Garrett and Sybil Danning. It is another cheapie Golan-Globus film (Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus) but not as overly-ambitious as the production team would signature. Richard Boone isn't in the film much and actually walked out on the production before it was completed leaving his role to be dubbed by another actor. In an interview in Israel in May 1976, Boone stated: "I'm starring in the worst picture ever made. The producer is an Israeli and the director is Italian, and they don't speak. Fortunately it doesn't matter, because the director is deaf in both ears." On the positive, the revenge plot is kinda cool and I'll watch any westerns starring Van Cleef. His priest role is refreshing and dual-brother character is pleasing to see. The Kino Blu-ray adds value with the Alex Cox commentary and a wayward if unusually appealing Spaghetti western.
