(aka "Parallel Mothers")

Directed by Pedro Almodóvar
Spain / France 2021

Two women, Janis (Penélope Cruz) and Ana (Milena Smit), coincide in a hospital room where they are going to give birth. Both are single and became pregnant by accident. Janis, middle-aged, doesn’t regret it and she is exultant. The other, Ana, an adolescent, is scared, repentant and traumatized. Janis tries to encourage her while they move like sleepwalkers along the hospital corridors. The few words they exchange in these hours will create a very close link between the two, which by chance develops and complicates, and changes their lives in a decisive way.

***

Two unmarried women who have become pregnant by accident and are about to give birth meet in a hospital room: Janis, middle-aged, unrepentant and happy; Ana, a teenager, remorseful and frightened.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Sony Blu-ray (April 2022): Sony have transferred Pedro Almodóvar's Parallel Mothers to Blu-ray. Being an Almodóvar film, it is gorgeous. Primary colors are vibrant (reds and yellows) and detail impressive shot in HD. It's a crystal-clear modern film on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate. The 1080P image quality is very impressive.

NOTE: We have added 34 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, Sony use a DTS-HD Master 5.1 surround track (16-bit) in the original Spanish language. Parallel Mothers has no aggressive moments and only a few notable instances of separation but there is a effectively dramatic score by Alberto Iglesias (Julieta, All About My Mother, Sex and Lucia, Tinker, Tailor Soldier, Spy, Broken Embraces, The Skin I Live In, Che, The Kite Runner etc.)sounding pristine in the lossless transfer. Some may recognize Janis Joplin singing George and Ira Gershwin's Summertime. Sony offer optional English, French or Spanish subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray. Note: there is a second audio option - an English language 'descriptive' track in lossy Dolby.

The Sony Blu-ray offers only a trailer for the film and some previews.

Pedro Almodóvar's Parallel Mothers is similarly well-established and intricate as most of the director's films. The thread of misplaced identity brilliantly runs into graves of relatives lost in the Spanish Civil War. It's an emotional film about Motherhood, independence, unintentional deception and the bonding of women - all surrounded by the director's penchant for striking interiors of bold colors and his perfect poetic balance of impactful, thoughtful and very human-centric storytelling. He is such an amazing director. The, bare-bones, Sony Blu-ray has impressive a/v of another brilliant Almodóvar film - with an exceptionally fine role for Penélope Cruz. Despite the lack of supplements, this is still recommended!
