No one will ever make movies like Doris Wishman made movies. One of the most prolific women filmmakers in the history of American cinema, writer-director-editor Wishman created collisions between surrealism and exploitation that feel like they materialized from an alternate universe. THE FILMS OF DORIS WISHMAN: THE TWILIGHT YEARS surveys the last major era of Wishman's career. From DEADLY WEAPONS and DOUBLE AGENT 73 (crime epics starring the iconic Chesty Morgan) to LET ME DIE A WOMAN (a semi-documentary about transgender people), AGFA + Something Weird are honored to present these triumphant DIY treasures in dazzling new restorations.

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: AGFA Blu-ray (June 2022): AGFA have transferred a handful of Doris Wishman films to Blu-ray. The Films of Doris Wishman: The Twilight Years is spread over three dual-layered Blu-ray discs. The features - The Amazing Transplant (1970), Love Toy (1971), Keyholes Are for Peeping (1972), Deadly Weapons (1974), Double Agent 73 (1974), The Immoral Three (1975) and Let Me Die a Woman (1977) - are cited as from "2K restorations from the original 35mm camera negatives". For the most part they look quite strong on 1080P with occasional damage, marks and scratches (see samples below.) But these aberrations seem relatively infrequent. Quality varies but most look surprisingly strong with occasional color flecks. Detail is pleasing, texture apparent and depth on some features.

On their Blu-ray, AGFA use a DTS-HD Master dual-mono tracks (24-bit) - all in the original English language. They all seem to have obvious post-DUBing and no credited scores. The sound may be a notch lower than the HD video, but simply a function of the low-budget productions. It's all audible. AGFA offer optional English (SDH) subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The AGFA Blu-ray offer commentaries with Doris Wishman biographer Michael Bowen (Embodiment and Realization: The Many Film-Bodies of Doris Wishman) on Deadly Weapons and a second for that film by Bleeding Skull’s Annie Choi and Joseph A. Ziemba. On Double Agent 73 there is a commentary with filmmaker Frank Henenlotte. Lastly, on Let Me Die a Woman there is a commentary with artist and porn performer Carta Monir. I have yet to indulge. After that are various trailers, a photo gallery and the package has a booklet with writing from Something Weird’s Lisa Petrucci and a vintage Doris Wishman interview by artist Peggy Ahwhesh.

Doris Wishman's films in this package have aspects of trans-identity, Burlesque Chesty Morgan using her mammoth breasts as a weapon to smother men to death, sex slavery, crime, comedy, Harry Reems (of Deep Throat fame), penis transplants, and in The Immoral Three - three young girls must avenge the death of their mother, who was a spy, in order to collect a $3-million inheritance... 70's very edgy fun. Yes? They embrace the definitions of sexploitation and soft-to-harder pornography. Wishman is considered to be a pioneer of sexploitation movies, of the "nudie" and softcore sex genre films. Antiobscenity laws prohibited the showing of these films for many decades. My NSFW samples below are barely scratching the surface of what is here. Let Me Die a Woman is extremely graphic showing medical (actual footage of a gender reassignment operation, which is what gives the film its notoriety), psychological and social explications of being transgender. While these are her latter films we still don't have hardcore pornographic features Satan Was a Lady (1975) and Come With Me, My Love (1976), both of which featured Annie Sprinkle and the sex comedy called Dildo Heaven. For the most part I did not find the films erotic but was keener on the crime-plot angles. AGFA's The Films of Doris Wishman: The Twilight Years triple Blu-ray set certainly shined a light on a director that I knew almost nothing about. Unfortunately, Chesty is pretty gross. Cindy Boudreau, Sandra Kay and Michele Marie in The Immoral Three were cute enough though. The films are weak and low-budget but have some historical significance. I don't know... I thought it was kinda cool - viewing this 70's genre time-capsule. Recommended to a minute niche - who probably already know who they are.
