(aka "The Vampire-Beast Craves Blood" or "The Vampire Beast" or "Blood Beast from Hell" or "The Deathshead Vampire")

Directed by Vernon Sewell
UK 1968

A series of blood-thirsty murders is investigated by Inspector Quennell and Sgt. Allan of Scotland Yard. But when their search for the killer leads them to the door of strange entomologist Dr. Carl Mallinger and his beautiful daughter Clare, events take a nightmarish turn in this 19th-century tale of transformation, monsters, and terror.

Starring the legendary Peter Cushing and directed by Vernon Sewell (Curse of the Crimson Altar) this Tigon cult classic offers up a heady mix of late 60s British horror.

***

A classically told monster movie directed by Vernon Sewell (The Crimson CultBurke & Hare), The Blood Beast Terror is set in motion when mutilated bodies begin appearing in the English countryside, drained of blood. Horror icon Peter Cushing (The Flesh and the FiendsHouse of the Long Shadows) stars as Detective Inspector Quennell, brought in to investigate the deaths. He consults entomology professor Mallinger (Robert Flemyng, The Horrible Dr. Hichcock), but the doctor seems to be hiding a dark secret about his fetching young daughter, Clare (Wanda Ventham, Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter). The deeper Quennell digs into their story, the bloodier the violence, until he discovers a terrifying truth about Mallinger’s experiments that is only revealed in the gruesome final reel. Hearkening back to the classics of Universal Pictures, The Blood Beast Terror offers terrific performances and special effects, and slowly builds to its skin-crawling climax.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: 88 Films Blu-ray (September 2024): 88 Films have transferred Vernon Sewell's The Blood Beast Terror to Blu-ray. We couldn't find extensive difference with Kino's 2022 Blu-ray (still available HERE), that we compared to the Odeon and Redemption's 1080Ps HERE Kino's 2022 Blu-ray was a new transfer on a dual-layered disc also with a max'ed bitrate, robust audio, optional English subtitles and a new commentary (Kim Newman and Stephen Jones.) This 1080P is the marginally best of the three and we've compared a few captures below. Like the Kino this has richer colors (reds / greens) and is smoother in-motion. It's in the 1.66:1 aspect ratio and the HD presentation is quite pleasing with occasional depth, minor grain and a few speckles.

NOTE: We have added the previous 56 large resolution Kino Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, 88 Films use a linear PCM dual-mono track (24-bit) in the original English language. The Blood Beast Terror has a few aggressive moments with attacks from the beastie. The score was credited to Paul Ferris (Maroc 7, The Sorcerers, Revenge of the Blood Beast, Witchfinder General,) adding some tension. 88 Films offer optional English (SDH) subtitles on their Region 'B'-locked Blu-ray.

The 88 Films Blu-ray offers a new commentary by John Hamilton (Beasts In The Cellar: The Exploitation Film Career of Tony Tenser) and Howard Lanning (also editor on Witchfinder General) covering many aspects of the production, Cushing, Sewell and plenty more. It's informative and worth the indulgence. To Cut or Not to Cut spends 25-minutes with Lanning on The Blood Beast Terror and Witchfinder General. Terror at Grim’s Dyke House - The Making of The Blood Beast Terror runs 1/2 hour and has input from focus puller Jim Alloway, production secretary Vivien Duret, make-up artist Rosemarie Mcdonald-Peattie, and standby carpenter Jeff Woodbridge. Lastly are an original trailer and a The Vampire-Beast Craves Blood trailer plus a stills gallery. The package has a reversible sleeve featuring new artwork by Sean Longmore and original poster art, a limited edition O-ring featuring new artwork by Longmore and a booklet featuring notes by Andrew Graves & John Hamilton.

Vernon Sewell's The Blood Beast Terror was part of 88 Films Tigon Collection. They released Doomwatch, The Body StealersCurse of the Crimson Altar, The Sorcerers, Hannie CaulderAu Pair Girls (1972) - but had a relatively small studio output (producing films from 1967-73) with modest budgets but are best remembered for their horror films, directly competing for audiences with Hammer and Amicus. I don't believe there is any connection to the earlier made Revenge of the Blood Beast (1966) with Barbara Steele or Night of the Blood Beast (1958) excepting the former has the same composer, Paul Ferris. I kinda liked this - Cushing (who hated it) raises the bar for the movie, it has entomology, a sexy creature gal aka "were-moth" and grisly murders. To each his own. The 88 Films Blu-ray has the commentary and making of plus a booklet etc. It's the best for the film that was on a Double Bill in the US with the Italian horror Slaughter of the Vampires.
