(aka "The Blackout Murders")

Directed by Philip Kaufman
USA 2004

Ashley Judd (Kiss the Girls, Double Jeopardy) is sensual and stunning as Jessica Shepard, a San Francisco police inspector prowling the wharf for a serial killer whose victims all have one thing in common: her. The investigation becomes more and more twisted as her partner (Andy Garcia, Internal Affairs) behaves strangely, and the police commissioner (Samuel L. Jackson, Changing Lanes) is being asked to remove her from the investigation as she is a prime suspect. All the clues point to her and Jessica begins to suspect that she might be the killer she is looking for. Directed by the great Philip Kaufman (The Wanderers, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Right Stuff) and simmering with nail-biting suspense, Twisted is a provocative, pulse-pounding psychological thriller that will keep you guessing to the very end. Featuring David Strathairn, Leland Orser, Titus Welliver, Russell Wong, Camryn Manheim, Mark Pellegrino, D.W. Moffett and Richard T. Jones.

***

Recently promoted and transferred to the homicide division, Inspector Jessica Shepard feels pressure to prove herself -- and what better way than by solving San Francisco's latest murder? However, as Shepard and her partner, Mike Delmarco, soon discover, the victim shared a romantic connection to her. As more of Shepard's ex-lovers turn up dead, her mind starts to become unstable, and she begins to wonder if she could be the very killer she's trying to track down.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (August 2024): Kino have transferred Philip Kaufman's Twisted to Blu-ray. It is cited as being from a "Brand New HD Master – From a 4K Scan of the Original Camera Negative". Unfortunately there is digitization here. It looks very smeary and has softness, compression artifacts / banding. I don't know where in the process that this occurred but, regardless, it is quite noticeable. HERE is an example.

NOTE: We have added 50 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, Kino offer the option of DTS-HD Master 5.1 surround of stereo tracks (24-bit) in the original English language. Twisted has aggression and there is some head-turning separations. The score is by Mark Isham ( Fire in the Sky, Short Cuts, Little Man Tate, Of Mice and Men, Crossing Over, In the Valley of Elah, A River Runs Through It). It suits the film's twisty thriller moods very well. We also get James Brown's Get Up (I Feel Like Being Like a) Sex Machine and Papa Don't Take No Mess - One More Nite by Johnny Nitro - tunes by Roberto Aguilar, Sandy Rogers and Tierney Sutton. Sounds clean and lively. Kino offer optional English (SDH) subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offers a new commentary by director Phillip Kaufman from the 2004 DVD. He narrates quite a bit and pauses. There is not as much on the production details as we usually get. He identifies actors in their roles from David Strathairn (as Doctor Frank) to Camryn Manheim (as Lisa.) Also repeated from the DVD are three featurettes running about 1/2 hour in total; Creating a 'Twisted' Web of Intrigue, The Investigators - Clues of Crime and San Francisco - Scene of the Crime. There are also a 1/4 hour of deleted scenes with optional commentary - also from the DVD - and lastly a theatrical trailer.

Philip Kaufman's Twisted is kind of a poor cousin to Ashley Judd's superior neo-noirs like High Crimes, Kiss the Girls, Heat and Double Jeopardy. Personally, I've always preferred her in Eye of the Beholder and The Passion of Darkly Noon. Twisted received mostly negative reviews so I'm not that bothered by the flawed image transfer and, essentially, no new extras. Philip Kaufman is an excellent director and I've been waiting a long time for his The Unbearable Lightness of Being to come to Blu-ray - please Criterion? This Kino Blu-ray gets a pass. Weak film and image.
