Directed by Mitchell Leisen
USA 1943

One of Hollywood’s favorite screen duos of all time, Claudette Colbert (The Gilded Lily, It Happened One Night) and Fred MacMurray (The Bride Comes Home, Murder, He Says), join together in the romantic comedy No Time for Love. Sophisticated fashion photographer Katherine Grant (Colbert) is assigned to photograph the tough “sandhog” construction workers at a tunnel project site. One of the cocky, well-built workers, Jim Ryan (MacMurray), falls for the upper-class Katherine, but the picture is not pretty when he loses his job and she hires him to be her assistant. This heartwarming classic proves the old adage that opposites attract! Wonderfully directed by Mitchell Leisen (Hands Across the Table, No Man of Her Own), shot by Charles Lang (Separate Tables) and co-starring Ilka Chase (Now, Voyager), Richard Haydn (The Emperor Waltz), Paul McGrath (A Face in the Crowd) and June Havoc (Gentleman’s Agreement.)

***

In the screwball comedy No Time for Love, Claudette Colbert plays a sophisticated fashion photographer whose vindictive editor decides to teach her a lesson by assigning her to photograph construction workers. After inadvertently causing one of the workers (played by Fred MacMurray) to be fired, she hires him as her assistant resulting in conflict and…possibly romance.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (August 2021): Kino have transferred Mitchell Leisen's No Time for Love to Blu-ray. It is, again, on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate. Far fewer damage marks than some of the recent reviews of these film - still occasional speckles but nothing distracting. It has fine grain support - a little less consistent but exceptional contrast and a very pleasing 1080P HD presentation. The best the film has veer looked on digital.

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a DTS-HD Master / linear PCM mono track (16-bit) in the original English language. No Time for Love has a few aggressive moments with the large mining equipment and another delightfully supportive score by Victor Young (Arise My Love, Union Pacific, The Accused, Strategic Air Command, The Sun Shines Bright, Johnny Guitar, China Gate etc.) sounding clean keeping pace with No Time for Love. Kino offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offers a new commentary by film critic Nick Pinkerton. If you don't know, or haven't heard my glowing reports over the years of his commentaries - this one is along the same lines. He digs very deep - thoroughly researched bringing up surface and extraneous details - reads from reviews / other sources and occasional anecdotes. He's one of the best - if not 'the best' and his discussion always promotes further appreciation of the film, in my opinion. There is also a trailer for No Time for Love and for 11 other, similar, films also on Blu-ray by Kino.

Mitchell Leisen's No Time for Love is a very well-made, fun, film. Great chemistry between Claudette Colbert and Fred MacMurray, plus a strong supporting cast, amusing script and a perfect example of genre of vintage-era romantic comedy. It has a delightful super-hero dream sequence that is very cute. Kino should be highly lauded for releasing so many of these on Blu-ray in  stellar transfers with revealing commentaries. This one is a very entertaining, enjoyable, film that fans will want. Highly recommended!
