Directed by Norman Z. McLeod
USA 1959

Legendary funnyman Bob Hope (The Cat and the Canary, My Favorite Blonde) stars as the yellowest cowboy ever to sit in the saddle in this fast-paced western spoof riddled with rapid-fire laughs and sure-fire stunts! It takes a real sharp-shootin’, rough-ridin’ horseman to keep Jesse James in line. But until he arrives, insurance broker Milford Farnsworth (Hope) will simply have to do. Norman Z. McLeod (Topper, The Paleface) directed this comedy classic co-starring Rhonda Fleming (The Revolt of the Slaves) and Wendell Corey (Desert Fury) as Jesse James. Featuring a cavalcade of cowboy cameos by James Arness, Ward Bond, Gary Cooper, Bing Crosby, Fess Parker, Roy Rogers and his faithful steed Trigger, and many more!

***

Insurance salesman Milford Farnsworth sells a man a life policy only to discover that the man in question is the outlaw Jesse James. Milford is sent to buy back the policy, but is robbed by Jesse. And when Jesse learns that Milford's boss is on the way out with more cash, he plans to rob him too and have Milford get killed in the robbery while dressed as Jesse, and collect on the policy.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (July 2021): Kino have transferred Norman Z. McLeod's Alias Jesse James to Blu-ray. It has some moments where the quality dips but overall provides a decent 1080P, far in advance of SD. Black levels have appreciated depth as do some primary colors. Grain texture can be a bit clunky in the few compromised scenes but this reflects the source condition and is housed on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate. The image isn't going to win any awards but satisfying in relating the films humor and enjoyment.

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a DTS-HD Master dual-track (16-bit) in the original English language. Alias Jesse James has few gunfire, especially the conclusion and it doesn't have significant punch but this would probably be in-line with the production. The score is by Joseph J. Lilley (Girls! Girls! Girls!, Blue Hawaii, Li'l Abner, Road to Bali) sounding light and supportive. Kino offer optional English (SDH) subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offers only a trailer for Alias Jesse James (and numerous other Bob Hope and related trailers) as an extra.

Bob Hope's Alias Jesse James is another enjoyable 50's comedy. It's rife with Wild West clichés and the latter cameos of western icons. Hope fans will certainly enjoy it and the reasonable price (now 34% OFF at the wring of this review) for the bare-bones disc. The Kino Blu-ray is the best we are likely to get for this fun film that is filled with the comedian's one-liners. To that group this is recommended!
