(aka "La rivolta degli schiavi ")

Directed by Nunzio Malasomma
Italy | Spain | West Germany 1960

THE REVELS... THE RAVAGES... THE REVOLT OF THE AGES! In this biblical action-adventure, set during the waning years of the Roman Empire, Fabiola (Rhonda Fleming, Jivaro, Bullwhip), the beautiful daughter of a wealthy patrician, falls in love with a Christian slave, Vibio (Lang Jeffries, Alone Against Rome). Veteran writer/director Nunzio Malasomma (15 Scaffolds for a Murderer) directed this epic international hit featuring early performances by Fernando Rey (That Obscure Object of Desire) and Serge Gainsbourg (Je t'aime moi non plus).

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

Kino bring a sword-and-sandal, Euro-produced, flic Revolt of the Slaves to Blu-ray. The epic film is on a single-layered transfer in the original 2.35:1 aspect ratio. The image has some minor speckles and scratches in spots (see last capture) but colors have some richness (reds). It actually looks fine - not stellar but very watchable in the 1080P with some nice grain exported.

The audio transferred via the option of uncompressed DTS-HD Master tracks (16-bit) in a 2.0 stereo track in the English language. I didn't notice a preponderance of out-of-sync DUBs. There are some aggressive effects with whips, big cats, stretching racks etc. and a noble score by
Angelo Francesco Lavagnino (The Savage Innocents, Chimes at Midnight, Othello, Legend of the Lost). There are no subtitles offered on this Region 'A'-locked Blu-ray.

Extras are limited to a trailer and a few other film trailers.

I had not seen "Revolt of the Slaves" but despite the lack of acclaim - I liked it. It seems like a lower budget at times, and they could have punched-up the dialogue, but the latter half has some decent production values and I enjoyed Rhonda Fleming.
Kino's Blu-ray is bare bones but at a lower-price tier may provide some entertainment.
