ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): The Vanishing is such an impacting film and it was a pleasure to re-watch it on Criterion's new Blu-ray. I was also impressed to watch Seijun Suzuki's Youth of the Beast - a favorite from the director - on Masters of Cinema Blu-ray. I was kinda so-so on the 'International Cut' of Guilty of Romance but Olive's new Blu-ray also includes the, superior, 1/2 hour longer, 'Japanese Cut' of the film. The celebration of Federico Fellini's I Clowns is also adeptly rendered to Blu-ray in a desirable package via the MoC gang in the UK. I'm a big fan of Zoolander - it also makes me laugh and the film is so visual it definitely benefits from the new Blu-ray a/v. The Incredible Melting Man is schlocky but retains some intangible charisma and the new Arrow Blu-ray is stacked. Early David Cronenberg Shivers foreshadows the grassroots director's style and unmistakable horror themes. Once again Arrow takes the lead with a massive Blu-ray package. Landmark 3-D effort Dragonfly Squadron gets restored and put to Blu-ray - nostalgic fans should flock to this one. The China Syndrome is still a gripping film with strong performances and is now available on Blu-ray from Image Entertainment. Cauldron of Blood with a barely conscious Boris Karloff is the Blu-ray dog of the week offering very little value. Gregory reviewed the impressive DVD set; Eclipse 25: Basil Dearden's London Underground as well as 1959's Shake Hands with the Devil with James Cagney while Eric covered the intriguing A Haunting at Preston Castle and completed two comparisons with Grade 'A' trash, The Toxic Avenger and an equally limited horror flic The Inside.. Take care - “You’ve changed me forever. And I’ll never forget you.”

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Dragonfly Squadron 3-D BD - In May 1950, Major Matt Brady is redeployed to Pusan, South Korea. His mission there is to train South Korean pilots in the defensive struggle. Also, there are air support exercises in case of the need to evacuate the Americans. Colonel Schuller sends Brady and Captain MacIntyre to the airbase in Kungju. The American instructors only have 25 days left to introduce the South Korean pilots to US tactics. Blu-ray Release Date: October 14th, 2014

Guilty of Romance BD - On a rainy day, a woman's dead boy is found in an apartment. Female detective Kazuko (Miki Mizuno) is in charge of the case. Although Kazuko has a happy life with her family, she can't disconnect her relationship with her lover. While trying to unravel the mysterious murder case, Kazuko finds out the secret of university assistant professor Mitsuko (Makoto Togashi) and Izumi (Megumi Kagurazaka) who is a devoted housewife. Her husband is a popular novelist. Blu-ray Release Date: October 14th, 2014

Youth of the Beast BD - When a mysterious stranger muscles into two rival yakuza gangs, Tokyo's underworld explodes with violence. Youth of the Beast was a breakthrough for director Seijun Suzuki, introducing the flamboyant colors, hallucinatory images, and striking compositions that would become his trademark. The film that revitalized the yakuza genre and helped define the inimitable style of a legendary cinematic renegade. Blu-ray Release Date: October 27th, 2014

I Clowns BD - One of the Fellini films which has been out of circulation for many years, I clowns [The Clowns] has long been revered by Fellini enthusiasts for the several decades since its release as among the Maestro's finest works a thrilling spectacle, once seen for the first time, and a picture which after multiple viewings easily takes its place alongside such classics as La strada, Le notti di Cabiria, La dolce vita, Satyricon, Amarcord... but in a register all its own. I clowns plays out in dazzling colour and in episodic cascade, just as in all of Fellini's late-60s-and-beyond films. As the circus rolls into town, and the big-tent gets erected, the clowns execute their acts with feverish can-you-believe-it bravado. It's all true and yet not a "documentary" per se; rather, something in-between a dramatic-comedic portrayal of gags-at-play and the memoria of all that makes the spark for childhood inspiration to ignite into creative virtuosity... and/or into something like Federico Fellini. Blu-ray Release Date: October 27th, 2014

The Vanishing BD - A young man begins an obsessive search for his girlfriend after she mysteriously disappears during their sunny vacation getaway. His three-year investigation draws the attention of her abductor, a seemingly mild-mannered professor who, in truth, harbors a diabolically clinical and calculating mind. When the kidnapper contacts the man and promises to reveal his lover’s fate, The Vanishing unfolds with intense precision, culminating in a genuinely chilling finale that has unnerved audiences around the world. Blu-ray Release Date: October 28th, 2014

The Incredible Melting Man BD - Essentially a seedy '70s version of The Quatermass Experiment, this painfully cheap production from writer/director William Sachs involves the horrific plight of returning astronaut Steve West (Alex Rebar), the sole survivor of a disastrous expedition to the rings of Saturn. The fatal outcome of the mission apparently involved the discovery of a space-borne virus, or radiation, or something (it's never made quite clear) that killed the rest of the crew and is causing West's flesh to melt and slough off his body. For reasons unexplained, the only relief from the pain of his condition can be found by consuming live human cells. After munching on a few bystanders, West escapes into the surrounding woods, pursued by NASA researcher Dr. Nelson (Burr DeBenning) and a disorganized posse of military monster-hunters. Unable to stop his rapid dissolution or resist his cannibalistic urges, West agonizes over his dilemma (as indicated by laughable scenes of Rebar trying to register emotional anguish through layers of goop), but he still finds time to terrorize a few locals, including the topless Rainbeaux Smith and a pair of comic-relief oldsters trying to score some lemons. Blu-ray Release date: October 13th, 2014

The China Syndrome BD - This gripping 1979 drama about the dangers of nuclear power carried an extra jolt when a real-life accident at the Three Mile Island nuclear plant in Pennsylvania occurred just weeks after the film opened. Kimberly Wells (Jane Fonda) is a TV reporter trying to advance from fluff pieces to harder news. Wells and cameraman Richard Adams (Michael Douglas, who also produced) are doing a story on energy when they happen to witness a near-meltdown at a local nuclear plant, averted only by quick-thinking engineer Jack Godell (Jack Lemmon). While Wells and Adams fruitlessly attempt to get the story on their station, Godell begins his own investigation and discovers that corporate greed and cost-trimming have led to potentially deadly faults in the plant's construction. Blu-ray Release date: October 14th, 2014

Cauldron of Blood BD - Also known as Blind Man's Bluff, Cauldron of Blood is a Spanish-made horror film long on gore but short on logic. Several beautiful models have disappeared, and the prime suspect is blind sculptor Boris Karloff, a surly and secretive sort who produces skeletal statues. Lovely model Rosanda Monteros tries to get to the bottom of the mystery, and of course nearly winds up a victim herself. The killer is not Karloff but his wife Viveca Lindfors, who hopes to sustain her husband's reputation by providing fresh skeletons for his artwork. Lindfors ends up hoisted on her own petard when she accidentally dips her arm in a vat of acid. Blu-ray Release date: October 14th, 2014

Shivers BD - Initially reviled in its native land (some critics took exception to the fact the film was largely funded by the Canadian taxpayer), Shivers is an intensely claustrophobic, subversive masterpiece and an essential entry in the oeuvre of one of the horror genre s most gifted auteurs. Some 40 years after its release, it still retains its power to shock. Starliner Island is an idyllic community. Cut off from the rest of the world, the luxury apartment block affords its occupants the chance to escape from the hustle and bustle of the big city. But this isolation is to prove fatal when a new breed of parasite a combination of aphrodisiac and venereal disease which arouses sexual aggression in its hosts is let loose in the building, resulting in an orgy terror and mayhem. Blu-ray Release Date: October 13th, 2014

Zoolander BD - Clear the runway for Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller), VH1's three-time male model of the year. His face falls when hippie-chic Hansel (Owen Wilson) scooters in to steal this year's award. The evil fashion guru Mugatu (Will Ferrell) seizes the opportunity to turn Derek into a killing machine. It's a well-designed conspiracy and only with the help of Hansel and a few well-chosen accessories like Matilda (Christine Taylor) can Derek make the world safe for male models everywhere. Blu-ray Release date: October 14th, 2014

Eclipse 25: Basil Dearden's London Underground - After mastering the mix of comedy, suspense, and horror that helped define the golden age of British cinema, Basil Dearden (along with his producing partner Michael Relph) left the legendary Ealing Studios and, in the late fifties and early sixties, created a series of gripping, groundbreaking, even controversial films. In dealing with racism, homophobia, and the lingering effects of World War II, these noir-tinged dramas burrowed into corners of London rarely seen on-screen. This set of elegantly crafted films—Sapphire, a dissection of a hate crime; The League of Gentlemen, a deft heist adventure suffused with postwar melancholy; Victim, a landmark gay character study, starring Dirk Bogarde; and All Night Long, a provocative transposition of Othello to the swinging London jazz scene—brings this quintessential figure of British cinema out of the shadows. DVD Release Date: January 25th, 2011

Shake Hands with the Devil (1959) - All-time Hollywood favorite James Cagney stars in a gripping tale of the struggle between the Irish Republican Army and the British Black and Tans. When an Irish-American medical student (Don Murray) loses his best friend to violence, he abandons his apolitical stance and takes up arms with the rebellion…but he is soon tempted by a comely British hostage. DVD Release Date: July 15th, 2014

A Haunting at Preston Castle - Although highly derivative, PRESTON CASTLE is technically well-made and takes advantage of one of California's most striking "haunted" locations and is undemanding entertainment with some effective jumps. Characterization-wise, the film starts out interestingly enough with the freshly-dumped Liz seeming to be the sympathetic character but seeming less so as subsequent scenes demonstrate how far she has grown apart from her two friends who have not managed to get out into the world. All that is out the window of course once Ashley disappears and then Liz and Danny are wandering around in circles searching for her (the dialogue similarly falls back on reiterations of "bad things have happened here" rather than advancing the backstory with additional incidents historical or fabricated for the script). DVD Release Date: October 7th, 2014

The Inside - While in a pawnshop a young man comes into possession of a second hand video camera; discovering a tape still inside he plays back the footage and witnesses an horrific series of events involving a group of teens in an undisclosed location. Using the footage as a guide he retraces the steps to where the events seemingly occurred. Deciding to investigate he discovers to his horror not only the truth of the events on the tape but comes face to face with a supernatural terror from which he may not escape… DVD Release Date: October 21st, 2014

The Toxic Avenger - The foundation stone of the Troma label's trash-movie empire, The Toxic Avenger introduces the character of nerdy janitor Melvin, who suffers heaps of abuse from local bad-guys and is stuffed into a vat of toxic waste while dressed in a ballerina outfit. He emerges mutated into a Swamp Thing/Hulk-style monster hero who romps around the blighted township of Tromaville, New Jersey, offing the grotesque villains in nastily gruesome ways and mooning over his blind true love. The Troma style is unique, and perhaps predates the anything-gross-for-a-laugh approach of the Farrelly Brothers by a good 10 years, but it sometimes wavers between the good-natured gags and genuinely unpleasant plot images that somewhat spoil the tone. DVD Release Date: August 18th, 2014
