Ireland 2010

A "found footage" film with a framing device that functions more to lengthen the running time than explain what more it uncovers in the wraparound, THE INSIDE feels more like a filmmaker experimenting with the sub-genre than a horror film. Although actor-turned-writer/director/editor/cinematographer Eion Macken (SIREN) states in the making-of that are a lot of things in Irish history to inspire horror films; and he eschews banshees, leprechauns, and sídhe in favor of something more abstractly-formed (partly inspired by the worst in man, as well as possibly a paucity of imagination). A man (Macken) picks up a camcorder at a pawn shop and discovers on it the birthday celebration of Corina (Siobhan Cullen, THE CROOKED MILE) with her four friends Louise (Vanessa Matias Fahy, GHOSTWOOD), Sienna (Kellie Blaise), Sian (Natalia Kostrzewa, THE LOOKING GLASS), and Cara (Tereza Srbova, 360). They make the unfortunate - although all-too-common in horror movies - mistake of deciding to celebrate in an abandoned warehouse found by Corina's boyfriend Barry (Sean Stewart, DOROTHY MILLS). Their revelry attracts a trio of derelicts - Eamo (Brian Fortune, WRATH OF THE CROWS), Scat (Karl Argue, WHEN THE SKY FALLS), and Hughie (Emmett Scanlan, COLOUR FROM THE DARK) - who kill Barry and assault the girls; but they have also wakened something else with a voracious appetite for human flesh. |

Although photographed in HD, much of THE INSIDE has been intentionally degraded in various fashions to emulate the look of a consumer DVD camera (further distorted by simulated dropouts and distortions, in addition to some shock flashcuts). Behind the scenes footage in the making-of segment reveals that the film was also significantly darkened and made moodier in post. The 2.0 audio is fine although it too has some artificial artifacts introduced for verisimilitude. A separate encode of the film offers picture-in-picture commentary from the director, the producer, and one of the actresses. Among the discussion points are the director's assertion that the monster is summoned or created from the negative energy (although some may take issue with his conflation of the homeless with "the dregs of society") while the producer discusses the location (an actual sprawling warehouse storing antiques - the devilish goat statue is an existing prop rather than a created one - and the caves are actual old servants passages beneath the neighboring Georgian houses). A trailer and three teasers round out the package. |
