ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): I was so impressed with BFI's new 4K-restored Blu-ray of Henri-Georges Clouzot's Wages of Fear - one of the greatest of all thrillers looking and sounding amazing while including a commentary. Wow. I was equally pleased with Kino's stacked Blu-ray of Sam Peckinpah's Junior Bonner - a masterful modern western with an unforgettable Steve McQueen performance. It includes a wonderful group commentary. Billy Wilder's Avanti! is a brilliant romantic-comedy - a wonderful film experience in the glory of 1080P. Both Godard Blu-rays from Kino; Le Gai Savoir and La Chinoise provide exceptional presentations and both offer commentaries. William Dieterle's Portrait of Jennie is one of the most beloved fantasy-romance films of all time, and Kino's new Blu-ray exports a fine 1080P viewing with new commentary. Heaven. Kino give is their Blu-ray of Mario Bava's iconic Kill, Baby Kill and we've compared it to two other BDs. It remains one of the moist atmospheric films ever made. Sticking with Bava - we also get a Blu-ray release of his pasta-western spoof Roy Colt and Winchester Jack which includes a desirable Tim Lucas commentary. How can we resist? Amores Perros is on Lionsgate Blu-ray and is still a superb film - a widely open window into desperate struggling lives that fatally crash together. Dimension 5 is a time-travel spy popcorner with the enticement of ToS'ers Captain Pike (Jeffrey Hunter), Elaan of Troyius (France Nuyen) and an obviously DUB'ed 'Oddjob' from Goldfinger (Harold Sakata.) An impressive looking Blu-ray. Titanic (1943) is a fascinatingly slanted German take on the disastrous maiden voyage of H.M.S. Titanic. Now on Blu-ray from Kino. Lucio Fulci's The Devil's Honey comes to Severin Blu-ray and is a compelling sleaze-fest where perversities abound. Rolling Vengeance comes to the higher resolution - a nasty pay-back tale in rural farm country with a monster-truck as the weapon of choice. Hmmmm.... No DVDs coverage this week, but in the next few days.

“Do something you really like, and hopefully it pays the rent. As far as I'm concerned, that's success.. .”. - Tom Petty (RIP)

Eat well - have a delicious week!!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Rolling Vengeance BD - In rural Canada, six brothers drinking and joyriding in a pickup truck cause an accident that kills Joey Rosso's (Don Michael Paul) mother (Susan Hogan) and sisters (Alyson Court, Marsha Moreau). As it turns out, the brothers are the sons of an influential entrepreneur named Tiny Doyle (Ned Beatty), and they all get off scot-free. When Joey's father (Lawrence Dane) is murdered as well, there's only one thing left for Joey to do: build a massive truck to mow the entire Doyle family down. Blu-ray Release date: October 17th, 2017

Le Gai Savoir BD - This experimental minimalist drama by Jean-Luc Godard is a totally plotless exploration of film language. The setting is a darkened soundstage with only a single light to illuminate two actors who discuss philosophy. The philosophy reflects the director's most radical thoughts about making films. When not discussing films, the two play word-association games. Though named Le Gai Savoir, this film is not based on the book of the same title by Friedrich Nietzsche but, very loosely, on Jean Jacques Rousseau's Emile. Blu-ray Release date: October 10th, 2017

The Devil's Honey BD - Horror legend Lucio Fulci directed this outrageous erotic thriller about sexual revenge. Jessica (Bianca Marsillach) loses her kinky boyfriend Johnny when he dies on the operating table after a motorcycle accident. She holds Dr. Wendell Simpson (Brett Halsey) responsible and takes him captive at a beach-front house. Simpson is a bit strange himself, painting prostitutes' pantyhose red before he can get excited, but Jessica outdoes him in every way. During the days of his captivity, Simpson must eat dog food, submit to hot wax torture, and -- worst of all -- listen to Jessica reciting ridiculous poetry in the nude. Blu-ray Release date: September 26th, 2017

Titanic (1943) BD - Technically, this Titanic is an excellent catastrophe film; its shots of the ship sinking were later used by the 1958 British film without credit. Somewhat true to the facts though peppered with fictional good Germans both on and below deck the film ends with a trial scene that acquits the White Star Line management, followed by a final slide denouncing England s eternal quest for profit. Blu-ray Release date: October 17th, 2017

Amores Perros BD - Three stories of life along the margins in Mexico City converge in this inventive thriller. Octavio is sharing an apartment with his brother, which leads to a serious problem when he falls in love with Susanna, his sister-in-law. Octavio and Susanna want to run away together, but Octavio has no money. He does, however, know a man who stages dog fights, and he volunteers his dog Cofi for the next round of fights. Cofi bravely rises to the occasion, but the dog's success in the ring leads to a violent altercation. Elsewhere, Daniel, a successful publishing magnate, leaves his family to take up with a beautiful model, Valeria. Blu-ray Release Date: October 10th, 2017

Junior Bonner BD - Sam Peckinpah eschews his slow-motion bullet ballets for this quiet character study of ex-rodeo cowboy turned drifter Junior Bonner (Steve McQueen), who returns home to Arizona to reconcile with the family he hasn't seen in years. Bonner is shocked to see that the solid family he was hoping to come back to is breaking apart. His parents, Ace (Robert Preston) and Elvira (Ida Lupino), have separated, and his brother Curley (Joe Don Baker) has turned into a heartless real estate tycoon, parceling off sections of his parent's land for quick money. With nowhere to turn and nowhere to run, Bonner has to face himself and try to find a way to regain his self-respect. He is given that opportunity at the town's Fourth of July Rodeo, where he is determined to mount and ride and unrideable bull. Blu-ray Release date: October 31st, 2017

Avanti! BD - This enchanting yet dark romantic comedy stars Jack Lemmon and Juliet Mills as a pair of mismatched lovers helplessly drawn into a series of seemingly hopeless but humorous situations as in Lemmon's The Out-of -Towners two years earlier. Lemmon is Wendell Armbruster Jr., an overbearing American business tycoon forced to travel to the beautiful Italian island of Ischia to claim the body of his recently departed father. What begins with a rather elementary premise evolves into a succession of somber twists and turns, as Armbruster meets Pamela Piggott (Mills), the daughter of his father's mistress, who, Lemmon is appalled to learn, died alongside Armbruster Sr., while zipping through the Italian countryside in his sportscar. Blu-ray Release date: October 10th, 2017

La Chinoise BD - Perhaps Godard's most political film, "La Chinoise" is also Godard at his most primitive in terms of filmmaking and his most extreme in terms of mise-en-scene. On one side Godard openly displays his views on America and their imperialism by a very aggressive and beautiful mise-en-scene, but on the other side his approach towards Maoism and Communism borders the naïve, here voiced thru the students and their discussions, as it portraits a group of young students of Sorbonne, who spend their summer vacation discussing ideology and end it all with assassinating a Russian cultural attaché, before returning to school. Blu-ray Release Date: October 17th, 2017

Wages of Fear BD - In a squalid South American oil town, four desperate men sign on for a suicide mission to drive trucks loaded with nitroglycerin over a treacherous mountain route. As they ferry their explosive cargo to a faraway oil fire, each bump and jolt tests their courage, their friendship, and their nerves. The result is one of the greatest thrillers ever committed to celluloid, a white-knuckle ride from France’s legendary master of suspense, Henri-Georges Clouzot. Blu-ray Release Date: October 23rd, 2017

Roy Colt and Winchester Jack BD - This atypical 1970 offering from Italian horror maestro Mario Bava is meant as a spoof of spaghetti westerns, but the wooden acting of pretty boys Brett Halsey and Charles Southwood (Roy and Jack respectively) adds an unintended layer of humor. The two gunslingers are rivals seeking buried gold and the favors of a fickle Indian prostitute (Marilu Tolo) who wants the loot for herself. Teodoro Corra chews the sand dunes as “the Reverend,” a dynamite-tossing Russian outlaw in priestly garb. Faces familiar from Sergio Leone westerns abound in the supporting cast. The pseudo-Morricone score by Piero Umiliani is a hoot. Blu-ray Release Date: October 10th, 2017

Dimension 5 BD - Justin Power (Hunter), agent for Espionage, Inc., returns from a mission in which he used a time-travel belt to steal secret plans. He is told by his supierior, Cane (Donald Woods), he is to be teamed with a Chinese agent to combat an Asian crime ring, Dragon, headed by crime lord Big Buddha (Sakata). A sister agency has discovered Dragon plans to destroy Los Angeles if United States forces are not withdrawn from east Asia. Blu-ray Release date: September 26th, 2017

Portrait of Jennie BD - Not a success upon its release, "Portrait of Jennie" has grown in its appeal in the years since - the ethereal story of an expansion of time, a collapse of boundaries, or an overlapping of both. The chemistry between Cotten and the luminous Jennifer Jones was never better. The stunning cinematography by Oscar-nominated Joe August and composer Dimitri Tiomkin's use of themes by Claude Debussy add immeasurably to the dreamlike quality of the film. Blu-ray Release Date: October 24th, 2017

Kill, Baby Kill BD - This oppressive and visually overwhelming exercise in the conjuring of atmosphere allowed Mario Bava to crank the gothic stylistic tendencies of Black Sunday into overdrive, finally permitting him to churn out scene after scene of hallucinatory intensity with only the barest threads of a plot to hold it all together. The avenging demonic forces of his past films have been distilled here into the single, chilling image of a ghostly young girl, rolling a sinister pale ball down hallways and street corners as she drives those around her to certain death. Rarely has a more haunting or unforgettable specter graced the horror cinema, and even had he never made another film after this, Bava would have already proven himself as a master filmmaker.
