ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): I was thrilled to see Jacques Tourneur's Out of the Past on Blu-ray. One of the essential Noir gems looking sweet and film-like in 1080P - our top pick of the week. We should prominently mention Sony's Fright Night Blu-ray out of Germany - which is effectively marginalizing the current high-priced auctions of the Limited Edition Twilight Time. Holiday Inn with Bing and Astaire gives both the original black and white and colorized version in HD on the new Blu-ray. Peckinpah's The Killer Elite has much to offer from the director's fans - as does the new Blu-ray with substantial extras. Topkapi is a fun caper flic from Jules Dassin - now available on Blu-ray. Unfortunately, Chabrol's Nightcap (Merci pour le chocolat) seems to have video issues on Cohen's new Blu-ray. Eric covered 4 DVDs this week with You and the Night and Paris-Manhattan - two comedies out of France, 2012's intense, and lauded, drama Hero of the Day and a suggestively titles comedy Live Nude Girls. Take care - “If you have it, you don’t need anything else and if you don’t have it, it does not matter what else you have.”

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

The Killer Elite BD - After a brilliantly cryptic opening, The Killer Elite settles into Peckinpah's most apparently straightforward action film since The Getaway. Built around the internal politics of a San Francisco company which sidelines in dirty work that even the CIA won't touch, it concentrates on the painful recovery of an agent (Caan), wounded in knee and elbow in a double-cross, and his search for revenge. During Caan's lengthy recuperation, Peckinpah contemplates the old themes of betrayal, trust and humiliation. And through the action of the second half, Caan (like other Peckinpah heroes) comes to some sort of understanding. The set pieces (a Chinatown shoot-out, a dockland siege, the superb ships' graveyard climax) are excellent, as are so many secondary scenes. Twilight Time Blu-ray Release Date: September 2014

Topkapi BD - After years of enduring movie lampoons of his 1955 crime-caper classic Rififi, director Jules Dassin topped them all with his own spoof, Topkapi. It's a rather disreputable crew that teams for the elaborate jewel theft masterminded by Maximillian Schell. Sexy Melina Mercouri Mrs. Dassin is probably the best of the batch: the others are faffling Robert Morley, unreliable Gilles Segal and Jess Hahn. Bumbling Peter Ustinov who won an Oscar for his performance is duped into helping the thieves, and soon finds himself uneasily straddling both sides of the law. As in Rififi, the theft itself taking place in Istanbul's Topkapi Palace museum is played out in near-complete silence. We won't tell you how the crooks are foiled; just be advised that money flies out the door when something else flies in the window. Topkapi was based on The Light of Day, a somewhat more somber novel by Eric Ambler. Blu-ray Release date: October 7th, 2014

Holiday Inn BD - The plot of Holiday Inn was merely an excuse on which to hang 14 Berlin songs. Crosby, Astaire, and Virginia Dale are a musical act, which breaks up when Crosby decides to retire to a farm. But Crosby quickly grows bored and decides to turn his farm into an inn and nightclub, which will be open only on national holidays. He then teams with a new partner, played by Marjorie Reynolds. Suddenly, Astaire, jilted by Dale, pays a visit, and the two men's musical and romantic rivalry starts up again. Blu-ray Release date: October 7th, 2014

Fright Night BD - Charley (Ragsdale) has seen a coffin being carried into the house next door and a corpse being dragged out, but no one will take him seriously. In desperation he enlists a TV vampire killer, who's initially charmed by neighbour-from-hell Jerry (Sarandon), before noticing the absence of his reflection in a mirror. A farrago of cartoonish exaggeration (mouthfuls of fangs, razor-sharp talons and eyes like burning coals), knowing humour and '80s camp, it shouldn't even begin to work, and yet, strangely, it does, sort of, thanks to the assured handling of writer/director Holland, and two performances in particular - Geoffreys as Charley's pal Evil, and McDowall as the timid vampire killer. The music helps, covering an ambitious range from piano-murdering suspense-raisers, through disco fodder, to a Sparks tune, 'Armies of the Night', by Ron and Russell Mael. Sony Blu-ray Release date: September 18th, 2014

Nightcap (Merci pour le chocolat) BD - Claude Chabrol's Merci Pour le Chocolat is a light confection with a tasty Isabelle Huppert performance at its center. Working from a 1948 recipe by a sometime scriptwriter for Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Chabrol knocks off a witty psychological thriller—more gothic than noir. Set by the placid shores of Lake Lausanne, the movie opens with Swiss chocolate factory heiress Mika Muller (Huppert) marrying celebrated concert pianist André Polonski (Jacques Dutronc) for the second time, in a ceremony where family business blends with gossipy intrigue. Blu-ray Release Date: September 30th, 2014

Out of the Past BD - Out of the Past is so perfect a film noir that it is considered practically a textbook example of the genre. In his first starring role (it had previously been offered to John Garfield and Dick Powell), Robert Mitchum plays Jeff Bailey, the friendly but secretive proprietor of a mountain-village gas station. As Jeff's worshipful deaf-mute attendant (Dick Moore) looks on in curious fascination, an unsavory character named Joe (Paul Valentine) pulls up to the station, obviously looking for the owner. Jeff is all too aware of Joe's identity; he's been dreading this moment for quite some time, knowing full well that it will mean the end of his semi-idyllic existence, not to mention his engagement to local girl Ann (Virginia Huston). In a lengthy flashback, the audience is apprised of the reasons behind Jeff's discomfort - and thus begins a tale of treachery, betrayal and intrigue that extends into the present day and turns Jeff's life upside down. Out of the Past was remade in 1984 as Against All Odds, with Jane Greer cast as the mother of her original character. Blu-ray Release Date: August 12th, 2014

Live Nude Girls - When Shane inherits a gentleman s club from his estranged uncle, he leaves his Midwestern home for party life of Los Angeles. Once he arrives, Shane finds the club run by a booze hound (Dave Foley), employing a horde of wild, sexy strippers and on the verge of bankruptcy. Now, he must save his inheritance, while possibly making strip club history in the process! DVD Release Date: August 19th, 2014

Hero of the Day - Allen, a documentary filmmaker, scores the story of his life when Mark Chambers, a former pro football star with a lot of financial baggage, agrees to be the subject of a movie; he unwittingly becomes an accomplice to Mark s efforts to turn his life around. As the film crew records Mark s daily activities from selling his championship ring and confronting drivers of suspiciously parked vehicles to riding a roller coaster and gambling at an underground fight club Allen discovers a whole new dimension to his childhood hero. However, when Mark s impulsive decisions begin to affect everyone s safety, Allen must figure a way to prevent his new friend from traveling down a dark path. DVD Release Date: September 23rd, 2014

Paris-Manhattan - Alice is a Parisian pharmacist who has a fixation on Woody Allen and his films. She has a huge portrait of him hanging in her bedroom, with which she tends to converse, seeking his wise counsel about life. She even hands out DVDs of his films to her customers as medicine for their ailments. Her parents have a sense of urgency for her to find a man, but none can match Woody Allen, not even the alarm specialist Victor who services the pharmacy. But there is one thing a man could do to impress her - introduce her to Woody Allen. DVD Release Date: September 23rd, 2014

You and the Night - YOU AND THE NIGHT features The Stud, The Teen, The Slut, and The Star as guests at a pansexual orgy thrown by the mysterious and sexy ménage-a-trois of Mathias, Ali, & Udo. Heir to the playful sex romps of early Francois Ozon, the dreamy color palette of Dario Argento, and Kenneth Anger's erotic occultism, YOU AND THE NIGHT is an erotic and wild take on THE BREAKFAST CLUB with each character baring their inner souls to the group to find acceptance and love. An original score by M83 sets the dreamy and transcendent tone for the eternal night. Also featuring a kinky cameo by the legendary Béatrice Dalle. DVD Release Date: October 14th, 2014
