(aka "Les rencontres d'après minuit" )

directed by Yann Gonzalez
France 2013

Graced with striking yet minimalist photography by Simon Beaufils (ORDINARY PEOPLE) and a seductive score by M83 (BLACK HEAVEN) - headed by director Yann Gonzalez's brother Anthony - the ornate chamber play that is YOU AND THE NIGHT plays as if THE BREAKFAST CLUB had been a orgy with broody French sex addicts directed by Alain-Robbe Grillet circa LA BELLE CAPTIVE. Sophisticates Ali (Kate Moran, MAN AT BATH) and Matthias (Xavier Dolan regular Niels Schneider, HEARTBEATS) and their cross-dressing gypsy maid Udo (Nicolas Maury, REGULAR LOVERS) are sensory vampires who hold orgies in their futuristic (if this were the eighties) apartment to "reap the pleasures of youth" and sustain their centuries-long existence. Tonight's batch are "The Stud" (Eric Cantona, ELIZABETH), "The Teen" (Alain-Fabien Delon), "The Star" (Fabienne Babe, Jacques Rivette's WUTHERING HEIGHTS), and "The Slut" (Julie Brémond), but the night's revelry is continually postponed as each guest sheds their archetypes and reveals the reasons for their sexual escapism through accounts of their origins as well as fantasies and recurring dreams (one of which includes a kinky cameo by BETTY BLUE's Beatrice Dalle). The group manage to achieve an intimacy that draws them together into almost a family. This less-fleshy type of desire, however, cannot sustain Matthias who feels a pull from the beyond, and the orgy's one rule threatens to rupture these new-found bonds for the others.

Comments

Strand Releasing's high-bitrate, progressive, anamorphic encode of this low-budget, intimate 35mm feature has a bit of noise in a couple smoky or foggy backgrounds (edge enhancement varies from faint to moderate), but the feature is visually compelling enough to ignore it and is probably the best we'll get in SD. While the 1.66:1 aspect ratio seems perfectly framed for the feature, the end credits have indents at the top and bottom of the frame suggesting it could have been further matted to a 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The 5.1 track is largely front-oriented during the dialogue scenes with the surrounds coming into play mainly with the scoring of M83. The optional English subtitles are lyrical and without noticeable errors.

Extras consist of a short film by director Yann Gonzalez set at a rave - virtually a silent film accompanied only by pulsing music - that shares some images and themes with the main feature. Also included is a gallery of alternate artwork for the film, the theatrical trailer, and trailers for other Strand releases.
