ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Front and centre - three classic, essential Blu-rays and a strong recommendation on a modern super-hero film in the new format. Lean's visually awesome Lawrence of Arabia has a new 4K resolution - restored and remastered - looking amazing on Blu-ray. Orson Welles enigmatic The Trial also advances handily in 1080P. The Masters of Cinema group have transferred De Mille's Cleopatra with a ravishing Claudette Colbert looking rich and wonderfully textured on Blu-ray. I'll tell ya, I was mightily impressed with the new super-hero package of The Avengers on Blu-ray. Wow. Cyrano de Bergeac is a great film and a nice choice to bring to Blu-ray. Certainly recommended! On Criterion Blu-ray 70's black-comedy Eating Raoul looks outstanding - fabulous supplements too. Alliance, in Canada, improve upon the teen-noir Brick with a superior Blu-ray rendering. Goodbye First Love is a very deliberately-paced (almost Romer-seque) examination of adolescent love - very introspective, very French... some will appreciate, others will be bored. Eric covered 3 DVDs that all have an intriguing premise. The Harsh Light of Day has vampire revenge, violent actioner The Raid and Dragon Wasps a science-fiction leaning adventure. Have an emotionally prosperous week!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

The Trial BD - If the great Welles could be said to have been influenced in any of his work, here, I would say it was by “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari”, especially in the scenes of Josef K entering/fleeing the artists loft . In turn, if there is any film that this film might have influenced it would be “Brazil”, particularly the scenes of Josef K. at his work, where we witness a ponderous bureaucratic machine in motion. Welles’ “filling in the blanks” of Kafka’s not completely finished novel, may be some subject for debate, but, without a doubt this is a close to the spirit of “Kafkaesque” as is likely to ever be brought to light (and shadow). Blu-ray Release Date: September 10th, 2012

Lawrence of Arabia BD - Winner of seven Academy Awards®, including Best Picture of 1962, Lawrence of Arabia stands as one of the most timeless and essential motion picture masterpieces. The greatest achievement of its legendary, Oscar-winning director David Lean (1962, Lawrence of Arabia; 1957, The Bridge on the River Kwai), the film stars Peter O’Toole – in his career-making performance – as T.E. Lawrence, the audacious World War I British army officer who heroically united rival Arab desert tribes and led them to war against the mighty Turkish Empire. Blu-ray Release Date: September 10th, 2012

Brick BD - What is the audience for this movie? It is carrying on in its own lifetime a style of film that was dead before it was born. Are teenage moviegoers familiar with movies like "The Maltese Falcon"? Do they know who Humphrey Bogart was? Maybe it doesn't matter. They're generally familiar with b&w classics on cable, and will understand the strategy: The students inhabit personal styles from an earlier time. Blu-ray Release Date: August 16th, 2011

Eating Raoul BD - A sleeper hit of the early 1980s, Eating Raoul is a bawdy, gleefully amoral tale of conspicuous consumption. Warhol superstar Mary Woronov and cult legend Paul Bartel (who also directed) portray a prudish married couple who feel put upon by the swingers living in their apartment building. One night, by accident, they discover a way to simultaneously rid themselves of the “perverts” down the hall and realize their dream of opening a restaurant. A mix of hilarious, anything-goes slapstick and biting satire of me-generation self-indulgence, Eating Raoul marked the end of the sexual revolution with a thwack. Blu-ray Release date: September 24th, 2012

Cleopatra BD - A pre-code film that sneaked onto screens just as the censorious Hays Office began cracking down on Hollywood's racier propositions, Cleopatra is a libertine paean to decadence and depravity that can still send a viewer's mind reeling and pulse thumping - all courtesy of the Golden Age's swampiest psychosexual auteur, Cecil B. DeMille ( The Ten Commandments; The Greatest Show on Earth; The King of Kings). Blu-ray Release date: September 24th, 2012

Cyrano de Bergeac BD - Recreating his stage role, Jose‚ Ferrer (Moulin Rouge) stars as Edmond Rostand's Cyrano, a 17th-century French cavalier, poet and master swordsman. This beloved tale of romance and swashbuckling came to the screen in this lavish production from producer Stanley Kramer (Judgment at Nuremberg). Cyrano is madly in love with the beautiful Roxanne (Mala Powers), but assumes that she'd never love him back due to his cathedral of a nose, so he reluctantly aids the handsome, but simple Christian (William Prince) in the pursuit of his one true love. Ferrer won the 1950 Best Actor Academy Award and Golden Globe for his brilliant and heartbreaking performance. Directed with luster by Michael Gordon (Pillow Talk) with a rousing score by Dimitri Tiomkin (Rio Bravo) and adapted for the screen by Carl Foreman (The Guns of Navarone). Blu-ray Release date: September 18th, 2012

The Avengers BD - Marvel Studios delivers the ultimate comic-book film, which ties together such characters as Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) for a big-screen franchise team-up like no other. Show runner Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly) adapted and helmed the script by Zak Penn, which focuses on a superhero lineup put together by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) to combat a hostile force out to destroy the world. Scarlett Johansson once again dons the Black Widow costume, with Jeremy Renner stepping into the role of ace archer Hawkeye. Tom Hiddleston also returns as Thor's ever-deceptive brother, Loki. Blu-ray Release date: September 25th, 2012

Goodbye First Love BD - Following the critically acclaimed Father of my Children, Mia Hansen-Løvereturns with the equally impressive Goodbye First Love. Loosely auto-biographical in style, the film deals with what Hansen-Løve has described as the defining and central part of her adolescence. The blooming of first love, subsequent heartbreak and renewal are portrayed with a simple directness of style which nevertheless allow the complexity of emotions to be given full range. Lola Créton (Bluebeard), playing the central character of Camille, creates an incredibly subtle performance allowing the audience to embrace our protagonists growth into maturity and personal liberation. Blu-ray Release date: September 10th, 2012

The Raid - Deep in the heart of one of Jakarta’s most deprived slums stands an impenetrable high-rise apartment block. To most it is 30 floors of Hell to be avoided at all costs but for many of the city's most dangerous killers and gangsters, including the area's most notorious crime lord, it is a fortress-like safe house protecting them from the law. Even for the bravest and most experienced police officers it is considered a no-go area. In a desperate bid to flush these violent criminals and their leader from their haven once and for all, an elite SWAT team is tasked with infiltrating the building and raiding the apartments floor by floor, taking out anyone who stands in their way. Cloaked under the cover of pre-dawn darkness, the SWAT members make their move and enter the block not realising that this is the easier part of the mission. Once inside, it soon becomes terrifyingly apparent that the real problem at hand is surviving long enough to be able to get out again. DVD Release Date: September 24th, 2012

The Harsh Light of Day - A home invasion leaves writer Dan Shergold (Dan Richardson) paralyzed and his wife brutally murdered. Embittered over the fruitless ongoing police investigation, Dan retreats from the world with only his caregiver Fiona (Sophie Linfield, DON'T LET HIM IN) for company until Infurnari (Giles Alderson, THE POSSESSION OF DAVID O'REILLY) turns up on his doorstep with a unique offer of revenge. Although he initially resists his new vampiric urges, Dan learns that to use his enhanced senses to track down his wife's killers, and he discovers that robbery is actually far down the list on their actual criminal interests. DVD Release Date: October 1st, 2012

Dragon Wasps - When her father mysteriously disappears on an expedition, beautiful entomologist Gina Humphries and her fiery assistant, Rhonda, set out to search the rain forests of Belize. Due to numerous robberies and assaults in the jungle, they are escorted by heavily-armed soldiers. Guerillas, lead by the infamous Jaguar, ambush the convoy and incite a bloody shootout. Just when things can t get worse, a horde of murderous Dragon Wasps, massive flying bugs that shoot flame from their abdomens, swarms the soldiers. Now the military must defeat Jaguar s bandits and survive the fearsome insect onslaught as they venture inside the Dragon Wasps hive. DVD Release Date: September 17th, 2012
