ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Criterion's Blu-ray of Michael Haneke's The Piano Teacher gets top spot this week. A formalist masterwork that remains a shocking sensation, on a magnificent Blu-ray loaded with supplements. I really enjoyed Mario Bava's Eric the Conqueror - a colourful, swashbuckling epic of treachery, heroism and forbidden love on stunning Arrow, Region FREE, Blu-ray with Tim Lucas commentary. Nu'ff said. Bruno Dumont's delightful homage-comedy, Slack Bay is described as "gloriously funny and outrageously deep' and looks amazing on Kino's new Blu-ray. Signal One have produced a Region 'B' Blu-ray of Elia Kazan's tense Panic in the Streets - tracking a deadly virus through the shadowy streets of New Orleans starring Richard Widmark and Jack Palance as the 'carrier'. Speaking of the latter actor and of Noir, Arrow bring us Robert Aldrich's The Big Knife in a gorgeous grain-rich 1080P image - but we've identified the Blu-ray as missing a short scene. The Fox With the Velvet Tail is as stylish a Giallo as its title prefaces. Mondo Macabro's Blu-ray features a new commentary by Troy Howarth for this murder mystery set on the luxurious Côte d'Azur. Also in that genre, Lamberto Bava's A Blade in the Dark has a serial killer stalking multiple babes - it's on 88 Films Blu-ray for Giallo lovers. 1982's The Slayer please its fans in a brand new 4K Blu-ray transfer by Arrow. The package is loaded with supplements including 2 commentaries and more. The Creeps, a goofy comedy-cum-horror, comes to Blu-ray in a new widescreen HD transfer, vaulting over the 1.33:1 DVDs. On SD, Eric reviewed The Transfiguration about a vampire-obsessed nascent serial killer loner and his social challenges. Capture Kill Release is about a couple who plots to murder a random stranger just for the thrill of it. Valkyrien is a highly rated Norwegian TV series about a doctor who runs an illegal, underground clinic in an old bomb shelter, where he treats criminals, emergency patients. Baby Steps is a weak gay-comedy out of Taiwan and The Windsors is a comedic soap opera re-imagining the lives of the British Royal Family.

“Part of filmmaking is always a guessing game, and part of it is always a game of trust.”. - Greg Kinnear

Have a great Labor Day!!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Panic in the Streets BD - Elia Kazan's 'Panic in the Streets' has Richard Widmark playing Dr. Clinton Reed of the US Public Health Service who is chasing down a 'carrier' named Blackie (typical Jack Palance roles). He is one of a remaining few carrying the pneumonic plague, a deadlier airborne version of bubonic plague. Time become their greatest enemy tracking down Blackie in the untrusting streets of New Orleans. Blu-ray Release Date: July 31st, 2017

The Big Knife BD - Charles Castle, one of Hollywood's biggest stars, looks like he has it all. But his marriage is falling apart and his wife is threatening to leave him if he renews his contract. Studio boss Stanley Shriner Hoff isn t taking the news too well, and he ll do anything he can to get his man to sign on the dotted line even if means exposing dark secrets... Blu-ray Release Date: August 28th, September 5th, 2017

Eric the Conqueror BD - In 786 AD, the invading Viking forces are repelled from the shores of England, leaving behind a young boy Erik, son of the slain Viking king. Years later, Erik (George Ardisson, Juliet of the Spirits), raised by the English queen as her own, becomes Duke of Helford, while across the sea, his brother Eron (Cameron Mitchell, Blood and Black Lace) assumes leadership of the Viking horde and sets his sights on conquering England once again, setting the two estranged brothers on a collision course that will determine the fates of their respective kingdoms... Blu-ray Release Date: August 28th, 29th, 2017

A Blade in the Dark BD - A giallo blood-opera, which features some of the most gruelling sequences in the genre’s vast canon, A Blade in the Dark holes up a talented composer in a spacious Tuscany retreat. Unfortunately, a maniac is prowling the immediate environment and no one, including our heroic musician, is safe from this hack-happy psychopath's collection of dangerously sharp weapons. Co-starring the legendary Michele Soavi. Blu-ray Release date: August 24th, 2015

The Fox With the Velvet Tail BD - This 1971 Italian/Spanish giallo is a hugely enjoyable and very stylish murder mystery set on the luxurious Côte d'Azur. Spanish director José María Forqué - who later made the controversial Beyond Erotica - brings together a talented and good looking cast, one of the best cinematographers of the day (Alejandro Ulloa) and a fantastic, lounge style score from Maestro Piccioni to create a twisty, and twisted, tale of deception and revenge. The director's long career at the more prestigious end of Spanish cinema and the presence of award winning scripter Rafael Azcona - who worked with many top European film makers - give the film an edge of sophistication alongside its enjoyably devious narrative. Blu-ray Release date: September 12th, 2017

The Slayer BD - Two young couples set off to a secluded island for what promises to be a restful retreat. But the peace is short-lived: as a storm batters the island, troubled artist Kay begins to sense that a malevolent presence is here with them, stalking them at every turn. Is she losing her mind, or are her childhood nightmares of a demonic assailant coming to terrifying life? Blu-ray Release Date: August 21st + 29th, 2017

Slack Bay BD - The bourgeois and extremely eccentric Van Peteghem family among them Juliette Binoche, Fabrice Luchini, and Valeria Bruni Tedeschi have settled in for another summer at their cliff- top villa overlooking the picturesque Slack Bay. Their leisurely rhythm of sunbathing and seaside constitutionals is soon interrupted by the arrival of two bumbling inspectors investigating a string of tourists gone missing (and serving full-on Keystone Kops). As the macabre mysteries mount and love blossoms between the family's genderqueer teen and the son of a local fisherman, Binoche and company ratchet the slapstick up to eleven. It's no wonder director Bruno Dumont (Li'l Quinquin, Camille Claudel 1915) cites Peter Sellers, Monty Python, and Laurel and Hardy as cinematic influences for his delightful foray into winking, absurdist farce. Blu-ray Release date: September 12th, 2017

The Creeps BD - Dracula. Frankenstein. The Werewolf. The Mummy. These scary subjects of innumerable nightmares have been brought to life, but there was a problem in the process... Though imbued with most of the expected attributes, the creatures' creator made a little error in the equation. They're three feet tall and not happy at all. These mini-monsters must now embark on a mission to complete their creation at any cost. Blu-ray Release Date: September 11th, 2017

The Piano Teacher BD - In this riveting study of the dynamics of control, Academy Award–winning director Michael Haneke takes on Nobel laureate Elfriede Jelinek’s controversial 1983 novel about perverse female sexuality and the world of classical music. Haneke finds his match in Isabelle Huppert, who delivers an icy but quietly seething performance as Erika, a piano professor at a Viennese conservatory who lives with her mother in a claustrophobically codependent relationship. Severely repressed, she satisfies her masochistic urges only voyeuristically until she meets Walter (Benoît Magimel), a student whose desire for Erika leads to a destructive infatuation that upsets the careful equilibrium of her life. A critical breakthrough for Haneke, The Piano Teacher—which won the Grand Prix as well as dual acting awards for its stars at Cannes—is a formalist masterwork that remains a shocking sensation. Blu-ray Release date: September 26th, 2017

Valkyrien - Ravn is a surgeon working in the Emergency Department, happily married to his beloved wife Vilma. But when Vilma contracts a life-threatening illness and is refused further treatment by the hospital, Ravn abandons the established healthcare system and continues treating her in secret. Aided by Leif, a corrupt civil defence worker and doomsday prepper, Ravn finds himself forced into creating an illegal clinic deep below ground in central Oslo, treating Leif s wide network of contacts from the underworld. While Leif believes it is only a matter of time before society collapses, Ravn hopes for a miracle and that love will prevail. However, in his search to find a cure for Vilma, Ravn is forced to compromise both his ethics and morals. DVD Release Date: August 21st, 2017

Capture Kill Release - A young married couple documents their descent down the rabbit hole as they seek to fulfil one of their darkest desires: kill a stranger and film it for posterity. Strain and second thoughts pull at their devotion to each other as they carefully plot out a heinous crime for the sake of curiosity. While they may have carefully thought out every small step and detail of getting away with murder, nothing can prepare them for the guilt and the weight of moving on in the aftermath. DVD Release Date: September 25th, 2017

The Transfiguration - An official selection at the Cannes Film Festival, writer/director Michael O'Shea's debut feature The Transfiguration follows troubled teen Milo who hides behind his fascination with vampire lore. When he meets the equally alienated Sophie, the two form a bond that begins to challenge Milo's dark obsession, blurring his fantasy into reality. A chilling portrait of violence, The Transfiguration is an atmospheric thriller set against the grit of New York City. DVD Release Date: August 8th 2017

Baby Steps - From Oscar-winning Producer Li-Kong Hsu (Ang Lee's The Wedding Banquet, Crouching Tiger HIdden Dragon, Eat Drink Man Woman) and Stephen Israel (Swimming With Sharks and G.B.F.), comes this multi-cultural comedy-drama, which takes a funny but honest look at gay family issues in complicated dynamo of a cross-generational Taiwanese and American family. Danny, a Taiwanese-American man, longs to have a baby with his American partner Tate, but their attempts at international surrogacy are complicated by Danny's meddling mother, who wants to control every aspect of the process -- all the way from Taipei. The Windsors - Outrageous comedy series imagining the royal family as you've never seen theme before. The Windsors are divided: Prince Charles (Harry Enfield) wants his son Wills (Hugh Skinner) to show a more regal detachment but Wills wants to fly the air ambulance and mingle with the people. Kate (Louise Ford) is trying to find acceptance in the royal family, and Camilla (Haydn Gwynne), alarmed at Wills and Kate's popularity, is plotting to destroy them. Meanwhile, Harry (Richard Goulding) is chasing Pippa Middleton's (Morgana Robinson) famous behind, Prince Edward's fallen on hard times, Fergie (Katy Wix) is partying like it's 1982 and Beatrice (Ellie White) and Eugenie (Celeste Dring), strapped for cash, decide to launch themselves online as make-up vloggers.
