The Early Films Of Olivier Assayas [Blu-ray] - RB UK Arrow

ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Peter Medak's The Changeling is a memorable and superior horror from the 70's with George C. Scott and, his wife, Trish Van Devere uncovering the mysteries of his haunted house. There are stacked, Region FREE, 4K-restored Blu-rays from both Second Sight (UK) and Severin (US). It gets our top spot this week. One of my favorites, the 1960 Village of the Damned gets a stellar 1080P transfer from Warner Archive - the Blu-ray retains the excellent commentary - a must own. Cinderella Liberty is a wonderfully touching film now on Blu-ray from Twilight Time. The 1080P exports cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond's rough hewn, low-lit visuals providing a true verite expression. Brilliant. Arrow gives Massimo Dallamano's What Have They Done to Your Daughters? the Blu-ray treatment. The case could be made for it as a Poliziotteschi or a Giallo - regardless a superior thriller with plenty of extras including a new commentary. Sergio Leone's first film is the sword-and-sandal epic The Colossus of Rhodes with the title character being a mighty bronze statue straddling the harbor. It is on Blu-ray from Warner Archive - repeating the informative Christopher Frayling commentary. Kino bring us David O. Selznick's production of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer to Blu-ray with two versions of the film. Twain's family fun and adventure abides. The Revolt of Mamie Stover has Jane Russell as a prostitute who succeeds in the real estate business in Hawaii with the backdrop of Pearl Harbor. Twilight Time have but it on, Region FREE, Blu-ray. Smashing Time is a 60's comedy from Britain, on Kino Blu-ray, with Rita Tushingham and Lynn Redgrave venturing through hip London. Genghis Khan is a loose historical biography and has a strong cast with Omar Sharif, Stephen Boyd, James Mason, Eli Wallach, Telly Savalas, Robert Morley etc. - now on Blu-ray. Dagon is a typically over-the-top Stuart Gordon horror but there is definitely a place for his visually extravagant genre films. This has great atmosphere and is on Region FREE Blu-ray from Umbrella. No DVDs this week - maybe next week, probably not!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Village of the Damned BD - Based on John Wyndham's 1957 novel The Midwich Cuckoos, and starring George Sanders as the most skeptical of the "miracle" parents, Village gets off to a rousing start when the isolated town of Midwich is cordoned off after some invisible knockout gas descends from above. A few weeks later, every female of childbearing age is pregnant. Much anger and consternation ensue, especially in those families for which the blessed event isn't a blessing. Blu-ray Release Date: July 31st, 2018

The Colossus of Rhodes BD - Filmmakers often begin their directing careers with works of limited scale. Sergio Leone began with a Colossus. Spectacle is king in The Colossus of Rhodes, Leone's first credited film as a director. Sun-bronzed heroes (including toga-wearing Rory Calhoun) battle tyranny. Prisoners scramble for their lives in coliseum pageants of doom. Usurpers connive. Revolution erupts. And towering over all the excitement is the mighty bronze Colossus that straddles the harbor, fighting foes by dropping burning oil from the huge cauldron it holds and firing streams of molten lead from the catapults in its headpiece. Once upon a time, it dazzled the ancient world. Cult-movie fans think it's pretty nifty, too. Blu-ray Release Date: June 26th, 2018

Dagon BD - A boating accident off the coast of Spain sends Paul and his girlfriend to the dilapidated village of Imboca looking for help. As night falls people start disappearing and things not quite human begin to appear. Paul finds himself pursued by the entire town. Whilst running for his life Paul uncovers Imobca's dark secret...the freakish half-human creatures that populate the town. They pray to Dagon monstrous God of the sea. All outsiders are sacrificed the men flayed alive and the women offered as unwilling brides to bear Dagon's unholy offspring. Blu-ray Release Date: August, 2018

Genghis Khan BD - Prince Temujin (Omar Sharif) watches the execution of his father by the ruthless Mongol leader, Jamuga (Stephen Boyd), who forces Temujin and his people into slavery. Escaping into the mountains, Temujin vows to avenge his father and unite the Mongol people. He kidnaps and eventually marries Bortei (Françoise Dorléac), a woman betrothed to Jamuga. He then raises an army and saves China from Jamuga's invaders, prompting the emperor (Robert Morley) to convey upon him the title Genghis Khan. Blu-ray Release Date: July, 2018

Cinderella Liberty BD - Adapted from his novel by Darryl Ponicsan and directed by Mark Rydell, Cinderella Liberty (1973) stars James Caan as a footloose sailor who, on leave, falls in love with a Seattle hooker (played by Marsha Mason, who earned an Academy Award nomination.) Complicating matters is the swabby’s growing affection for the prostitute’s 11-year-old son (Kirk Calloway), who clearly would benefit from the presence of a father figure. Also starring Eli Wallach, and featuring cinematography by the great Vilmos Zsigmond and music from the one and only John Williams Blu-ray Release Date: July, 2018

The Revolt of Mamie Stover BD - In 1941, prostitute Mamie Stover (Jane Russell) has no choice but to flee San Francisco when the police turn on her and want her out of town. Figuring Hawaii would be a great place to begin anew, Stover books a trip aboard a Honolulu-bound boat, where she happens to meet writer Jim Blair (Richard Egan), who is quite taken with the former streetwalker. However, when the ship reaches Hawaii, Stover soon falls back into her old ways and begins working at a nightclub, much to Blair's dismay. Blu-ray Release Date: July, 2018

The Changeling BD - After his wife and daughter are killed in a snowplow accident, composer John Russell (George C. Scott) returns to Seattle to teach music at his alma mater. The local historical society rents him a long abandoned mansion where he will have plenty of room to work. However, he is not alone in the house. A barrage of clanging sounds wake him up at the same time every night. In a hidden attic room, he discovers a music box whose tune is the one he has been composing. With the help of historical society representative Claire Norman (Trish Van Devere), John digs into the past of the house and discovers the accidental death of a little girl; however, a seánce reveals that the spirit to be that of a crippled little boy whose spirit will not rest until John uncovers the truth behind his murder. Blu-ray Release Date: August 7th - 20th, 2018

What Have They Done to Your Daughters? BD - A teenage girl is found hanging from the rafters of a privately rented attic, pregnant and violated. Hot-headed Inspector Silvestri (Claudio Cassinelli) and rookie Assistant District Attorney Vittoria Stori (Giovanna Ralli) are assigned to the case, the scope of which grows substantially when they discover that the dead girl was part of a ring of underage prostitutes whose abusers occupy the highest echelons of Italian society. Meanwhile, a cleaver-wielding, motorcycle-riding killer roars through the streets of Brescia, determined to ensure that those involved take their secret to the grave. Blu-ray Release Date: August 14th, 2018

Smashing Time BD - Swinging London becomes limping London when Rita Tushingham and Lynn Redgrave make the scene and have a Smashing Time. Carnaby Street will never be the same after Rita and Lynn embark on a mod adventure to fulfill their dreams of excitement and success. In the beginning, they stick together and get by working as cocktail hostesses and dish washers. However, their luck changes in no time and they part ways while swinging into fame, Redgrave as a recording star and Tushingham as “the face of the 1970s”, realizing that smashing times must come to an end. Blu-ray Release Date: August 14th, 2018

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer BD - Never forcing its pace, the film manages to include most of Twain's classic sequences, including the fence-whitewashing episode, Tom's rescue of Becky Thatcher (Anne Gillis) from the wrath of their schoolmaster (Olin Howlin), Tom and Huck's "death and resurrection" after the boys briefly skipped town for an idyll on a remote island, the murder trial of town drunk Muff Potter (Walter Brennan) and ultimately unmasking of the vicious Injun Joe (Victor Jory) as the real killer, and of course the chilling climax in the cave, wherein Tom protects Becky from the fugitive Injun Joe.
