Directed by Mark Rydell
USA
1973

Adapted from his novel by Darryl Ponicsan (The Last Detail) and directed by Mark Rydell (The Cowboys), Cinderella Liberty (1973) stars James Caan as a footloose sailor who, on leave, falls in love with a Seattle hooker (played by Marsha Mason, who earned an Academy Award® nomination.) Complicating matters is the swabby’s growing affection for the prostitute’s 11-year-old son (Kirk Calloway), who clearly would benefit from the presence of a father figure. Also starring Eli Wallach, and featuring cinematography by the great Vilmos Zsigmond (Close Encounters of the Third Kind) and music from the one and only John Williams, available on this Twilight Time release as an isolated track.

***

A sailor falls in love with a prostitute but finds it difficult to cope when she resumes her former lifestyle after they are married. When they first meet over a game of pool, she takes him home, where he gets to know her young son, and romance quickly blossoms between the grown-ups. Once hitched, she carries on as before and the sailor prevails upon an old navy colleague for help.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

The Twilight Time 1080P transfer is in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio on a dual-layered disc with a high bitrate. The 2007 DVD was also dark - but perhaps not as dark as the Blu-ray visuals but this appearance and rough-hewn, vérité, look is very intentional and certainly benefits the film's strong sense of realism. It was, in no way, meant to be glossy and crisp. Cinderella Liberty appears to be a strong replication of the film's original appearance.

Twilight Time give the option of a robust DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel stereo or an original mono track - both 24-bit. There isn't extensive aggression or depth exported by the film.
There is a score John Williams (Images, The Missouri Breaks, War Horse, The Fury, The Cowboys) augmenting the film subtly - however many will remember the film for his You're So Nice To Be Around and Wednesday Special with lyrics and vocals by Paul Williams. There are optional English (SDH) subtitles on the region FREE Blu-ray disc.

Twilight Time include the extras found on the old DVD - Rydell gives us a good commentary and details the lack of cooperation that the US Defense department gave and the methods that they utilized to circumvent it to procure naval equipment (like the ship in the first scene). His recollections of the film after, what he claims is, 25 years are quite good and he occasionally narrates but gives valuable details that only a director/producer could supply. He talks with genuine affection for the cast and crew. There is an un-restored vintage 10 minute featurette with Rydell on the locational shooting. There is also a 50 second TV spot and a trailer. The package has liner notes.

I remember seeing Cinderella Liberty over 40-years ago and it remains a realistic, and very touching film. It is a favorite.  The authentic a/v presentation and supplements offer value and this
Blu-ray, and especially the film, are both absolutely recommended.
