Directed by Henry Levin
USA
1965

An extraordinary all-star cast – including Omar Sharif in the title role, Stephen Boyd as his longtime rival/mentor, Françoise Dorléac as the seductive woman between them, James Mason as a Chinese leader, and Eli Wallach as a ferocious villain – is the highlight of Genghis Khan (1965), a spectacular biopic of the brutal Mongolian military genius. Also on hand are Robert Morley, Telly Savalas, Michael Hordern, and Woody Strode. Henry Levin (Journey to the Center of the Earth, also from Twilight Time) directs; the epic action – shot primarily in Yugoslavia – was photographed by the great Geoffrey Unsworth.

***

Prince Temujin (Omar Sharif) watches the execution of his father by the ruthless Mongol leader, Jamuga (Stephen Boyd), who forces Temujin and his people into slavery. Escaping into the mountains, Temujin vows to avenge his father and unite the Mongol people. He kidnaps and eventually marries Bortei (Françoise Dorléac), a woman betrothed to Jamuga. He then raises an army and saves China from Jamuga's invaders, prompting the emperor (Robert Morley) to convey upon him the title Genghis Khan.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

The Twilight Time 1080P transfer is in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio on a dual-layered disc with a high bitrate. The film has both an abundance of earthy brown colors as well as some impressively vibrant costumes that look wonderful in the HD transfer. Detail is solid and the film has consistent visuals with only one incident of noticeable damage (see capture below of hovering white blotches in the sky.) The Blu-ray visuals are impressive in-motion - the BD maintains the film's epic feel and supports the extensive art direction.

Twilight Time again give a robust DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel transfer at 24-bit. There are plenty of effects in the film from horses to battles and individual combat. There is modest depth exported.
The score is composed by Dusan Radic and suits the film well adding a 13th Century-feeling with bass drums and a faint orchestral resonance. There are optional English (SDH) subtitles on the region FREE Blu-ray disc.

Twilight Time only offer the film's theatrical trailer as an extra on the disc. The package has linear notes included.

Genghis Khan is quite a bold effort with a 3.5 million dollar budget in 1965. It is unique in how it covered the Mongol warlord and the time period. It has a strong cast with Omar Sharif, Stephen Boyd, James Mason, Eli Wallach, Telly Savalas, Robert Morley etc. although at time the portrayals seem awkward. I will still very entertained by the adventure and biographical aspects of the film. The a/v presentation has value and this
Blu-ray, is recommended to fans of historical epics.
