ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Lynch's Twin Peaks 'The Entire Mystery' 10 X Blu-ray set is one of the most anticipated releases of the year. We've given some of our initial impressions. I LOVED the restoration of Robert Weine's The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari on the German Blu-ray - boding very well for the upcoming Masters of Cinema release. I thoroughly enjoyed re-visiting François Truffaut's Shoot the Pianist on Artificial Eye Blu-ray. Wonderful. The super fun, vintage, romance film Born Yesterday has been put to Blu-ray by Twilight Time. Thumbs up! Roman Polanski's Venus in Fur is filled with witty conversation fusing a link between literature, theatre and life. I've always enjoyed the complex and homoerotic western Warlock - with Blu-ray the best way to appreciate the film's subtleties. Martin Ritt's Paris Blues is a very good film with plenty to enjoy including the uncompressed Jazz soundtrack on the Blu-ray. More Truffaut with the director's classic Jules and Jim coming to Region 'B' Blu-ray from Artificial Eye. The Last Horror Film Blu-ray may be imperfect but it's a darn-sight improved over the DVD. Eric covered 4 DVDs this past week - Lucky Bastard, The Addicted (Rehab), Greasepaint and the documentary Drive: From Wheelchair to Race Car. Enjoy yourselves!... Gary.

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

The Last Horror Film BD - A grossly underrated slasher gem! The infamous Joe Spinell, best known for his iconic role in Maniac, delivers his 'career defining performance' (Bill Gibon, DVD Talk) as an depraved, obsessed fanatic. Vinny Durand (Spinell) trails beautiful actress Jana Bates (fellow Maniac-alum Caroline Munro), to the Cannes Film Festival determined to have her star in his first film. As Durand's disturbing fascination grows, a mysterious killer begins slaughtering all people in Jana's entourage. Is the obsessed fanatic and the psychotic killer one in the same? Will this be Jenna's Last Horror Film? This stellar treatment of this forgotten classic, includes engaging Spinell-memorializing supplemental material, and is a must-own for any horror film enthusiast. Blu-ray Release Date: July 21st 2014

Jules and Jim BD - Hailed as one of the finest films ever made, Jules and Jim charts, over twenty-five years, the relationship between two friends and the object of their mutual obsession. The legendary François Truffaut directs, and Jeanne Moreau stars as the alluring and willful Catherine, whose enigmatic smile and passionate nature lure Jules (Oskar Werner) and Jim (Henri Serre) into one of cinema’s most captivating romantic triangles. An exuberant and poignant meditation on freedom, loyalty, and the fortitude of love, Jules and Jim was a worldwide smash in 1962 and remains every bit as audacious and entrancing today. Artificial Eye Blu-ray Release date: July 28th, 2014

Shoot the Pianist BD - François Truffaut portrays a film noir world of gangsters and intrigue, with Charles Aznavour as a famous concert pianist who leaves his former life behind to play in a sleazy Parisian bar. He gradually becomes involved the the criminal activities of the big-city underworld. Blu-ray Release Date: July 28th, 2014

Twin Peaks 'The Entire Mystery' BD - On stunning High Definition Blu-ray, Twin Peaks: The Entire Mystery is a comprehensive collection with every episode from the complete television series; both the U.S. and international versions of the series’ Pilot; the North American Blu-ray debut of David Lynch’s follow-up feature Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me; and nearly 90 minutes of deleted and extended scenes from the film. The set also features newly transferred Log Lady introductions for each episode; picture upgrades to many shots in the TV series; a new featurette with series creator Lynch and the actors who portrayed the Palmer family which includes a mesmerizing return to the lives of their characters today; and hours of never-before-released material that dives into the fascinating story behind the celebrated pop culture classic. Blu-ray Release Date: July 29th, 2014

Born Yesterday BD - Director George Cukor’s 1950 screen adaptation of Garson Kanin’s hit play, Born Yesterday, is a classic of movie comedy, revolving around a corrupt junk dealer (Broderick Crawford) who comes to Washington to “buy” a congressman or two. Fatally, he brings along a Sleeping Beauty, his chorine mistress, Billie Dawn (the great, the unique Judy Holliday in her Oscar™-winning performance); under the ministrations of a newspaperman (William Holden) hired to “refine” her, Billie awakens to an appreciation of her own shrewd brain—and the nastier ways of her bully boyfriend. Blu-ray Release date: July, 2014

Venus in Fur BD - Alone in a Parisian theatre after a day of auditions, director Thomas (Mathieu Amalric) is complaining over the phone to his fiancée about the poor quality of the actresses. As he prepares to leave Vanda (Emmanuelle Seigner) suddenly appears: an unbridled and brazen whirlwind of energy who embodies everything Thomas hates. But when Thomas finds himself backed into a corner and lets her try her luck, he is amazed to see Vanda transformed. Not only has she found the right props and costumes, but she understands the character (whose name she shares) intimately, and knows all her lines by heart. The "audition" lengthens and intensifies, and Thomas's attraction starts to develop into an obsession. Blu-ray Release date: July 28th, 2014

Paris Blues BD - The second film of director Martin Ritt with both Paul Newman and Sidney Poitier, it's set in a city that has long been a haven for black musicians eager to escape the racism of the U.S. Newman is Ram Bowen, a trombone player who makes his living in a jazz group, which also includes tenor man Eddie Cook Sidney Poitier, while studying music and aspiring to a career as a "serious" composer. Eddie stays in Paris to bask in the respect that its people feel for his music, a respect rarely accorded him in the States. Blu-ray Release date: July 22nd, 2014

Warlock BD - Warlock offers us a mean-spirited, mercenary Henry Fonda and an honest, peaceloving Richard Widmark. A Wyatt Earp-like frontier marshal, Fonda agrees to protect the small town of Warlock from an outlaw gang, but only if he's permitted to plunder the town's cash reserve. Widmark, the town deputy, is a reformed outlaw whose willingness to fend off the invading criminals is motivated by his fondness for his new neighbors. Looming large in the proceedings is Anthony Quinn as the glory-grabbing Fonda's sidekick. Adapted by Robert Alan Aurthur from a novel by Oakley Hall, Warlock is a good example of the "thinking man's westerns" prevalent in the late 1950s-early 1960s. Euro Video Blu-ray Release Date: October 11th, 2012

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari BD - Undoubtedly one of the most exciting and inspired horror movies ever made. The story is a classic sampling of expressionist paranoia about a hypnotist who uses a somnambulist to do his murders, full of the gloom and fear that prevailed in Germany as it emerged from WWI. There are plenty of extremely boring sociological/critical accounts of the film; best to avoid them and enjoy the film's extraordinary use of painted light and Veidt's marvellous performance. Incidentally, the influence of Caligari on the cinema is much more problematic than some historians suppose. Thematically it has rarely been copied, and the style only really infiltrated in dream sequences and other odd devices. Blu-ray Release Date: June 27th, 2014

Lucky Bastard - Ever wanted to sleep with a real Porn Star? A lucky young guy named Dave (portrayed by Jay Paulson) wins a contest to have sex with a famous porn star who goes by Ashley Saint (Betsy Rue). But when the shy and awkward Dave arrives on the Lucky Bastard set, things do not go as planned and a day of fantasy turns into a nightmare. Reality TV-style cameras spread throughout the house capture the action to reveal the terrifying truth. DVD Release Date: July 1st, 2014

The Addicted (Rehab) - 25 years after a patient in a drug rehab clinic commits suicide, 4 friends decide to spend a night in the abandoned clinic to try and film some of the reported paranormal goings-on. Shortly thereafter, an up and coming TV journalist is persuaded to spend a night in the clinic with 3 of her friends to try and film some of the spooky activity that is rumored to be going on. In the course of one night, Nicole, her boyfriend and their two friends discover the sickening truth about the history of the clinic and have to face a very real possibility that they might never leave. DVD Release Date: July 24th, 2014

Drive: From Wheelchair to Race Car - Mike Bauer was born to be fast and lived to chase his dreams from acting and singing to motor sports - until a tragic motorcycle accident left him paralyzed, in chronic pain, depressed, and on the verge of suicide. When he meets Dr. Scott Falci, a rehabilitative neurosurgeon and an amateur race enthusiast, who recognizes Mike s potential, they venture into the uncharted territory of designing a race car with adaptive controls specifically designed for the paraplegic driver. Will climbing behind the wheel of this new race car be enough to rehabilitate his damaged psyche? DVD Release Date: June 24th, 2014

Greasepaint - When Joey Thurmond, a former professional wrestler and rodeo cowboy, quits the police force to realize his dream of performing as a clown full time, he recruits his family and puts his life s savings into the show. However, pressures mount while on the road when his acrobat is threatened with deportation and the 24/7 schedule puts a strain on his relationship with his co-star and son. Can Joey keep NoJoe s Clown Circus going until the end of the season? DVD Release Date: July 1st, 2014
