ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey):  I can't add much more that my review extolling the Region FREE Arrow, 4K Restored, Blu-ray of Dario Argento's The Bird With the Crystal Plumage The rich image is painterley in-motion and the package is stacked with new supplements - our, easily-selected, top choice of the week. I loved seeing John Boorman's Hell in the Pacific on Blu-ray. It has a sole cast of Lee Marvin and Toshiro Mifune - a must-see film experience. Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's marionette-based Thunderbird 6/Thunderbirds Are Go! have interplanetary adventure in the patented Supermarionation process. Pure nostalgia and still so cool offered on, reasonably-priced, Blu-ray by Kino. The Apple is an extravaganza hoot, now on Blu-ray. If you crave a wayward Busby Berkeley-esque glitter-rock epic with wild make-up and crazy costumes - this is for you! The 1974 rendition of Agatha Christie's Ten Little Indians has come to Blu-ray. It sports a cast with Richard Attenborough, Gert Fröbe + Adolfo Celi (yes, two Bond baddies), Herbert Lom, Elke Sommer, Oliver Reed and voice of Orson Welles (as U. N. Owen) - just don't get your hopes too high. Nurse Sherri is a trashy faux-sexploitation horror in the Grindhouse-vein and the Blu-ray commentary adds significant value. In this case, don't judge a Blu-ray by its salacious cover. The 50's 'B' horror The Four Skulls of Jonathan Drake has shrunken heads, desecrated corpses, Voodoo, a mad doctor and unusual occult characters. So, the Blu-ray has some desirability - just don't overpay. The Man in the Glass Booth has the appealing plot of an exposed Nazi war criminal disguised into modern society - and brought to justice. However, the image quality and story left me wanting - pass. On DVD, I reviewed an oft-rewatched psychological thriller starring Patrick Stewart entitled Safe House from 1988. I've certainly got my money's worth and have actually bought it on two occasions. Eric covered Suntan, where, on a hedonistic Greek island, a middle-aged doctor becomes obsessed with a young tourist. Heartland has a young Oklahoma artist, struggling with a recent death, and finding escape in a reckless affair with her brother's girlfriend. Love on a Branch Line is a British comedy TV Mini-Series from 1994.

“If I were ever stranded on a desert island there would be three things I’d need: food, shelter, and a grip.”. - George C. Scott

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

The Bird With the Crystal Plumage BD - This is Dario Argento's directorial debut and with it, he pretty much put giallo movies on the map. That's how potent and influential this movie turned out to be. The premise is nothing special: an American writer in Rome sees a murder attempt but is helpless to try and stop it, and so gets entangled in the investigation to stop the murderer. The premise is not so important as how everything plays out. Blu-ray Release date: June 19th, 2017

Ten Little Indians BD - Eight guests have been invited on various pretenses to a hotel in the middle of the Iranian desert by an unknown host who is absent from dinner (with a centerpiece of ten Indian statuettes). After dinner, a tape-recorded voice (Orson Welles) charges the guests (and the two servants) with crimes that have escaped prosecution. The notion that it is all a joke in bad taste are dispelled when the first guest drops dead of poisoning after admitting his guilt and one of the Indian statues disappear. Searching the hotel results in another death and another missing statue and it becomes apparent that their murderous host is one of the guests. Blu-ray Release date: June 20th, 2017

The Man in the Glass Booth BD - A manic Jewish millionaire (Maximilian Schell), already teetering on the edge of sanity, becomes purely diabolical when he is abducted from his Manhattan penthouse by Israeli agents and put on trial for war crimes committed while serving as colonel in a Nazi concentration camp. Testifying within a sound-proof, bullet-proof glass case, he unleashes a torrent of vitriol upon his accusers, and exposes a secret that is as tragic as it is terrifying. Upon its release, the Los Angeles Times called the film, daring, outrageous, utterly provocative, endlessly ambiguous and strikingly effective. In this new 2K restoration from the original 35mm negative, the film proves itself to be just as powerful today as it was more than forty years ago. Blu-ray Release date: June 6th, 2017

Thunderbird 6/Thunderbirds Are Go! BD - Thunderbirds Are Go (1966) and Thunderbird 6 (1968) are the cinematic evolution of Gerry Anderson’s hugely popular British TV series, Thunderbirds (1965-66): a mix of puppetry (via the patented Supermarionation process, which allowed synchronization of dialogue with marionette movement), sci-fi futurism, action-adventure, and undeniably fabulous Sixties-era design. Both films weave tales of the adventures of the Tracy Family, a father and five sons who, with the assistance of the glamorous British agent Lady Penelope Creighton-Ward, run International Rescue, an elite team who roam the globe—and beyond—in a humanitarian effort to help their fellow men. Kino Blu-ray Release date: June 20th, 2017

Hell in the Pacific BD - The entire cast of Hell in the Pacific consists of two high-powered international stars: Lee Marvin and Toshiro Mifune. The time is World War II. A downed American marine pilot (Marvin), is stalked on a remote Pacific island by a Japanese navy officer (Mifune). The Japanese officer captures the American, but this situation is reversed when he manages to wriggle free. The two enemies finally decide to live and let live, each moving to their own separate portion of the island. By and by the adversaries come to rely upon one another to survive; they set up living quarters in a deserted camp, get drunk together, and almost -- but not quite -- become friends. Blu-ray Release date: June 27th, 2017

Nurse Sherri BD - Meet Sherri...for an evening of pleasure and terror! Young and beautiful nurse Sherri (Jill Jacobson) has been possessed by a crazed preacher who died of a heart attack. Under his demonic control, he uses Sherri to enact revenge against those who he believes were responsible for his death. As Sherri begins to carry out his bloody bidding, two fellow nurses realize that the only way to stop her may be to exorcise the forces of evil out of her in a ghastly and dangerous ritual! Blu-ray Release date: June 27th, 2017

The Apple BD - Unleashed just as the disco phenomenon had peaked and was slipping out of public favor, this one-of-a-kind pop musical is set in 1994, when a Mephistophelean entrepreneur named Mr. Boogalow (Vladek Sheybal) controls the international recording industry through the Worldvision Song Contest. Boogalow's wildly theatrical protégés, a decedent dance-pop group called Bim, seem a sure bet to walk off with the grand prize and worldwide fame, but at the last minute Alphie (George Gilmour) and Bibi (Catherine Mary Stewart), a folk duo from Canada, nearly steal their thunder with their song "Love, the Universal Melody." Blu-ray Release date: June 27th, 2017

The Four Skulls of Jonathan Drake BD - Anthropologist Jonathan Drake (Eduard Franz) believes that the men of his family have been cursed for generations by the native South American tribe he studies. Shortly after his brother, Kenneth (Paul Cavanagh), discovers one of the tribe's shrunken heads in his house, he's found murdered and his head goes missing. In pursuit of the tribesman Zutai (Paul Wexler) and a rival scientist (Henry Daniell) who has become a part of the tribe, Drake attempts to end the curse once and for all. Blu-ray Release date: June 27th, 2017

Suntan - For middle-aged Kostis, life has passed him by. As the newly appointed doctor of a tiny island, Kostis spends a dreary winter alone. By the time summer arrives, though, the island has turned into a thriving, wild vacation spot with nude beaches and crazy parties. When Kostis meets the beautiful and flirty Anna, he falls hard for her and goes out of his way to conquer and impress her. Before long, Kostis is spending nearly all of his time getting drunk, partying hard, and even making out with Anna. What starts as a rediscovery with his lost-long youth, though, slowly turns into an obsession as Kostis is willing to do whatever it takes to keep his Anna. DVD Release Date: June 13th, 2017

Heartland - Heartland tells the story of Lauren, an artist living in suburban Oklahoma, who has moved back home with her mom, Crystal, following the sudden death of her girlfriend. The relentlessly chipper Crystal assumes her daughter is headed back to the straight and narrow, but Lauren is only paying lip service to her mother s plans to stave off the pain of the recent tragedy. When Lauren s brother Justin comes home with his uptight girlfriend Carrie to help launch a local winery, he enlists Lauren and Carrie to help with the marketing concept. Although the two women are quite different, an attraction between them builds as Lauren rediscovers her sense of fun, and Carrie questions her traditional future. Eventually, the two begin a passionate affair that creates havoc when the secret comes out. DVD Release Date: June 6th, 2017

Love on a Branch Line - Based on the John Hadfield best-seller, this quintessentially British comedy follows the trials and tribulations of respectable, if somewhat boring civil servant Jasper Pye. Desperate for a radical change and some excitement in his life, the chance arises when he is sent to dismantle an old government research unit in the country. He soon finds himself seduced by life in the idyllic village and is beguiled by the charms of local eccentric Lord Flamborough and his three beautiful daughters. DVD Release Date: July 17th, 2017

Safe House - Patrick Stewart plays Mace Sowell, a retired government operative who possesses damaging information about a presidential hopeful, and holes himself up inside his secure compound because he fears reprisal. In order to protect himself, Sowell has designed a system whereby the information will be released to the public if he is not there to type in a password at regular intervals. This he believes will keep him from being assassinated, but just in case, he stages elaborate self-defense drills with unwitting servants, and tries to convince his family that the explanation he gave them about his career was a cover story to hide his true military affiliations. The problem is, Sowell is also suffering the early stages of Alzheimer's, so his daughter (Joy Kilpatrick) considers his paranoid stories to be delusional ravings. DVD Release Date: July 18th, 2000
