(aka "The Possession of Nurse Sherri" or "Hospital of Terror" or "Beyond the Living" or "Black Voodoo" or "Killer's Curse" )

directed by Al Adamson
USA 1978

Meet Sherri...for an evening of pleasure and terror! Young and beautiful nurse Sherri (Jill Jacobson) has been possessed by a crazed preacher who died of a heart attack. Under his demonic control, he uses Sherri to enact revenge against those who he believes were responsible for his death. As Sherri begins to carry out his bloody bidding, two fellow nurses realize that the only way to stop her may be to exorcise the forces of evil out of her in a ghastly and dangerous ritual!

Directed by legendary cult filmmaker Al Adamson (DRACULA VS. FRANKENSTEIN), NURSE SHERRI is a violent and sleazy hybrid of 'nurse' films and supernatural horror. Chock full of gloriously ludicrous twists, over the top death scenes, and a smattering of T & A, Vinegar Syndrome proudly presents NURSE SHERRI on Blu-ray for the first time anywhere in the world, freshly restored in 2k off of its original 35mm negative and featuring all new interviews with its stars and iconic producer Sam Sherman.

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Vinegar Syndrome - Region FREE - Blu-rays June 17': Nurse Sherri was originally shot on 16mm. However, when producer Sam Sherman reviewed the first cut, he felt it needed additional edits and re-shoots. All of the subsequent shoots were in 35mm and were edited together with 35mm blow-up elements made from the original 16mm version. Unfortunately, over the years, the original 1mm camera elements were lost and all that survives of these scenes is the 35mm blow-up, which has severely faded. As such, you will notice fluctuations in grain structure as well as overall image quality between these scenes from the original 16mm shoot and the later sections, which were shot on 35mm. The resulting HD image is on a single-layered disc with a high bitrate. While the inconsistencies are noticeable - I wouldn't say it hurt the presentation as you expect these, and greeter, deficiencies with Grindhouse era content. The captures below should give you a good idea and the advancement over the 2007 DVD (Thanks to Eric for providing captures.)

Vinegar Syndrome use a DTS-HD Master 1.0 channel mono track at 1123 kbps - 24-bit, and, although I couldn't find a credit for the score - I liked it!. The quality is, probably, a notch above the video but still suffer from the production limitations. Dialogue is scattered but audible and effects are minimal. The overall sound is flat with the music having a bit of depth. There are optional English subtitles and, the Blu-ray is region FREE.

The Blu-ray includes an audio commentary track with producer Sam Sherman - and I appreciated his frankness about the production - proposed changes in the script, the latter shot sequences, borrowed (rejected) and original 'nurse story' concepts and the work done to bring the film to completion. He also discuses his friendship with Al Adamson. It's quite interesting. There is also the 20-minute "Nurses' Confessions" featurette with, still attractive, co-stars Jill Jacobson and Marliyn Joi reminiscing about Nurse Sherri. There is a short "Then and Now" locations featurette, a promotional still gallery, and two trailers. There is also a second disc DVD with the alternate feature length 'exploitation' version, entitled 'Killer's Curse', which runs - 1:28:57. It is in the 1.78:1 aspect ratio - is transferred at 5.14 mbps and has the same extras included. We've added one comparison capture below. The package has reversible cover artwork.

I found myself warming to Nurse Sherri - especially after the commentary. It will probably disappoint those keen on the sexploitation aspects (although nudity etc,. exist - it's minimal.) It's very grassroots but I found myself interested in the production as well as the story. No question we're talking a less-effectual horror/soft-core - combining both but stronger with the horror features. You can probably guess what this is all about but this is one I kinda liked more than most of this sub-genre. Vinegar Syndrome go the extra mile and it's a neat package. Very collectable. Certainly recommended to the appropriate crowd.
