Directed by Henry Hathaway
USA 1971

From Henry Hathaway, the acclaimed director of The Shepherd of the Hills, Rawhide, The Sons of Katie Elder, Nevada Smith and True Grit, comes this western odyssey about an aging gunfighter (Gregory Peck, The Big Country, Billy Two Hats) who’s released from jail and looking for revenge. Clay Lomax (Peck) did seven years in Canyon City Jail after his partner, Sam Foley (James Gregory, Clambake), shot him in the back during a bank robbery. The ex-con is suddenly saddled with Decky Ortega (Dawn Lyn, Walking Tall), a six-year-old orphan whose mother was his old girlfriend. With no one else to care for the feisty little girl, Clay is forced to take her on the trail of ruthless vengeance that leads to the climactic shoot-out. The stellar cast includes Patricia Quinn (Zachariah), Robert F. Lyons (Platoon Leader), Susan Tyrrell (Flesh+Blood), Jeff Corey (Jennifer), Rita Gam (Night People), Paul Fix (Man in the Shadow) and Arthur Hunnicutt (Broken Arrow).

Clay Lomax, a bank robber, gets out of jail after an 7 year sentence. He is looking after Sam Foley, the man who betrayed him. Knowing that, Foley hires three men to pay attention of Clay's steps. The things get complicated when Lomax, waiting to receive some money from his ex-lover, gets only the notice of her death and an 7 year old girl, sometimes very annoying, presumed to be his daughter.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (February 2021): Kino have transferred Henry Hathaway's Shoot Out to Blu-ray. The 1080P image quality is very impressive with bright vibrant colors. There are a few sequences which suffer from what looks like misalignment (see last capture.) Black levels are rich and deep and contrast is likewise solid. For the vast majority of the HD presentation I was highly impressed. This looked fabulous on my system.

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a DTS-HD Master dual-mono track (16-bit) in the original English language. More western-related effects and some latter aggression with added depth. The score is by Dave Grusin (The Midnight Man, The Friends of Eddie Coyle, ...And Justice For All, 3 Days of the Condor, The Front) Candy, sounding a bit deeper with more consistent dialogue. Kino offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A'-locked Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offers a new commentary by Nick Pinkerton. The guy, if nothing else, is incredibly well-prepared. Wow. He talks a lot on Henry Hathaway, frames within frames composition, extensive resumes of every actor in the film, capturing the success of True Grit, he identifies Hathaway's first filmed 'nude' scene (Rita Gam - The Thief, Nicholas Ray's King of Kings etc.... not the director himself) and the story behind it, adaptation to the screen by Marguerite Roberts from the novel The Lone Cowboy by Will James. It's an endless stream of detail... he barely takes a breath. You'd need to listen to it 5 times to get everything. My only rub is his lack of enthusiasm. While he can sound a shade blasé, reading his 'script', his input is extensive and appreciated. One of the better commentarists. There is also a trailer for the film.

Henry Hathaway's Shoot Out is an old guy taking on the greenhorn new breed; "Just do your little chore, punk.". Gregory Peck still knows how to handle a gun (21-years after The Gunfighter.) The cloying parts with Dawn Lyn (Devil Times Five) are still worth 'the ride'.  I enjoyed the Kino Blu-ray and extensive Pinkerton commentary. Western genre, and Gregory Peck, fans are encouraged to indulge.
