Directed by Nathan Juran
USA 1973
Richie Bridgestone’s parents are getting a divorce, but that’s the least of his
problems at the moment. While on a visit to his father's secluded cabin, Richie
witnesses his dad being attacked by a werewolf. Much like the tale of the boy
who cried wolf, no one in the town will believe Richie's claims that his father
will change into a werewolf at the next full moon. *** The Boy Who Cried Werewolf is a 1973 Technicolor horror film directed by Nathan H. Juran. The film stars Kerwin Mathews in the final film he and Juran made after their earlier work, which included The 7th Voyage of Sinbad. In this thriller, a boy visits his father in a secluded cabin; the father is attacked by a werewolf and then becomes one himself. The boy constantly tries to tell others, but no one will believe him. Juran came out of retirement to make the film as a favour to producer Aaron Rosenberg. |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc. ADDITION: Shout! Factory Blu-ray (January 2021): Shout! Factory transferred Nathan Juran's The Boy Who Cried Werewolf to Blu-ray. It is on a single-layered disc with a supportive bitrate. It looks okay - deep colors, depth and a smattering of texture. No noise in the few dark scenes. The 1080P transfer is not the problem here. NOTE: We have added 40 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE On their Blu-ray, Shout! Factory use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (24-bit) in the original English language. Effects don't carry extensive weight and there is a score by Ted Stovall - his only film credit. Even a Bernard Herrmann score couldn't elevate this from its 'underwhelming' status. Shout! Factory offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray. The Shout! Factory Blu-ray offers only a theatrical trailer and stills gallery as supplements. No commentary or interviews. The Boy Who Cried Werewolf has a great title and I was keen to see the re-pairing of Nathan Juran and Kerwin Mathews since The 7th Voyage of Sinbad has always been a childhood favorite. Sinbad is older now and a little paunchier, the story isn't fatally poor - but key elements required fleshing-out; notably the psychiatrist and evolution story of the first werewolf - also the Jesus angle was awkward and unnecessary. The werewolf make-up is so elaborate that it's almost hokey. I'm glad I finally saw The Boy Who Cried Werewolf as I don't recall it being available on broadcast TV nor it ever being on DVD. The bare-bones Shout! Factory Blu-ray is priced a shade high. This is worth about $12-$15 USD, imo, if you can find it as a bargain. Curious fans may wish to pay more. The title brings expectations but not enough homage. It's really quite average, vacillating between a family film and a more serious genre effort. |
