(aka "¡Tintorera!" or "Tintorera... Tiger Shark" or "Tintorera: Killer Shark")

Directed by René Cardona Jr.
Mexico 1977

From cult filmmaker René Cardona Jr. (Survive!, Guyana-Cult of the Damned, Treasure of the Amazon), enter the world of a trio of beautiful young people, the hot sexy beaches of Mexico... and a giant, hungry Tiger Shark known as Tintorera! When two handsome shark hunters, Steven (Hugo Stiglitz; Nightmare City, Survive!, Counterforce), Miguel (Andrés Garcia; Day of the Assassin, The Bermuda Triangle) hook up with Gabriella (Susan George; Straw Dogs, Fright, The House Where Evil Dwells), everything seems to be paradise until Tintorera strikes, eating the beachgoers and endangering the lives of the trio. One of the hunters decides to avenge his friend and take on the Tintorera one on one, and it becomes a brutal battle between man and beast. Co-starring Fiona Lewis (The Fury, A Day at the Beach, Strange Invaders), Jennifer Ashley (The Pom Pom Girls, Terror Circus, Guyana-Cult of the Damned) and Priscilla Barnes (TV’s Three’s Company, Texas Detour, Seniors). Now watch this exciting shark attack thriller in HD!

***

Steven (Hugo Stiglitz} a U.S.-born Mexican businessman, arrives in a Mexican resort village on a yacht anchored off shore. One of the local fishermen and the caretaker of the yacht, Colorado (Roberto Guzmán) takes Steven with him when he goes to haul in the sharks he's caught - and he's annoyed to find that another shark has taken a huge bite out of one of them.

Steven then sets his sights on Patricia (Fiona Lewis), an Englishwoman on vacation. They have a whirlwind romance but break up when Steven can't decide if he's in love with her. Steven is extremely jealous, however, when she begins a relationship with Miguel (Andrés García) a womanising swimming instructor at the nearby resort hotel. While Steven stews on the yacht, Patricia and Miguel have sex. Then she goes skinny-dipping in the ocean and is eaten by a large, apparently emphysemic,19-foot-long (5.8 m) tiger shark.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (December 2020): Kino have transferred René Cardona Jr.'s Tintorera: Killer Shark to Blu-ray. With multiple versions existing (reportedly two English DUBs), the quality - although pleasing enough in much of the film - has inconsistencies. This is probably part of the production with the underwater sequences being less-professional and some of the Spanish language parts (mostly in the beginning) showing colors flecks or vertical marks. It's on a single-layered disc with a high bitrate and no digitization. It's very watch-able with tight detail in the many close-ups and some beautiful shots of the ocean around Cancún, Mexico.

NOTE: We have added 58 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (24-bit) in the English DUB with some Spanish language. There isn't much effects wide relying on the score by Basil Poledouris (Summer Lovers, Cherry 2000, RoboCop, The Hunt for Red October, Conan the Barbarian.) There is 70's pop/dance music performed by the Chanter Sisters; Danny Disco, Talkin' Too Much About My Baby, It's Too Late Now, When You're Coming Home etc.. Kino offer optional English subtitles (with burned-in for the brief Spanish - see samples) on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offers a new commentary by by Film Historians Troy Howarth and Rod Barnett. Howarth calls it "Penthouse Presents Jaws", they discuss cross-overs to Euro-cult cinema, Hugo Stiglitz; (Nightmare City), a Jacques Cousteau link, the obvious 'Jaws' rip-offery, multiple edited versions, Susan George, Fiona Lewis, Jennifer Ashley, Priscilla Barnes, Playmate Laura Lyons etc. Barnett sees a tenuous link to maturity/immaturity of vacation dalliances and I agree with him about potentially damaged character's back-stories that aren't broached in this version. Interesting and at their usual excellent commentarist level. The package has a trailer, limited edition slipcase and reversible artwork.

René Cardona Jr.'s Tintorera: Killer Shark is mostly what you expect; exploitation nudity - a fair amount - with the shark attacks coming in less-prominently. Susan George fans may appreciate her 1/2 hour's worth onscreen - 27-years old at the time. There is some graphic shark attacks - bloody and sudden - that are shocking.  Cheesy? of course but the commentary included on the Kino Blu-ray makes the viewing experience all the more interesting. There is some nostalgia appeal here as well. It may be a little better than you might anticipate for a sexy summer-tease / nature-strikes-back 70's shark thriller.
