Directed by Don Chaffey
UK 1958

Richard Attenborough gives a compelling performance in this gripping psychological drama as a hysteric approaching the limits of his sanity! Also featuring Donald Houston, Kenneth Griffith, Bernard Lee and Alfred Burke, The Man Upstairs is featured here as a brand-new High Definition transfer from original film elements in its as-exhibited aspect ratio.

Insomniac Peter Watson lives in a state of perpetual crisis. Lodging in a run-down boarding house and becoming ever more unpredictable, he is tormented by guilt over his part in an accident that claimed the life of his fiancée's brother. When he hits out at another tenant the police get involved, and Watson finds himself trapped in an escalating drama in which the actions of those around him may help him... or harm him.

***

Peter Watson, a tenant of a boarding house, is troubled with pain and an inability to sleep. He repeatedly tries unsuccessfully to light the gas-fire that requires coins and seeks help from another lodger, artist Nicholas, who is spending the night with his model, and is reluctant to be disturbed. Another neighbour, Pollen, calls for police help. The other occupants in the property are awake by this time, and one of them, Mrs Barnes, tries to help the mentally confused Watson (known to them as John Wilson) but he also refuses her help.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Network Blu-ray (January 2021): Network have transferred Don Chaffey's The Man Upstairs to Blu-ray. It is cited as being from a "brand-new High Definition transfer from original film elements in its as-exhibited aspect ratio". It looks competent in 1080P - the source has a few surface scratches. There is some grain texture - layered contrast - and pleasing detail with infrequent depth in the 1.66:1 frame. It looks consistent - a fine single-layered HD presentation without egregious flaws.

NOTE: We have added 76 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, Network use a linear PCM mono track (16-bit) in the original English language. There are no aggressive effects nor a credited score although there is some music; J.S. Zamecnik's Beast of the Jungle. The track is likewise clean and consistent. Network offer optional English subtitles (see sample below) on their Region 'B' Blu-ray.

The Network Blu-ray offers only a Stills Gallery as an extra - and there are two PDF files in the root of the disc on the synopsis.

Sometimes a film perfectly sates your entertainment appetite. The Man Upstairs did this for me last evening. I loved my viewing - very much. Don Chaffey (One Million Years B.C., Danger Within, Jason and the Argonauts) realizes this character study exceptionally well - kudos to Attenborough and the supporting cast - Bernard Lee ('M'), Dorothy Alison etc. and you will notice Edward Judd (The Day the Earth Caught Fire, First Men in the Moon) as one of the policeman. But I loved the interplay of the neighbors as well. Just a perfect and surprisingly strong film experience. Not a full British Noir - but not far off. The Network Blu-ray gets a big endorsement from me. I hope you enjoy The Man Upstairs as much as I did.
