Directed by Cornel Wilde
USA 1967

Young marines on a WWII tour of duty learn that “war is hell” in this graphic, unflinching and honest drama of men in combat. Starring Cornel Wilde (The Big Combo, Road House) and Rip Torn (Cross Creek, Time Limit), Beach Red marked a real breakthrough in American war picture production by taking pains to show the terror on both sides. After a gory battle to take the beach on a Japanese-held island in the Pacific, Captain MacDonald (Wilde) asks Sergeant Honeywell (Torn) to lead a squad on a perilous journey deep into the jungle to find the enemy’s stronghold. The scouts soon learn that the Japanese are preparing to strike back hard and fast. In the hours to come, whose blood will soak the sand red? Co-written, produced and directed by star Cornel Wilde (Storm Fear, The Naked Prey, No Blade of Grass).

***

American troops storm ashore on a Japanese-held island and push inland while their enemies plan a counterattack in this look at warfare. Soldiers on both sides are haunted by memories of home and the horrifying, sickening images they find in combat.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (January 2021): Kino have transferred Cornel Wilde's Beach Red to Blu-ray. It is on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate. The image is reflective of the production - gritty with some solid colors (jungle). Flash tones are warm, there is depth and the overall HD presentation is a positive one - consistent and pleasing.

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a DTS-HD Master dual-mono track (26-bit) in the original English language. It sports a 'Title Song' sung by Jean Wallace and written by Cornel Wilde (as Elbey Vid) indicative of a late 60's production. The audio is fairly unremarkable in the lossless with battle effects carrying modest weight. Kino offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offers only a trailer - no commentary on this one - which it deserves as a complexly layered and interesting film, imo.

Cornel Wilde's Beach Red is a very different war film. It gets deep into the psychology of the soldiers - their fears, pining for lovers, morality... Like Peter Bowman's novel it is described as "uniquely constructed". Refreshing. The Kino Blu-ray. is a rare bare-bones effort from them, but this is a film that deserves examination, I believe. Recommended!
