Directed by Douglas Sirk
USA 1955
Douglas Sirk is best known for his highly stylized Technicolor melodramas, but he also did superlative work in restrained black and white. There's Always Tomorrow is a virtuoso study in tones, ranging from the blinding sunlight of a desert resort to the expressionist shadows of the suburban home where Fred MacMurray lives in unhappy union with Joan Bennett. Barbara Stanwyck is the old flame who turns up by accident, rekindling for MacMurray the dangerous illusion that happiness is still possible. Excerpt from Dave Kehr of the Chicago Reader ***
Between his twin masterpieces
All That Heaven Allows and
Written on the Wind, Douglas Sirk created this razor-sharp study of male
crisis, both a glittering testament to love’s labours lost and his most
unforgiving vision of suburban conformity. |

On their
Blu-ray,
Kino also use a DTS-HD Master
2.0 channel (16-bit) in the original English. I couldn't detect much of
a difference with the Elephant Films audio transfer. The score is
credited to
Herman Stein (This
Island Earth,
Female
on the Beach,
The Land Unknown,
It Came From Outer Space,
War Arrow,
Tarantula,
The Incredible Shrinking Man) and
Heinz Roemheld (Dangerous,
The
Monster that Challenged The World, The
Land Unknown,
The Mole People, 1933's
The Invisible Man). It also improves
over the DVDs with more resonance and depth - adding emotion to the viewing
experience. Kino offer optional English
(SDH)
subtitles on their Region 'A'
Blu-ray.
The Kino
Blu-ray
has a new commentary by Samm Deighan who just keeps getting better in my
opinion. Samm's preparation and deeper look at the film as a tragedy
focusing uniquely on a male character in the melodrama genre. She makes
some very valid and astute points seeing beneath the surface about Sirk's subtle intentions including the restraints of marriage, how the
children are unfairly dismissive, almost cruel to their father and how
the story builds sympathy for Clifford Groves (MacMurray) with an
unrequited affair and lack of emotional support, by his own family, for
his work successes and responsibilities. He is lonely. She talks about
one of my favorites -
Joan Bennett - and her portrait of a self-possessed, self-serving wife
doting on the children but oblivious to her husband and his potential
affair with Stanwyck. I really enjoyed listening and learned a lot about
the film seeing another side to it. There is also a trailer for
There's Always Tomorrow
and other Sirk and/or Stanwyck trailers.
A huge treat to, again, watch this,
unjustly neglected Sirk film
that improves with repeat viewings. There is so much to examine even
beyond the melodrama triangle, mid-life crisis and male-female dynamic
for with both adults and adolescents. I loved the 50's household -
furniture and fashions (check out Stanwyck's black + white diamond
vest). With the Samm Deighan
commentary the Kino Blu-ray
and its superior video image get the nod as the definitive digital
releases of this wonderfully deep film. Our highest recommendation! |
