Directed by Sidney J. Furie
UK 1961

A Monster created from the depths!

After being dismissed from medical school because of his devious experiments, Doctor Peter Blood returns home to join his father’s practice. He still believes he can create the perfect human, so he continues his experiments in an abandoned mine where he attempts to revive a rotting corpse. But Dr. Blood needs a living "donor", to create his "perfect human", and soon people start to disappear from the nearby village. This shocker stars Kieron Moore (The Day Of The Triffids) and Hazel Court (The Curse Of Frankenstein, The Masque Of The Red Death) and was directed by Sidney J. Furie (The Entity, The Ipcress File).

***

After being thrown out of medical school for ethical violations, Dr. Peter Blood returns home to a small Cornish village, where he sets up a research laboratory in a secluded cave. There, he attempts to revive the dead, using kidnapped humans -- who he views as unworthy of life -- for their body parts, specifically, their hearts.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Shout! Factory Blu-ray (October 2020): Shout! Factory have transferred Sidney J. Furie's Doctor Blood's Coffin to Blu-ray. It looks modest - more a function of the original production. There is a nice, consistent thickness of to the visuals. Colors shows some depth and richness. There is solid contrast. Overall, it seems like a strong replication of theatrical - easily advancing upon SD.

NOTE: The camera operator on Doctor Blood's Coffin is a fellow named Nicolas Roeg (cinephiles know well as director of Don't Look Now, Walkabout, The Man Who Fell to Earth etc.), although DoP is credited to Stephen Dade (Zulu).

NOTE: We have added 40 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, Shout! Factory use a DTS-HD Master dual-mono track (24-bit) in the original English language. There are a few scare-related effects but an atmospheric score by (Suddenly, Last Summer, Fiend Without a Face) adding some tension and suspense. Shout! Factory offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Shout! Factory Blu-ray offers only a stills gallery and a trailer.

Sidney J. Furie's Doctor Blood's Coffin is not top-shelf sci-fi horror but I always enjoy this genre from the 50's and 60's - especially the UK variety. It's not Hammer but something I could throw on every few years and enjoy in a Sunday afternoon, home theater, matinee. Shout! Factory Blu-ray is only recommended to those who share this appreciation.
