Directed by Robert Young
UK 1976

A classic Seventies "sex comedy", this bawdy British period romp lampoons classic television series Upstairs Downstairs and sees a host of stars shedding their Edwardian costumes to save the family silver including Diana Dors, sex superstar Mary Millington, Willie Rushton, Françoise Pascal, Aimi MacDonald and erstwhile Artful Dodger, Jack Wild! Keep It Up Downstairs is featured here as a brand-new High Definition transfer from original film elements in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio.

1904. Cockshute Towers, one of England's stateliest homes, is threatened with bankruptcy. Both masters and servants are enjoying dalliances of one kind or another amongst themselves and none have any desire to give up their rewarding way of life! Can they work together to keep the stately pile solvent?

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Network Blu-ray (September 2020): Network have transferred Robert Young's silly Brit sex-comedy Keep It Up Downstairs to Blu-ray. It is cited as being a "brand-new High Definition transfer from original film elements in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio." Network provide both a 1.66:1 transfer of the film and a 1.33:1 (open-matte) version - both in 1080P. They look a little different with the 1.33:1 appears a bit softer but having richer colors. The composition supports the widescreen and the image has inconsistencies with, what looks like, very soft lenses utilized often. There is quite a bit of texture (grain) and the HD presentations look pretty tame - not dynamic in any sense but clear and without damage.

On their Blu-ray, Network use linear PCM 2.0 channel tracks (16-bit) for both films in the original English language. Surprisingly the score is by very notable Michael Nyman (Man with a Movie Camera, The Piano, Gattaca, Peter Greenaway's A Zed & Two Noughts etc.) and there are a few remarkable sequences if, no where near, the composer's best work. Network offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'B' Blu-ray.

Aside from the 1.33:1 version, the Network Blu-ray offers only a trailer and image gallery.

Keep It Up Downstairs is filled with sexual innuendo, some cheesecake nudity and a reasonably ridiculous semblance of a plot.  Robert Young (who directed a lot of TV production including an episode of Hammer House of Horror) helms this un-savable mess. The arrival of Diana Dors (Passport to Shame) adds a significant layer of pitifulness, imo. Some of the film was cute, good costumes, and is even amusingly erotic. I liked Sue Longhurst who played a schoolgirl in Hammer's Lust for a Vampire, Seretta Wilson (Tower of Evil.) and Françoise Pascal (The Iron Rose) as Mimi the French maid of... easy virtue. There is some advertising cache of having 'blue' movie star Mary Millington although I don't recall seeing her in Keep It Up Downstairs. I suspect the erotic 'come on' for many will result in disappointment. The Network release does their usual pragmatic job although it's probably not a film that deserved a Blu-ray in the first place. Recommended only to those who have some nostalgia over this title. That's all.
