Directed by Paul Bartel
USA 1984
From cult filmmaker Paul Bartel, the director of Private Parts, Death Race 2000, Cannonball, Eating Raoul, Lust in the Dust and Scenes from the Class Struggle in Beverly Hills, comes this hilarious comedy starring Nancy Allen (Blow Out, RoboCop) and David Naughton (An American Werewolf in London, Midnight Madness). Tabloid reporter Lois Thornedyke (Allen) and her photographer Barry Denver (Naughton) stumble upon evidence of a sex scandal, blackmail and political conspiracy that may involve her lover Franklyn (Laurence Luckinbill, The Boys in the Band), the saintly Mayor of New York City. She attempts to use the exposé as leverage to up her journalistic career in this classic 1980s sex comedy that co-stars Alan Rosenberg (The Wanderers) and Paul Bartel as a TV director. *** If the Perils of Pauline were set in a campy New York City with a dash of trash added in, Not for Publication would result, though the awful jokes and kinky characters are not going to be entertaining to everyone. Lois (Nancy Allen) is a reporter at a sleazoid newspaper, a paragon of yellow journalism that she is determined to turn back to its first incarnation as The New York Enforcer, a better paper. The not-so-good Mayor Franklyn (Laurence Luckinbill) adopts Lois as his personal assistant when she bursts into his office one day and strongly advises him to cut the pressure to shut down porn shops or he will lose the vote of New York's youth. She hires a photographer (David Naughton) to work in the mayor's office, planning to use his skills for her tabloid paper -- but then a quirky menage à trois arises between the mayor, the photographer, and Lois. After some undercover sleuthing in Long Island, Lois connects the mayor to various robberies that have occurred in the city and thinks of a way to bring back the New York Enforcer and handle the mayor at the same time. NOTE:
The below
Blu-ray
captures were taken directly from the
Blu-ray
disc.
On their
Blu-ray,
Kino use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (16-bit) in the original
English language. There are very few aggressive effects. It has a score by
John Meyer (his only theatrical composure credit), with the numbers
You're Getting to be a Habit With Me and You Bring Out the Beast
in Me. Kino offer optional English
subtitles on their Region 'A'
Blu-ray.
I enjoyed the Kino
Blu-ray
new audio commentary by filmmaker Allan Arkush and filmmaker / historian
Daniel Kremer. These guys compliment each other very well knowing many
details of what might be known as a 'Paul Bartel genre'. There are
discussions of Roger Corman, Joe Dante and a funny story about David
Carradine and much more highlighting Bartel's work. It revealed a whole
other side to this director and fun genre that I was not very educated
on. I will see him and his films in new light. Great job. There is also
a theatrical trailer for the film in SD.
Paul Bartel's Not For Publication
is pretty weak cinema - mostly a throw away - but the commentary did
greatly enhance my appreciation of the director, his intentions and his
work. I've always appreciated both Nancy Allen and David Naughton. Those
who might appreciate this would be a small group. I assume there is some
nostalgic value and I give extensive value to the commentary on the Kino Blu-ray.
