Directed by John Turturro
USA 2019

The Jesus rolls on. Hours after being released from prison, Jesus Quintana (John Turturro) pairs up with fellow misfits Petey (Bobby Cannavale) and Marie (Audrey Tautou), embarking on a freewheeling joyride of petty crime and romance.

***

Believe it or not, “The Big Lebowski” isn’t the biggest influence on “The Jesus Rolls,” the long-delayed spin-off film that features John Turturro in the role of Jesus Quintana from that Coen brothers hit. In a truly unexpected decision, Turturro, who also wrote and directed the movie, chose to use Bertrand Blier’s 1974 film “Going Places” as his major influence, so much so that Blier's script gets a credit (and it was originally called "Going Places" before Screen Media renamed it).

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Screen Media Blu-ray (April 2020): Screen Media have transferred John Turturro's The Jesus Rolls to Blu-ray. It is on a single-layered disc with a supportive bitrate - and the image quality is pretty much up to expectations for a modern film. Colors have some richness, detail has a few strong moments in close-ups and the visuals look strong in-motion. No complaints.

On their Blu-ray, Screen Media give the option of DTS-HD Master 5.1 surround track or a linear PCM 2.0 channel stereo track (both 24-bit) in the original English language. There are plenty of effects - many aggressive with modest separations. The score is credited to Émilie Simon, but most will note the connection utilizing a couple of Gipsy Kings songs (and a cameo by two of them singing and playing guitar in prison). The audio is very good - no issues - clean and consistent. Screen Media offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Screen Media Blu-ray offers no supplements. I missed the commentary by Tuturro and Cannavale. Just sampled it - sounds well worth the indulgence!

There are a lot of recognizable faces in John Turturro's The Jesus Rolls - Audrey Tautou, Susan Sarandon, Jon Hamm, J.B. Smoove, Christopher Walken, Michael Badalucco, Sônia Braga and others - plus, what Big Lebowski fans want - references to the 1998 film and the character of Jesus Quintana and his minor contribution to that masterpiece. Trouble is - that while I think I may see what Turturro was going for here - it doesn't come across well. I liked his 2013 directorial/writing/starring effort of Fading Gigolo. But The Jesus Rolls is very disconnected - unexplained sequences (chased by farmers?) although I did appreciate the themes of dissatisfied characters - essentially seeking love - some find it (Audrey Tautou with an orgasm) and some don't; Susan Sarandon's "Jean". It feels like too much was left on the cutting room floor and the title was simply a marketing grab for Lebowski fans. Meh. It held my attention but is generally underwhelming - where you feel it had solid potential.

The Screen Media Blu-ray is reasonably priced and the Lebowski enticement alone may be enough for a purchase. My advice would be to keep your expectations grounded and you may have some fun.
