Directed by George Bloomfield
USA 1970

Jenny (Marlo Thomas, TV’s That Girl and Friends) is unmarried, pregnant and alone in New York City. Delano (Alan Alda, Sweet Liberty, TV’s M*A*S*H) is a young filmmaker trying to avoid the Vietnam War draft. A chance meeting in Central Park leads to their friendship and mutual concern for each other, and they soon agree that the perfect solution to their problems is a “marriage of convenience.” Jenny will have a father for her baby and Delano will escape the draft. But the plan goes awry when Jenny begins to fall in love with her new husband, who’s in a relationship with someone else. Film and television veteran George Bloomfield (To Kill a Clown, Nothing Personal) directed this touching romantic drama co-starring Elizabeth Wilson (The Day of the Dolphin) and Vincent Gardenia (Lucky Luciano) as Jenny’s parents, with Charlotte Rae (TV’s The Facts of Life) and Estelle Winwood (The Producers).

***

An unwed mother-to-be marries a total stranger avoiding the draft. She now has a father for her child and he doesn't have to go to the Army. But this marriage-of-convenience leads to a romance between the two.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (April 2020): Kino have transferred the lesser-seen 70's romance Jenny to Blu-ray. It is cited as being from a "Brand New 4K Master!" It looks consistent, clean and the 1080P seems to identify the frequent softer lens used on Marlo Thomas. It is in the original 1.85:1 aspect ratio, is housed on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate. Some colors are exported with depth (Alda's green sweater) and the HD presentation is very strong in-motion. I doubt this film will look any better on digital.

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (16-bit) in the original English language. The lossless isn't tested much with no aggressive sequences. The delightful score is by Michael Small (Klute, The Drowning Pool, Black Widow, Child's Play, Night Moves, The Driver, The Star Chamber) and advances the film presentation's subtle romantic moments. Kino offer optional English subtitles (see sample below) on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offers a new audio commentary by film historians Lee Gambin and Jarret Gahan who are enthusiastic loving the Jenny character as a film lover as they identify the movies played during the feature. They reference many layers deep into the careers of Marlo Thomas, Alan Alda, director George Bloomfield (his work on Fraggle Rock) and much more. It is filled with details and their film-love show through. Jarret Gahan is also Australian and a fairly prolific TV producer who is the expert in locations of scenes (caught his couple of 'F-bomb'). Together they do a solid, entertaining, job. There are also some trailers, but none for the film.

Well, I quite liked Jenny especially the nonlinear, episodic approach to the narrative. We learn details slowly as the romance blossoms. They are imperfect people but fit each other and the result is a very human story of love, career, having a child, innocence etc. The Kino Blu-ray offers a lesser-seen, unique, imperceptible, romance film with two desirable actors and a revealing commentary that will further appreciation. Recommended!
