THIS WEEK'S REVIEWS: Scorsese's
World Cinema Project No. 4 probably gets my highest rating
this week, but I kinda got a kick out of Vinegar Syndrome's 4K
Cloak & Dagger and the schlocky pair of Birds II and
The Incredible Melting Man (in 4K). While I adore When Worlds
Collide - Paramount dropped the ball bigly. I liked Sound of
Metal and The Chocolate War while the harsh Natural
Enemies has solid performances, a fab commentary and director
participation... it will make you think.
Enjoy,
Gary

OUR REVIEW
COMMENTS: Rick Rosenthal's The Birds II: Land's End is a standalone
sequel to Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 film The Birds, that was set in
Bodega Bay, California. The plot is similar to the original and
Tippi Hedren has a minor role as a different character from the 63'
film. Director Rosenthal had himself credited by the pseudonym 'Alan
Smithee' - an indication he wanted to disown The Birds II. I seem to
recall it being out on LaserDisc back in the day. It's not as
'horrible' as reviews often describe, but, of course, it has little
cinematic value compared to the original - despite the name, Tippi
and the plot. I admit, I was still keen to see it as an animal
attack feature, regardless of the poor reputation. Some may be keen
because of Tippi's participation and its plot similarities although
it lacks 'kitsch' or 'camp' desirability. Vinegar Syndrome do
fabulous Blu-rays although often lost of forgotten films like this
one. This includes a commentary and solid extras and the case has
attractive artwork. If you enter with low expectations you may enjoy
The Birds II: Land's End's positives more than you anticipate. Just,
obviously, don't expect, or even compare it to, the original.

OUR REVIEW
COMMENTS: Sidney Poitier's Buck and the Preacher has welcome moments
of humor (Belafonte’s performance) along with some gravely serious
topics. "This film broke Hollywood Western traditions by casting
black actors as central characters and portraying both tension and
solidarity between African Americans and Native Americans in the
late 19th century." (h/t Wikipedia) Buck and the Preacher was shot
in only 45-days and Poitier edited the film during the shooting of
The Organization, the actor's third (and final) appearance as Lt
Virgil Tibbs. Civil rights themes can be seen throughout Buck and
the Preacher with frequent allegorical parallels drawn between the
film's storyline and the important doctrine of the 60's Civil Rights
Movement - as well as sharing portrayals in Blaxploitation films in
regards to its depiction of white people - although Buck is a
significantly different protagonist hero as found in, ex. Shaft or
Coffy. The Criterion Blu-ray has impressive a/v and some important
extras. Buck and the Preacher also has a lot of western genre
appeal. Absolutely recommended.

OUR REVIEW
COMMENTS: The Chocolate War was actor Keith Gordon's directorial
debut and is based on the Robert Cormier novel of the same name. The
film focuses on a secret society of students in a strict Roman
Catholic boarding school. An alliance forms with cruel Brother Leon
(John Glover of Jonathan Demme's Last Embrace among over 130
credits) to facilitate selling chocolates for a fundraiser. One
student, Jerry Renault (Ilan Mitchell-Smith), refuses to participate
and the intimidation and bullying starts or rather exacerbates -
including a concluding boxing match with a slow-motion sequence
right out of Scorsese's Raging Bull. So it carries themes of
defiance, personal freedom and adolescent rebellion while diverging
from the book for a more uplifting, Hollywood-esque, conclusion.
It's really a very good film if a loser at the box office. The MVD
Rewind Blu-ray is an expansion from the older DVD - in the higher
resolution while repeating the valuable director commentary and
extensive interview. If you haven't seen The Chocolate War - it is
worth your time.

OUR REVIEW
COMMENTS: Richard Franklin's Cloak & Dagger is 80's, father and son,
nostalgia gold. It is a spy adventure based on a Cornell Woolrich
short story, "The Boy Cried Murder". It had previously been filmed
as Ted Tetzlaff's 1949 The Window with Bobby Driscoll in Henry
Thomas' more modern role and in 1970's Sudden Terror with Mark
Lester. Davey's world exists between the fiction of his Atari video
game and imaginary representation of his father as heroic 'Jack
Flack' and the stark reality of spies and stolen military secrets
that he has stumbled into. Franklin has more echoes of Hitchcock -
which is common for him. Cloak & Dagger is quite fun and memorable
and Vinegar Syndrome's 4K UHD release offers plenty with superb a/v,
a commentary and more supplements. Absolutely recommended.

OUR REVIEW
COMMENTS: Doris Wishman's films here in this package have aspects of
BDSM, fetishism, assault, abuse, alcoholism, objectification, stolen
innocence etc. and we can see the same actors, same sets
(occasionally Doris Wishman's apartment), heavy eye-make-up and
bulky lingerie throughout. They are easily categorized as
sexploitation and soft-to-harder pornography of which Wishman is
considered to be a pioneer. Antiobscenity laws prohibited the
showing of many of her films for decades. So AGFA's The Films of
Doris Wishman: The Moonlight Years triple Blu-ray set is a
continuation of the first package; The Films of Doris Wishman: The
Twilight Years on Blu-ray although these are earlier films - where
she is often credit as "Louis Silverman". I imagine these being
popular at bachelor stags at some point and they retain historical
significance as a kind of genre time-capsule. They can engender a
kitschy-ness and the set is recommended to a minute niche - who,
like The Twilight Years set, probably already know who they are. I
can't imagine anyone doing a more complete set - and these do have
the commentaries as worthwhile supplements.

COMMENTS: Considered the magnum opus of the five decades-long career
of Tomu Uchida (Bloody Spear at Mount Fuji, The Mad Fox), the epic
crime drama A Fugitive from the Past was voted third in the
prestigious Kinema Junpo magazine’s 1999 poll of the Top Japanese
Films of the 20th Century. In 1947, a freak typhoon sends a
passenger ferry running between Hokkaido and mainland Japan plunging
to the ocean depths, with hundreds of lives lost. During the chaos,
three men are witnessed fleeing a burning pawnshop in the Hokkaido
port town of Iwanai. The police suspect theft and arson, and when
Detective Yumisaka (Junzaburo Ban) discovers the burned remains of a
boat and the corpses of two men, he sets about tracking the shadowy
third figure. Meanwhile, the mysterious Takichi Inukai (Rentaro
Mikuni) takes shelter with a prostitute, Yae (Sachiko Hidari), a
brief encounter that will come to define both of their lives. A
decade later, long after the trail has gone cold, Yumisaka is called
back by his successor Detective Ajimura (Ken Takakura) as two new
dead bodies are found. Making its home video debut outside of Japan,
this adaptation of Tsutomu Minakami’s 1700-page novel is a landmark
in master director Uchida’s oeuvre. Its gritty monochrome
photography has the immediacy of newsreel as Uchida uses the
landscapes of postwar Japan to explore the massive social upheaval
and unspoken legacies of the war, and create an unsettling karmic
allegory of a man’s struggle to escape his past sins.

COMMENTS: In his controversial masterpiece The Great Dictator,
Charlie Chaplin offers both a cutting caricature of Adolf Hitler and
a sly tweaking of his own comic persona. Chaplin, in his first pure
talkie, brings his sublime physicality to two roles: the cruel yet
clownish “Tomainian” dictator and the kindly Jewish barber who is
mistaken for him. Featuring Jack Oakie and Paulette Goddard in
stellar supporting turns, The Great Dictator, boldly going after the
fascist leader before the U.S.’s official entry into World War II,
is an audacious amalgam of politics and slapstick that culminates in
Chaplin’s famously impassioned speech.

persuasive, and wrenching, Hearts and Minds is an overwhelming
emotional experience and the most important nonfiction film ever

COMMENTS: From the visionary mind of Academy Award winner Martin
McDonagh (Seven Psychopaths, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing,

OUR REVIEW
COMMENTS: Vinegar Syndrome's 4K UHD release of William Sachs’ The
Incredible Melting Man was commercially successful, despite heavily
negative reviews. Baker's makeup effects were generally praised with
the progressive melting of Steve West's body through radiation
poisoning. There are several "atomic age" homages in "The Incredible
Melting Man" to science fiction and horror films of the 1950s and
60's - a sub-genre that we love. It's even mentioned in Cult Science
Fiction Films: From the Amazing Colossal Man to Yog : The Monster
from Space written by Welch D. Everman. The title itself, The
Incredible Melting Man, refers to Jack Arnold's inventive The
Incredible Shrinking Man with Grant Williams battling a house
spider. One of the melting man's victims is played by
directed-of-note Jonathan Demme (The Silence of the Lambs.) Less
notable but of interest, The Incredible Melting Man also has
quasi-exploitation genre star Cheryl Smith (as Rainbeaux Smith), the
model who would get her breasts exposed by the aggressive
photographer. She would also star in Demme's Caged Heat and Melvin
and Howard, as well as other appearances in Farewell, My Lovely,
Phantom of the Paradise, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, Massacre at
Central High, Revenge of the Cheerleaders, Parasite etc. As a
gimmick, candles were made and sold to advertise the film. It was
Drive-In fodder with the exciting sci-fi horror title. It remains a
nostalgic, cheesy, fun ride with some very creepy visuals. Vinegar
Syndrome's 4K UHD is a large step-up in terms of video quality and
it adds new extras - certainly recommended to the right crowd.

COMMENTS: Demi Moore (Ghost) and Woody Harrelson (The People vs.

couple who are betting on a quick trip to Las Vegas to deal them a
lucky hand. But the odds are suddenly even more attractive when
billionaire John Gage (Robert Redford, Three Days of the Condor) ups
the ante—complete financial freedom. The price? One night of passion

quick and simple solution to their money problems creates more
friction than the couple bargained for as the high stakes of trust,
love and attraction come into play as part of Gage’s compelling
proposal. From Adrian Lyne, the acclaimed director of Flashdance, 9½
Weeks, Fatal Attraction, Jacob’s Ladder and Unfaithful, comes a film
that examines a riveting morality game—one in which each player has
a strategy, as well as a set of rules to play by. Featuring Seymour

Including the Oscar-winning rape-and-revenge drama The Virgin Spring

the landmark psychological drama Persona (1966), through these films

COMMENTS: Paramount's 4K UHD release of John Ford's "The Man Who
Shot Liberty Valance" will be pleasing enough for many. The iconic
western is largely told in an extensive flashback and the cast is a
'Who's Who' with Wayne, Stewart, wholesome Vera Miles, sadistic Lee
Marvin, alcoholic Edmond O'Brien, comical Andy Devine, opportunistic
John Carradine, loyal Woody Strode, Denver Pyle and henchmen
Strother Martin and Lee Van Cleef. It has the oft-used conflicts of
law and disorder that plagued the pioneering old west, minor
romance, a gun debate, and the victory of democracy over tyranny.
It's a masterpiece of the genre that always deserves repeat viewing.
Despite my reservations on the image and a few glaring omissions
(commentary track on the 4K disc and uncompressed mono) - it is the
best to-date for fans of this pure western gem. Still recommended,

COMMENTS: Jeff Kanew's Natural Enemies is a despondent skew of
'American Dream' values with an blunt annihilation of the
traditional family. It carries themes of sexual dissatisfaction,
inadequacy, nihilism and fatalism often evoking Peter Bogdonavich’s
Targets. Permeated with depression, via a unique window of mental
illness, Natural Enemies seem far ahead of its time and I agree with
Bill Ackerman that it is well deserved of rediscovery. Thanks to Fun
City Editions Blu-ray for probably my favorite release of theirs to
date. Not only a new unmasking of this fascinating film, but a
deeply analyzed commentary and supplements with significant
participation of the director. It couldn't be any more different

Wow. It certainly won't suit all tastes but is still very strongly

COMMENTS: Lewis Milestone's Rain was a flop in its day - critically
and financially - but has elevated its status significantly -
notably because of its Pre-Code charms. It was from W. Somerset

unbridled freedom and religious hypocrisy which may have been
shockingly judgmental for the 30's audiences. Rain is highly
interestingly shot with close-ups of the terrain and revealing body
language of the 'preacher and prostitute' discussing personal
philosophy's. Another film version of this story is 1953's, 3-D
offered, Miss Sadie Thompson with Rita Hayworth in the titular role.
Aside from the lossy audio black-mark, I am very happy to have seen
this via VCI's Blu-ray in the 4K-restoration - Rain remains a highly
fascinating critique of hypocrisy with appealing visual imagery. We
absolutely recommend!

COMMENTS: After You Have Suffered, He Will Find You Secluded in a
desolate forest, home to little more than the decaying remnants of
the past, a broken family is further torn apart by a mysterious
death. Adam (Gabriel Nicholson), guided by a pervasive sense of
dread, hunts for answers only to learn that they are not alone; an
insidious presence by the name of Sator has been observing his
family, subtly influencing all of them for years in an attempt to
claim them. Shot in the Santa Cruz mountains and drawing from his
grandmother's real life belief in a protective spirit that spoke to
her, Sator quietly unspools a story of isolation and dread that fits
firmly into the recent wave of unsettling arthouse horror. Cauldron
films is honored to release the world-wide Blu-ray debut of Sator,
the film Paste magazine named "The best horror film of 2021".

COMMENTS: Darius Marder's Sound of Metal deals with the subject of
hearing impairment and initially accepting it as permanent

drummer Ruben Stone to assist in re-establishing his life and values
he can now see as important. It morphs to a vital maturation while
accepting his condition without selfishness or his previous
nihilistic perceptions. It's quite brilliantly realized with
excellent acting, sound and cinematography. Riz Ahmed seems to get
more convincing with each performance. The Criterion Blu-ray has

COMMENTS: Well, the cat is out of the bag and someone should address
Paramount's lackluster products - recently their The Man Who Shot
Liberty Valence 4K UHD, reviewed HERE. The colors on this When
Worlds Collide Blu-ray are dull and brownish. This would be in
direct opposition to their description; "Both are essential
Technicolor masterpieces from the Golden Age of Hollywood,
delivering eye-popping visual effects". This 1080P leans heavily
brown and shows less information in the frame than the 2020 Imprint
of the same title. It also appears softer and possibly horizontally
stretched. Even the monochrome sequence is effected. Colors have far
less depth on the bare-bones single-layered transfer. It is
significantly inferior video "on the Blu-ray remastered from the
original film elements". A visitor the other day and I tried to
figure out what is going on. The original audio is lossless with a
three lossy DUB and subtitle options. The only extras on this disc
is trailer which has also lost any vibrancy. It appears as though
this visual weaknesses have permeated the War of the Worlds 4K UHD.
Not good, Paramount. Stick with the stacked Imprint Blu-ray for When
Worlds Collide.

It couldn't be any more different
from Kanew's successful Revenge of the Nerds made a few years later.
Wow. It certainly won't suit all tastes but is still very strongly
recommended by this reviewer.
