Directed by Rick Rosenthal
USA 1994
Ted and Mary have just moved, with their two young daughters, to the sleepy coastal town of Gull Island so that Ted can complete work on his thesis. Everything couldn’t seem more picturesque about their new, seaside home…that is, except for the increasing number of aggressively behaving birds. After surviving an unprovoked nighttime avian invasion, Ted becomes determined to figure out the cause of their unusual behavior; an investigation which leads him to uncover the sinister goings on in the nearby waters. All the while, the birds increase their now deadly attacks, moving up from family pets to human victims… One of the handful of direct-to-cable-television horror movies produced in the early to mid 90s by Universal, The Birds II: Land's End is a jaw dropping animal attack spectacle from director Rick Rosenthal (Halloween II) which stars Brad Johnson (Always), James Naughton (Cat’s Eye), Chelsea Field (Master of the Universe), and Tippi Hedren (The Birds). *** Still haunted by the memory of the son they lost to an accident years ago, Ted and Mary Hocken take up residence with their two young daughters on the remote, windswept reaches of a tiny East Coast island. The Hockens are determined to forget their painful past and spend a quiet, uneventful summer. But as immense flocks of birds begin massing around the island, it becomes clear that something is very wrong in this isolated, deceptively calm oasis. Before long, the sky is darkened by a hideous onslaught of the screeching, winged creatures. It's an assault unlike anything in the history of man or beast or is it? For one old timer recalls a similar, horrific outbreak that gripped the West Coast decades ago... |

On their
Blu-ray,
Vinegar Syndrome use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (24-bit) in the
original English language. The Birds II: Land's End
has avian attacks - squawking, screeching - boating sounds, fire and
rifle shots that come through with effective depth
in the lossless. The score was by Ron Ramin - who did mostly TV series
work and a few TV movies - sounding clean adding some atmosphere and
flavor to the action. Dialogue is consistent and the audio quality is
adeptly rendered. Vinegar Syndrome offer optional English (SDH)
subtitles on their Region 'A'-locked
Blu-ray.

Rick Rosenthal's The Birds II: Land's End
is a standalone sequel to Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 film
The Birds, that was set in Bodega Bay, California. The plot is
similar to the original and
Tippi Hedren has a minor role as a different character from the 63'
film. Director Rosenthal had himself credited by the pseudonym 'Alan
Smithee' - an indication he wanted to disown The Birds II. I seem
to recall it being out on LaserDisc back in the day. It's not as
'horrible' as reviews often describe, but, of course, it has little
cinematic value compared to the original - despite the name, Tippi and
the plot. I admit, I was still keen to see it as an animal attack
feature, regardless of the poor reputation. Some may be keen because of
Tippi's participation and its plot similarities although it lacks
'kitsch' or 'camp' desirability. Vinegar Syndrome do fabulous
