(aka "Skeleton of Mrs. Morales")

Directed by Rogelio A. González
Mexico 1960

The Skeleton of Mrs. Morales (Spanish: El Esqueleto de la señora Morales) is a 1960 Mexican black comedy film adapted from horror master Arthur Machen's 1927 story The Islington Mystery by screen writer Luis Alcoriza, a frequent collaborator of Luis Buñuel. It is regarded by critics as one of the hundred best Mexican films of all time. (This film is ranked #19 in the list of the 100 best films of Mexican cinema, in the opinion of 25 film critics and experts on Mexico, published by the magazine Somos in July 1994. It tells the tale of quiet taxidermist Pablo Morales (former matinee idol Arturo de Córdova) who suffers the demands of his prudish and hypochondriac wife Gloria (Amparo Rivelles) After twenty years of a hellish marriage, he decides to murder her. Over the top performances and an ironic, final twist make this film by Rogelio A. González a timeless satire of weepy melodramas.

ADDITION: VCI Blu-ray (March 2020): VCI have transferred another Mexican film to Blu-ray. The black comedy horror "Skeleton of Mrs. Morales" (El Esqueleto de la señora Morales) is advertised as a 'Major 4K Restoration". VCI are coming out with other Mexican Blu-rays, that look like similar digital production releases; Hasta El Viento Tiene Miedo (Even The Wind Is Afraid)  Luis Bunuel's El Bruto (also cited as a 4K Restoration) and the already reviewed Una familia de tantas aka "A Family Like Many Others" on Blu-ray. There are some inconsistencies with a few scenes looking markedly different (compromised density) than the rest of the 1080P presentation which is very impressive. The film has some very deliberate lighting and the contrast and detail offered by the 4K restoration are fabulous - make-up (massacre) and skin pores are exposed in close-ups. Many of these Mexican films on digital appear to have had some minor brightness boosting but it didn't effect the stellar HD presentation, imo. I uttered 'Wow' a few times in my viewing.

On their Blu-ray, VCI use a linear PCM mono track (16-bit) in the original Spanish language. It has a few sync issues but dialogue is clear. There is a score by Raúl Lavista (285 composure credits including Una familia de tantas aka "A Family Like Many Others" and Bunuels' The Exterminating Angel), usually sounding ominous without much of a lighter tone. I liked that it - it seemed to accentuate the 'black comedic' elements with a less-obvious expression. VCI offer optional yellow English subtitles (see sample below) on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The VCI Blu-ray has no extras which is particularly disagreeable if they want to encourage appreciation of Skeleton Of Mrs. Morales. I'd love to have heard some discussion on the production - it's a film worthy of supplements and/or a commentary. The disc presentation does start with trailers from Hasta El Viento Tiene Miedo (Even The Wind Is Afraid), Luis Bunuel's El Bruto (cited as a 4K Restoration), and Una familia de tantas aka "A Family Like Many Others".

"Skeleton of Mrs. Morales" was a surprisingly discovery. I enjoyed the, often, exaggerated. characterizations and the dominant use of bottom lit scenes with prominent 'spooky' shadows added a creepy atmospheric flavor. There are some impressive cinematographic angles utilized - through windows, top of stairs, at the bottom of the floor etc. I'm not always the most forgiving of VCI but I really liked this Blu-ray film and presentation. It loses marks for bare-bones status and is priced a bit high, presently.  Still, very much worth seeing and owning, imo.
