We are talking about a minimum of $0.10 - $0.15 a day, perhaps a quarter (or more) to those who won't miss it from their budget. It equates to buying DVDBeaver a coffee once, twice or a few times a month. You can then participate in our monthly Silent auctions, and have exclusive access to many 'bonus' High Resolution screen captures - both 4K UHD and Blu-ray (see HERE).

Directed by Bryan Forbes
UK 1964

Kim Stanley and Richard Attenborough give outstanding performances in this classy British thriller, with Attenborough winning a BAFTA for Best British Actor and Stanley scoring an Oscar nomination. Written and directed by Bryan Forbes who also won a Writers Guild award, an Edgar and a BAFTA nomination Séance on a Wet Afternoon is presented here as a brand-new High Definition remaster from original film elements in its original theatrical aspect ratio.

Myra Savage, a highly-strung spiritual medium, convinces her weak-willed husband to fake a child kidnapping so she can offer her services to the parents when all seems lost. Though horrified at the prospect, he reluctantly goes along with the plan but becomes more convinced than ever that Myra is losing her grip on reality.

***

So-called psychic Myra Savage has no patience for chintz and cheap tricks, for her power is real. Myra can see into other people’s minds, can even sometimes sense the future, but she has never yet communicated with the other side. For that she needs the cooperation of great psychics, but she lacks the stature to attract their attention. To satisfy this burning need for fame, she and her husband concoct The Plan. Bill snatches a six-year-old girl from her schoolyard and pastes together a letter demanding ransom. After a few days of citywide panic, Myra will lead the police to the girl and the money, and all of London will know her name. When a criminal can see the future, what could possibly go wrong?

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Network Blu-ray (February 2020): Network have transferred Bryan Forbes's Séance on a Wet Afternoon to Blu-ray. It is on a dual-layered disc with a supportive bitrate. The 1080P (24 fps) image looks impressive on my system with only some inconsequential warts when looking under the microscope with some brief waxiness. Overall the detail is quite strong in close-ups and the layered contrast help the visuals export depth. Essentially a major advancement over SD.

NOTE: We have added 66 more large resolution Blu-ray captures for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, Network use a linear PCM mono track (16-bit) in the original English language. It sounds consistent and clean with a mood-enhancing score by the great John Barry (The Lion in Winter, Deadfall, The Chase, Midnight Cowboy, Dances With Wolves and the Bond themes among his many credits)  that adds greatly to the presentation. You might also recognize Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy's Hear my Prayer sung by Ernest Lough. Network offer optional English subtitles (see sample below) on their Region 'B' Blu-ray.

The Network Blu-ray includes an audio commentary by director/screenwriter Bryan Forbes and, actress Nanette Newman. Forbes discusses 'Allied Film Makers' the short lived British production company formed in November 1959 by Basil Dearden, Michael Relph, Jack Hawkins, Richard Attenborough and Bryan Forbes. Séance was the last of six films made by the production company that included The League of Gentlemen (1960) and Man in the Moon (1960). Forbes discussed their lack of funds - how in Seance on a Wet Afternoon the bulk of the finances went to Kim Stanley where he and Attenborough maybe got $5,000. It's good - he appears honest and Nanette Newman is a nice foil being in the film herself - as they discuss making the film. There is also Memories on a Wet Afternoon a 1/2 hour + interview with Bryan Forbes in SD about the film on other levels from the commentary. The supplements include a theatrical trailer, image gallery with stills and poster and a booklet by Simon Ward. There are PDFs in the root of the disc with a script and Danish programme.

Seance on a Wet Afternoon is wonderfully crafted by Bryan Forbes. Gerry Turpin's black and white cinematography adds some unique touches. The film grips you and only builds over the course of the two-hour running time. It's quite brilliant and an oversight to have waited this long to get it on Blu-ray. It, thankfully includes a commentary and is strongly recommended!
